I'm just as guilty as anybody else on here for the following:
Many of us overtake in places whre most cagers wouldn't even consider it.
When on a powerful machine as narrow and as quick as motorcycle of any decent engine size, overtaking manoeuvres can be accomplished very quicky and on short straights that other vehicles could never match.
I've seen bikers overtaking in areas where even I wouldn't consider it and yet many of us overtake in places we think are safe. Yes, there is clear visibility between a set of corners and a short straight is all it takes. BUT, we often judge our overtake based on the speed of the traffic around us or the speed of cars that we expect to be coming the other way at similar speeds to the cars we are overtaking.
Warning: when you overtake on a real short stretch of road or between corners with what appears to be enough room, then consider that if you are doing this on your bike, who is to say that someone else is doing exactly the same coming the other way on their bike? If that's the case, you really cannot complete that overtake in all safety.
So, whenever you are about to complete a speedy, short distance overtake, do so in the belief that a motorcyclist is coming the opposite way at the speeds that you will hit during the overtake and I believe there will definitely be times that you will know an overtake cannot be completed without endangering yourself or others.
Just a thought but one worth considering I think.
