Oddly crashe, it's actually easier to carry drum gear in a vehicle with seats. Despite what people think, the drums themselves are quite fragile, and the last thing you want it a 40kg case full of stands careening into a bass drum during a hard stop.
With the seats in place you can use seatbelts and tie downs to stop everything moving about, and the seat cushions stop the drums from getting damaged in transit. I've had a wooden snare drum demolished by Air NZ. It was in an SKB hard case, and the case wasn't all that damaged, but the drum inside was smashed beyond belief. It had been dropped 40ft out of a storage unit.
