I don't mind group rides if I know and trust the people I'm riding with. On that basis, if I was organising one it would be by invitation only, rather than a more general thing. Unfortunately some participants don't seem to know the difference between a group ride and a track day. Which could explain a worrying safety record.

Ummmm, what about the people who do know the difference between "track day" and "group" riding yet still upset the saftey records?

The northland rides seem to be popular, so why no local ones?
Even on the odd occasion I've posted a ride up, hardley anyone comes now....

I'd rather do my own thing

I thought there'd be a flurry of group rides being organised now, as that jerk JSG isn't going to be present on any of them.

I don't understand the Poll ... most of why I am here is because of all the Group Rides. All we seem to do at the moment is go riding in groups.

Perhaps it is an Auckland problem?

i dont like the constent stopping for this and that gas and a pie for lunch is good. smoke stops and cafes take up good riding time keep the grove going.

And rightly or wrongly, my perception is that KB rides , no matter how good trhe intention is at the start, turn into races. Yeah , I know, ride at your own pace blah blah. But I'm no more resistant to the "must keep up" syndrome than anyone else.

Apart from not wanting to end up in a ditch, mangled, my licence is important to me. I don't minding risking a fine and some points. But I don't want to be walking, so time over 140kph has to be very carefully considered. And it seems (maybe wrongly, but that;s trhe perception) that KB rides never dip UNDER 140. Realistically, I think I have enough self control not to end in the ditch. But when the pace is sitting on the ton for the slow riders, it's jolly hard not to ease the throttle open that bit more :" Everyone's going this fast or faster - we can't all get pinged". Um, yeah.

I've noticed that other areas seem to have more in the way of "social rides at a cruisey/ decent (not exactly law abiding) but not licence losing speed". Auckland doesn't.Which is a pity. However, it's not something that worries me.
You're right. You've never been on any of the usual KB group rides.

This is what they're really like:

I've been attending KB rides for about 2 years - been on almost all of them that have been publicly organised in Auckland over the weekends.

But I've never, ever seen or been subjected to ridicule for being a slow rider, right from my days with a L-plate arriving 20mins plus after the rest of the group.

Hell - people like Loosebruce, Two Smoker, Motoracer, Death, Zed, Aff-man, etc, would be waiting, parked on the side of the road with no helmets on and big welcoming smiles on their faces.

What is this chest beating - pressure to keep up - peepee envy that people are talking about??

Another example are the original thursday night rides.

There have been reported incidents of the 250+ speeds done on them - but then how come the most regular riders of these rides QKCHK and QKKID have never got a ticket???

Now because of their size they're social events - but they started out as some pretty full on sessions.

If I was on that ride... then you would all be waiting on me... and if you complained then I would tell yah to bugger, and you hassled me about then eh who cares, if its in fun... being riddiculed is different and if it was my mate and I he would have pulled half a dozen times for a smoke before the planned stop...

All comes down to self control, if you want to turn it into race or not... its that simple

Pretty much - the guys in front race each other, the guys at the back cruise.

It it's posted as a meeting for faster riders - don't go if you ain't one - kinda like you tend to stay out of female toilets if you ain't female....

And the guy just behind the guys racing in front has a nice brisk ride without any hassles.......
