    Sorry, but wrong.

It was cut from 10kph to 5kph 'in a school area'

    The national 10kph still applies.

Did you even read the article Weasel? And on what basis do you believe that the national 10km/h over the limit "grace" still applies? Just as an aside, I happen to believe the 10km/h grace still applies too, but I have nothing to back that up, so I'd be interested to hear what you're basing your statement on.

"Starting next Wednesday, the police will enforce a 4km/h tolerance within 250m of school and preschool boundaries - a further reduction following last year's slashing of the 10km/h tolerance to 5km/h"

That's the part that would lead ME to believe the status quo remains nationally...

But then, I *AM* a bit sober at the moment, so may not comprehend the article fully...

There's nothing in that article stating a reduction in the national tolerance.

Precisely, it's all in the wording, there is nothing in there saying national, so it's still referring to the schoolzone lowering. The general idea as far as I'm aware is that speedos can read out anything in the region of +/- 10%, this has always been taken to mean 10kph, but for all intents and purposes the police could quite happily say that in a 50kph zone, if you speedo is reading 60kph then your car/bike should have failed it's WOF for over-reading it's speed by 20%. Therefore when they set the limit to 4kph tolerance in a 40kph zone, that's still giving you the 10% that your speedo may be out by.

Follow this logically, and if they only gave you 5kph in a 100kph zone, that's only 5%, and it'd be far too easy for a speedo to be out by at least that amount without a driver realising.

I just realized, I'm a total doofus. Good one, Deviant. I think it's me who wasn't reading it properly. Apologies Donor & Weasel! I think I'll go edit my other post now. I wasn't thinking about the fact that the whole thing was to do with the speed tolerance around schools. Fool. So the national tolerance when you're not around a school, I think it can safely be stated, is still 10km/h.

    Sorry.

How the fuck can they make it less than 10kph??

Vehicle manufactures have a 10% +/- tolerance in thier speedo!!

That means Mr joe blog might be doing 102 on his speedo, yet that'll be 112, and he'll get nabbed!!

But i definatly agree with the school area. I've seen some scary shit happen around schools with dipshits driving too fast/not looking.

I think (prepares to be flamed here) that school zones should be signposted as such and the speed limit within those zones should be 30 kph.

Perhaps, personally my belief is that schools wouldn't be a problem if all these tards in remuera tractors didn't drive their single kid the 500 metres to school.

Perhaps a school bus system similar to the yellow buses you see in the states would be better? The only trouble with lowering the limit is that there are no kids around other than 8:30 - 9:00 and 15:00-16:00 ish, but the limit would still apply.

Ummm, isn't the fine for 0-10km over the limit $30...not $80?

I am with you yunga on the speed limit around schools being posted. That would save a lot of problems. At the school I work in, our patrols are on state highway 2 and it's amazing the amount of cars who race through doing more than 50.
