Don't be lazy, two rim locks are the only way to go, front and back then no worries with wheel balance.
Got one on the front and one on the back.

Before today the Works Performance rear shocks were much nicer than the front stock forks.
Today the stock front forks with YSS PD Valves (emulators) are improved so much the rear now feels crap compared :D
The front brakes are total crap and have a new cable and shoes but the cable has no teflon liner...
Played around with rear shock air pressure from 90psi to 200psi and settled on 180psi which was plush(ish) over the stones but still resisted bottoming over the whoops.
The springs are far too heavy though and kick the back up in the whoops.
Still is a lot better than before

Did you expect any different. What about the front wheel airtime log?
Too many whoops on the track for long wheelies.
Speaking of which can DRs be held in long wheelies? - standard ones that is...
They can be but not sure how good it is oil-wise...
The Intiminators really worked well out there. The rear needs a gold valve as it's got good low speed damping but too much high speed damping. Or something.
It was fun to do a few laps on the DR after the XR :D

I like this track.
No big jumps that could be attempted on inappropriate bikes...

Pretty much.
It's more of a testing/practice track.
I should have got some side-on footage of the XR through the whoops at different speeds to see how the suspension was going :D
NordieBoy
21st September 2009, 20:22
Looking at the XR footage the back hasn't got enough sag (rear can't drop into holes) and the spring rate is to high (kicking up).
The damping is pretty good though.
Problem is I have no idea what the current spring rate is.
Anyone got a spring dyno in Nelson?

The damping is pretty good though.KTM PDS often has the same problem, described as insufficient high-speed rebound damping.
If you think the damping is okay, you're probably observing the low-speed damping... maybe?

The springs are overpowering the damping so lighter springs/same damping would be closer to good.
Maybe...

oh wise one I have a question
Does a DR 250 have an 18 inch rim?
I have spotted whats left of a DR in a shed and both rims look good, the forks are there to,but the frame looks like theres only enough room in it for a small motor so I'm thinking it may be a 250.
If the rims are the same as jatz 750 then I will grab them if I can.

Yes, the DR250's have a 18" rear wheel. Well, since 1987 anyway. Still 18" rim on the new DR-Z's too.
Check the width though, the 750 has most likely got a wider rim.

The second set of wheels came from a 1991 DR350 - they were virtually identical.

These are my bashplate generations from the mighty 50K sign to the Suzi one to the GP Custom...
The GP Custom needed a little... customizing to fit with the centre stand :D
Things to tweak now are...
File a bit off as it's a leeetle close to the oil filter.
Strip of HD tube between the front mount and the plate.
Shorten the front c/s bolts as they just touch the engine case.
Strips of foam rubber between the plate and the frame rails.
Got some other ideas too...
Be interesting to see if there's any audible difference. I'm expecting a bit of resonance before I get some foam strips in there.
Got some sealsavers today too.
Tomorrow I'll pull the forks and see how they look...

Why the foam rubber?? Noise reduction??

I've just pretended to go over a big log and although it got hung up on the footpeg mounts and ripped quite a bit of bark off it went well with no undue noise.
Shit. I could work for MCN with these reviews.

just woundering why you thought it would make noise??
Would have been interesting to see if it did or not.
On the drz400 the whole plate touchs on the frame. I use to make my self a new plate every now and then and there was only one time that it was a little noise there but i just tightend the bolts a little more and it went away.
:spanking:Anyway i will trim the right hand wing a little for more clearance for the filter and shorten the bolts :headbang:

Some people reckon the engine noise gets reflected back off bashplates up at the rider making them sound noisier.
Can't say I ever noticed a difference myself although I have been known to stick a bit of rubber in between plate and frame to kind of protect the frame a bit from scratches or gouges from the plate. Probably kidding myself but seemed like a good idea at the time.

Some bashplates reflect the noise/resonate something chronic.
CooneyR had a Suzi one on and it sounded like the gearbox was filled with 3in1 oil. You could hear everything.
My Suzi one was fine but it did have some rubber strips along the frame rails.
I like to isolate any metal on metal contact.
My 50K plate was silent until I bolted it up to the rear bolt holes you used and then it was loud...
I'd be tempted to use some 2-3mm tube on the rear mounts as well but it's working fine as it is :woohoo:
Cased on a couple of logs/rocks/dirt humps today and the bashplate sailed through no issues at all.
My footpeg mounts are 25mm lower than the bashplate however and gouged out quite a bit of terrain :D
I did however hear several good sized rocks ping off the plate so it's doing the job too.

I was interested in your observations about bash plates and noise, I've noticed some weird resonances from the Strom since fitting my beefy B & B plate and wondered if it was just new (to me...) bike paranoia. Stroms DO have a rep for a vibe around 6K revs which is 'amplified' by Givi crash bars (I think mine are Givis - can't find any ID on them, but they look like the pics). Adding the 'plate just enhances the whole mechanical symphony... as they say - if you use protection the sensation will be different
Have done a few kms over the school hols - to Nelson and back via backroads (in the rain!) and a joyful blast down the coast to Greymouth and back today. It's a comfort having wise thoughtful riders like Nordie to explain some of the 'symphony' is probably not sign of imminent metallic death! Cheers for the ideas, keep 'em coming.

The OEM bashplate on the 640A is aluminium, bolted solidly to the front frame down tube and to mounts under the engine. There are 4 rubber 'bumpers' between the plate and the frame rails.
I haven't noticed the plate itself vibrating or resonating, but it definitely reflects engine noise. And is sand-blasted from detritus thrown by the front wheel.

I was all ready to try a set of Shinko 705's and my damn brother says "I've got an almost new 130x80x17 Avon Gripster you can have".
The E-07 rear is almost flush with the centre strip at 11,000km so still has a couple of thou left in it.
Been sitting in the shed for a few years and it's a tubeless carcass but mounted up well and when I finally got the bead seated it looked OK.
Quick ride up Sharlands last night and it seems to go fine on the gravel if a bit more slippery leaned over than the E-07.
Fine in the hills and rough stuff except for wet rock climbs where it didn't have much traction at all but it hadn't got any real temperature into it yet.
It gets worse.
He's got a matching front hidden away somewhere too :(
Once it's had a few heat cycles through it it may soften up a bit.

I would expect they are hard all the way through, ie not just the top layer that could be 'burned' off or warmed up. I've got an IRC TR8 front that is a similar age, it's quite tough. The TR8 was unused when I got my grubby mitts on it. A tyre that's been used will likely be worse due to the vagaries of heat cycling the rubber.

Looks like it wasn't originally his tyre.
Was on a bike he fixed up for someone and he put a knobblie on and pulled this one off.
Seems to grip OK.
Impressed with the sidewall. Nice and soft. Over some tarseal judders that would normally see the rear skip slightly at 28psi the Avon rolled through them.
Wouldn't buy one new though... >$200 :gob:

Was on a Suzi 50 chasing my little nephew on his 80cc quad around the kids track and was getting both knees down in the corners :D
Then I went out on the DR for a lap or 2 and passed the fast little shit down the straight and was going to brake slide into the corner...
Avon Gripsters slide really well on green grass...
When you're sideways they don't slow down at all...
Nice little lowside. Some people saw it and laughed but as there were no cameras around (apart from the ones I was carrying) it's only an unofficial off...
Picked the grass out of the shifter and footpeg and was off again.

I don't think any other 70/30 tyre would do any different on green grass :D
I love the softness of the sidewall. 25psi and it handles the bumps better than MT21's at 18.
Grip on the seal is fine. A little slipping accelerating leaned over on painted lines as per normal and fine on gravel.
Not bad for a 13 year old tyre.
I think it'll stay on 'till shot but I won't get another...

Also noticed an oil leak at the head today.
The DR was parked at the EnduroCrossslightly nose down and there were a couple of drips from the left side of the head dowm onto the bashplate.
Head-bolts/gasket is the primary suspect.

Stock is 40mm but a huge butterfly+shaft in the way.
All the instructions for setting up pumpers on the DR are for either the Mikuni TM40 or Keihin FCR39.
The 38mm I would have had to work out all the jetting myself and the pilot and pilot air were fixed which didn't help.

The throttle is very heavy on the mighty DR and has a several second return time
When road riding I have to use the throttle rocker as otherwise I have to hold on so tightly it hurts.
Off road you don't notice it so much as you're not at constant throttle as long.
Took the throttle cables off the spare DR and cleaned them up.
Removed the sucky ones and both were sticky but the return cable was very bound up with gunk.
Put the new(ish) ones on and it wasn't much better

I made a number plate light for the KLR after relocating the plate - white LEDs from Dick Smith Electronics, they have an integral current limiting resistor so connect directly to 12v, a few dollars for a pack of 6. Mounted in holes drilled in a strip cut from a plastic chopping board.
This is mounted under the luggage rack. Nice and bright, no WOF problems so far. Would weigh all of 2 ounces, if that.

90/90/21 (TL) front ($104).

I put 28 psi in the front and 30 in the rear and headed up the Maitai.
Initial impression on the seal is of a fairly neutral ride.
Initial impression on hardpack gravel is of a fairly neutral ride.
Initial impression on loose grit/gravel is of a fairly neutral ride.
The front inspires confidence even in the loose corner grit.
The rear seems to have more traction leaned over than the SR244.
Next test is to take them back up there with 20f/22r psi and see the difference over the corrugations and in the corners.

The good thing about the 705's is the sidewall pressure is actually more than I'd normally run.
The 120 should be a little more sensitive to pressure than the 130 or 150 as well.
I'd hope to get 10-12,000 out of them.
I've also got to get some more wd-40. I used crc on the bead of these and didn't have the same "drying to stickyness" you get with wd-40.
I'll do an oil and filter change this weekend and may pop the cam cover off and re-seal.

Valve clearances checked, spark plugs cleaned, air filter done...
1 tight inlet and 1 tight exhaust but still within spec.
Replaced valve inspection caps with spares and good o-rings as the old o-rings were very old and not so good at the "stop the oil from going past" bit...
Cleaned up the spark plugs with the wire wheel and put them back in (3 years old now).
The leak on the head is from the cam cover just above the spark plugs. I've smeared a bit of gasket maker along the join to see if that helps in the meantime.

A little help guys! I can't get a new air filter for my XL250 in NZ (it's an L shape as the battery sits over the top of the air box) so have had to buy some No-Toil foam filter material. Going to cut out the paper from the plastic frame and fit it but not to sure what glue to use. Ive got a glue gun and hot glue, some silicon sealant or some black silastic gasket silicon. What would you guys recommend? Also how do you go about oiling it? I don't know how it's going to affect the performance as someone has already put a homemade exhaust can on it as well. How can you tell if it's too lean or rich? spark plug? I am venturing into new territory here.

Rubber cement (tixotrope) should be the stuff but No-Toil should have a recommended glue.

I also did the outside of the stator cover bung but found it was leaking from inside the hex hole for the allen key!
As it's so rounded off it's useless, I filled the hole with goop too.

Installed a new GPS and mount today.
It's a Garmin Nuvi 500 and RAM mount.
My little Quest has stopped transferring tracks back to the computer and it was easier to buy a new GPS than just delete the tracks on it :D
Bigger screen, better geocache support and I can position it a little higher/further forward and easily change the angle/position compared to my bodged Quest mount.
I've set it so I can still see the speedo/tacho.
Buuuut the Quest has far more features and is more customisable as you can't even do the normal editing of fields that are displayed on the Nuvi :(

The manual says keep below 4,000rpm for the first 800km, 6,000rpm until 1,500km and 10,000rpm from then after.
It's only done 800km since 1981.
Possibly a bit of dirt and some burnouts when it was stolen though.

I may have to use the DR front end after all.
Just measured up and the DR swingarm is 5mm wider and 100mm longer than the GSX one.
Mmmmmmm....
DR brakes instead of twin single pot fronts and drum rear....

Mounted up the 650 front end to the 400 today.
It works better brakes and height wise but the steering stem will need replacing with something that suits the bearings for the 400.
Also makes it look more old school and the skinnier uppers mean more turning before hitting the tank..
Photos to come.

Just a thought.......... but could you not swap the stem over ?
I know a couple of guys on the BIG forum have put new/machined up 750/800 stems into ktm/wr or wp front forks

Was thinking of that but will ask Shane which route would be easier.
If I actually had a GSX stem to play with it'd be easier.
The DR stem could possibly be made to fit with a bit of work too but it may be easier to make up a new stem to suit the ID and length of the GSX bearings.

Googl KLR fork swap for some ideas on which way to go. For some reason its a popular thing to do. Can't think why.

Looks like the favoured way is to use the original stem and mod the triples to fit it.
I don't have an original stem :(
Just go into into the bearring and acc centre in either richmond or the port with both sizes that you need, it's amazing the different sizes they can get/have.
Beats the hell out of swapping stems/trees/forks.

New bearings may work if sizes available but if the length is an issue machining is required anyway so why not start from scratch.
I'm curious how your going to put mounts for the twin shocks onto the DR swing arm. Is the alloy really going to handle the loadings or does it need beefing up?

The shocks will mount as far back as possible along the swingarm.
The alloy can handle the loads from landing a jump with the shock mounted right up the front.
With the shocks mounting very close to the line of the axle there's almost no stress on the swingarm at all.
I'm also thinking that with the exhaust I can use the original layout of the headers (4-into-2) under the engine and have the collector (2-into-1) coming up through the gap in the front of the swingarm where the shock was to the SuperTrapp or similar exhaust.

Test fitted the rear brakes and found I'll have to mount the shocks to the outside of the swingarm to clear the caliper...
