You inspired me to get out on the peddles Nordie. I spent some time on my daughters old treadly on the weekend, doing skids, riding down steps, popping some lifties, really cool fun and a good workout.....roast chicken and chops afterwards with roast vegies, apple and rubarb pie with lashings of whipped cream for puddy...magic:cool:

Changed the DR rear tyre, moved the MTB front to the rear and mounted up a new front and mounted knobblies on the 'crosser today.
Then went for a loop over Codgers, Tantragee, Golf Course and home on the MTB.
It was spitting at the start of Codgers and I could see the crap coming in from the south.
2 pronged attack. The bastard also sneaked in from the east.
45mins of an hours ride in pissing, cold, windy, rain :nya:
Sun was out when I got home :eek5:
The MTB isn't shifting properly, the shifter is slipping. I don't think it's the back end that's the problem.
I still prefer the 'crosser. Unless it's rocky...

Been looking for an ANT+ compatible bike computer that can use the same sensors my phone does - heart, cadence, speed...
Not many out there...
By accident I found my Garmin Oregon 300 GPS does
Works sweetly with the HRM and cadence sensors...
The bonus of the GPS is the batteries last a hell of a lot longer than the phone ones and when I upload the gpx file to the SportyPal site, it picks up the hrm data as well

Butter chicken is serious recovery food
The MTB wasn't shifting properly yesterday. Looks like the chain is poked. Put a better old one on and it's still not shifting properly.
I think there's slop in the shifter. The rear mech is almost new (4 years old)...
The 'crosser shifts by thought compared.

Whats the cassette look like & chain ring? If you had an better 'old' chain wouldn't that be buggered too? noone takes off a good chain & leaves it lying around... Shifters are a curse when they age.

Cassette and chain rings seem fine. The old chain was very stretched. The newer SRAM one is the same number of links and doesn't pull off the chain ring and show teeth...
The shifter goes either up or down through the box fine. Just not both...
Riding yesterday and it was jumping about a bit and the shifter was getting some slack occasionally, like it was slipping internally...
You can't feel positive detents when shifting to the bigger cassette rings.
NordieBoy
25th October 2012, 14:13
Hmmm...
I think the shifter is the culprit.
If I set it up to go up the box properly, from 9th to 1st, then it works perfectly.
But...
Then you click t'other way to go back down and there's no cable movement. No shifting until the second click down.
Does this when set to go down the box properly too, won't shift up until the 2nd click...

NordieBro came around and had a look at the TT.
Good thing too, as he had some "issues" with it himself
The guides were slightly cracked on the sides and one was fine on the surface.
The other was quite cracked and worn.
The back one had quite an indentation (about 4mm) where the tensioner arm pushed into it :eek5:
The chain looked fine so we thought the previous owner may have replaced the cam chain but re-used the tensioners.
But we looped the chain over a screwdriver and put the new one beside it.
The old one was 4mm longer than the new one.
That's 4mm in a loop, so 8mm longer overall :pinch:
If the chain was replaced, it's got bad in 16,000km.
I don't think it's been replaced...
A handful of lock washers, gaskets and o-rings to order and it should be back on the (off)road...

A bit of practice today for replacing the DR headset bearings.
I put a cheapy sealed cartridge unit in the pushie. Sooooo nice to have smooth, non-sticky steering :2thumbsup

Went for my "usual" ride on the treadlie and either the rocks are smaller and smoother, or the new head set makes tracking between them much smoother.
It's going to be a huge difference on the DR when I do those ones...

Took the crosser out to check out the tracks being used for tomorrows mtb race up Codgers.
Had a look around Pippilini, Fireball, Firball, Drain, Pig, Tusk, Leash and other probably porcine related tracks.
Got lost, came upon some unicyclists. Twice. From different directions. Did I mention getting lost?
Fine to ride on the crosser for fun, but not at race pace
Good thing I don't have a race pace isn't it :Punk:

Is that the firball by the IV line or the one right up the top by the trig? Both are great. I used to do the Turners (East side of Fireball saddle) struggle back up fireball road & up to the trig then do Furball & P51. I now do up jackstrack (phew) from the end of the pipeline to fireball saddle then down the new furball. & again!
The new furball by the IV has some bloody steep dropoffs over the side.

Well, the TT still works.
Took it up town for a WoF and found the WoFfer is only working mornings this week
The clutch feels weird, the throttle is a bit heavy and both wheels are wobbly.
Nothing changed there then :headbang:
madmartin
15th January 2013, 17:09
maybe the wobbly wheels have something to do with the "keep left" sign that's acting as a skid plate, perhaps they're always trying to turn left?
NordieBoy
15th January 2013, 17:31
Interesting...
The MT43 rear tyre is the same rolling diameter as a 21" knobbly at around 680-690mm dia. A normal 18" knobbly is about 650mm.
That changes the gearing considerably (= 1 tooth on the front) and raises the back/steepens the steering up noticeably...
No wonder it feels tall with MT43's front and rear...
NordieBoy
18th January 2013, 20:34
Only reason I can think of for the height of the MT43's is that on heavier bikes, 8-10psi would squish a "normal" height tyre too close to the rim, too easily.
Nicked a spoke from NordieBro's spare knackered front wheel today. Well, I nicked 2 and had to de-nipple 6 to get the buggers out <_<
Bent the spoke into a 1/4 circle, put it in position and straightened it out. As good as (almost) new :third:
There's a nice flat spot in this rim and some wobbles but nothing too drastic.

Just replaced the chain and sprockets on the mighty DR.
112 links of EK 520SRO o-ring chain and a DR750 front 15t and RGV250 rear 46t JT sprockets.
That was the easiest I've ever had a joiner link go on...
The rear sprocket is black, to go with the new tank :Punk:

Nicked some suspension bearings from NordieBro's parts bike and used the best bits to rebuild mine today.
Still sloppy :(
Main slop seems to be in either the bushings or needles in the dogbone.
The dogbone centres are only at about 50mm, so any slop multiplies out significantly at the wheel.

I turn it off every time I stop.
The float needle I noticed after filling the bike up, as it was dripping out the overflow every 10s or so. Which was weird as I thought I'd turned the tap off. Oops, I had...
All I know is it worked when we were swapping the tanks over, 'cause I remember the fuel line coming off my old one when we were transferring fuel and I got covered

do these come with some sort of mounting system for handle bars?
Not really.
There's a strap you can put around your arm though.
I made mine...
Double sided velcro.
Survives the gorse OK.
I strap it to the GPS RAM mount usually although if there was room, I'd prefer it on the throttle side as I'm usually holding the clutch in with the left hand.
Before cool sections, I'll stop, turn the remote on and have a drink whilst waiting for the GoPro to turn on (can be up to 30s) and then turn it off after the section.
Using pause, only when in a series of shorter sections I want recorded.
Night Falcon
11th April 2013, 18:11
thanks for that. looking at your pics I think I can make up a mount to fix it on the bars ok. I need to get a chest mount as well for trials riding as the helmet cam it too high to get the front of the bike in the shot, which makes the footage a tad boring...although the best shots are still the ones where you get the whole bike in....much more interesting to watch when things go pear shaped :devil2:

well not really a shortcut kind of sarcasm really - the bit where it turns you back up the road from Smiths ford to the dam to climb up thru AJs property to the pipeline & down again. - could have done without that extra climb:sweatdrop.
i agree with Sharlands hill & Firball. For my short rides I ride up Jacks track (from the pipeline junction) to Fireball saddle & down the first bit of Firball which is supposed to be the uphill section. The track is so smooth & flowing I love it.
My long ride is up to the Firball Trig down the other side & up P51 to do ........... & then viral motion.
Would it be appropriate to start up an adv mountain biking thread here? Doesn't seem to be any other NZ forums operating that I have seen worthwhile. kinda ties in with motoing on the fitness side but don't want to rock the boat.

We've got two sets each, which would almost squeeze under the $100 mark, otherwise you'd probably get away with only using one.

Bugger off - Charlie did absolutely bloody amazingly well in the Dakar. You look at how many professional riders/ drivers DNF or die during the Dakar. He made it to day 5 - an excellent effort considering he hadn't done any real competitive racing & was pretty honest about his lack of abilities & confidence.

Right...
Just been playing in Hira over the weekend comparing knobblies and trials tyres in various types of terrain.
Did a loop on Sunday with cheap knobs on and again today with Pirelli MT43's front and rear.
I'll run through the terrain types as they appeared in the ride (vid to come)...
Hardpack dry(ish) clay - no excess wheelspin from the trials tyres.
Hardpack wet rocks - knobs spun up, slid sideways and were generally all over the place.
Wet pine needles/mud/roots - knobs didn't like the roots...
Loose rocks - trials tyres were nice and stable, tracked true, knobs were very skittish.
Steep loose downhills - trials don't dig in under brakes as well.
The trials tyres just gave so much more confidence and comfort. Much more paddling and sitting with knobs on.
Up the steep, long climb out of the Gun Club Valley to Isolation, my heart rate got up to 165bpm with knobs and 135bpm with the trials tyres...

I do like the LED's.
Thinking of replacing the headlight with an alloy blanking plate with 4 of them mounted in it.

Yep. Going to run tubeless for this set of tyres (Mich Wild Race'R) and then go back to cheap tyres (Maxxis Ranchero and Larsen TT) and tubes for the convenience...
Unless I'm completely hooked on tubeless by then :innocent:
Be interesting to see what the difference is after a few months of running tubeless to stick tubes in and compare...
I'd hazard a guess that the answer for me would be "bugger all" as I don't ride fast...

Also weighed the mtb .
With the old tubeless hutchy python's on the Roval wheels, it's down to 12.5kg. That's 1.5kg lost just in the wheels/tyres.
On my short test loop, it was REALLY noticeable.
At the moment, I'd trust my old wheels with tubes in the rocky hills more, but that's because they're easy to change tubes on.

I have Shimano XT tubless wheels on my Stumpy, swapped the Kenda's which came with the bike, they were crap, no grip whatsoever, I spoke to a downhill rider about them, he laughed and told me they call them "Kenda Surprise" for obvious reasons! Put a pair of Specialised "The Captain Control" on, brilliant tyres for grip and wear, but they do puncture! I tried a repair on one after getting a fine 4mm slit puncture, the sealant would not sort it, so went down to the local bike repair shop, they advised super glue? Did not feel that confident with their solution, so put a patch on the inside, it lasted for about a week, ended up putting some motorbike "Slime" in, sorted, does not go down once a week like it and the other tyre used to, (this is normal bye the way according to the bike shop)?

Now trying a pair of Salsa low rise bars in the same width but with 6° rise and 10° pullback. This also brings them within 40mm of the seat height.
I do like the 10° pullback. Not so sure about the extra height though, may have to flip the stem and retest...

<img width=640 src=http://sports.nelson.geek.nz/motorsport/mybikes/xl250/slides/20040627-dscf0397.jpg>
My new bike.
This was the first time I'd seen it.
I've never ridden in mud before.
Very muddy, slippery, raining, slippery, clay, slippery surface.
Preperation
The clutch action was a little - missing - so we found a spare and bolted it on.
Ditto for the throttle grip.
Pulled the rear pegs off, tensioned the chain and I was away.
Acceleration
Nope, not really.
Straight line stability
Nope, nada, none.
Not on this surface.
Not with a 90% worn 23" front on there.
It changed direction more often than a political party with the staggers.
And this was on the straight.
Cornering
Slowly, eventually yes it did.
Brown pants moments by the bucket, luckily there was too much mud for others to notice.
Suspension
In theory yes.
It does have these thingy's that go up and down but I would hesitate to call the overall effect "suspension".
Knee down?
Not me but my brother got his knee down.
Closely followed by his head, feet, head, feet and head.
We could hear him laughing from a hundred meters away.
Maintainence needed
Kickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickki ckkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkick kickkickkickkick - change sparkplug - drain carb - kickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickkickki ckkickkickkick VROOOOMMMM!
Well maybe more like vromm.
Cons
Everything?
Pros
It was cheap.
I can race it in classic mx.
After I've bought all of TradeMe's xl/xr parts.
It was cheap.
Summary
This is going to be fun.
My jaw hurt from all the smiling and giggling not to mention my arms/shoulders/back/legs.
Can't wait to ride it again.
:2thumbsup

I've always wondered about 3 phase power. I know it's for machines & stuff but is it like it starts with low voltage then gets a bit more then gets lots more to finish the job? Can you hear when it changes phases?

Thought you are an electrician?
That three phase motors are a lot smaller than an equivalent HP single phase is just one advantage. But they start on three phase and stay on three phase, there's no changing.

Nice job Fran, did you fit the after market disc brakes? Were they easy to fit?
They're shimano cable discs I got off TradeMe over 10 years ago.
Was even difficult getting pads for them back then.
Took about 20min to fit including finding cable inners and outers.
I'm thinking of stripping the full suspension bike and selling the bits.
It's a 100mm travel race bike and would only get used 2-3 times a season.
It's just a plush back end version of my stumpy hard tail which I really enjoy riding and is only used for the races I know are really rough.
NordieBoy
28th July 2014, 08:42
1x10 is good, but you have to add a 40/42t rear sprocket to regain any of the grinding type climbing ability.
A 32t front with 11-36 rear is lacking in the bottom end.
Actually, now I think about it, rides I know I'll need a granny gear on are the main reason for choosing the fully over the hard tail.
The closest to a fat bike I can do is a Diamondback Ascent rigid with 26x2.4" tyres.
11-34 rear gearing and a 42t front.
Should climb anything!

Did you have to weld brackets onto your forks and rear stays? I have often thought about fitting them to my old Cannondale, it would probably be far cheaper to buy an old disc brake MTB instead, not sure what the knock on effects would be regarding strength in the fork and frame...

Have no issues with the Candie's, Eggbeater's and Mallet's but Shimano is much cheaper and look to be stronger axles, which is what I'm after.
Hoping my knees can accept less float than they're accustomed to...
Although, the XTR axle does seem quite similar at the base, but I think it doesn't taper to a point like the Bro's ones.
For pure XC or cyclocross racing, I still don't think you can beat a pair of Eggbeater's.

Put some ugly black flat bars (original Kona ones) on the Unit to test with bar ends.
The bars are my preferred width, but too much pull back and not red enough.
The bar ends make ALL the difference. Can move around more easily to keep traction AND it's easier to climb.

I put some on my bike last year, can't tell the difference between them and the plain Jane discs I had one but wank factor increased quite a bit

Shouldn't have as much of the freshly cooked brake disc smell with them.

Any downhill and my brakes are always cooking, normally while I'm screaming in terror

The Avid BB7 brakes are not up to scratch compared with even my dodgy Elixir R's. It could be the pads, but there's plenty of meat there. The rear especially seems to grab more as it warms up which means letting off the lever slowly to keep nice constant braking.
Might nick the Shimano cheapies off the Stumpy and give them another go.
One bonus of cable brakes it's they're easy to get the cable length right. No buggering about with hose cutters, roses and re-bleeding.

Bits from Ireland have arrived!
Mostly.
The Funn Flame On bars and WTB tubeless rim tape are here, but the Manitou Marvel forks are stuck in customs and they don't phone or email, they post a letter...
GST, handling fee, GST on handling fee, biosecurity levy, GST on biosecurity levy = $120 extra. GST was only $75 of that.
32 hours from Belfast to Auckland, then 7 more days to get from Auckland to Nelson.
Coppermine Epic next Saturday, hope they're here before that! Don't want to do Boulder Valley on a rigid again if I can help it!
