Now to break them in as much as possible before the race...

In the interests of science, I did try for more, but that's it.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160330/82a5c42a9e8eb5d73dcbd3c81dc214b9.jpg
Ahh...
I was running the FCR39 pumper carb.
The intake manifold side is a couple of mm bigger in diameter than the stock BST40.
The old engine rubber manifold has hardened over the last few years...
Not a hope in hell of it fitting. Not a hope in hell of swapping the manifolds either.
Not to worry, I also bought the old DynoJet needled, worked BST from the old setup.
Oops, the vacuum port broke when the engine fell over on it in the back of the van last night...
Bluetac to the rescue!
Oops, no carb breather with filter either...
Some chux cloth and a zip tie should do that in the meantime...
A nice blood transfusion and lets see what happens!
Oops, that is a hell of a clattery noise...
Shouldn't really do that...
Crack the top oil banjo and press the button, yay! Oil!
Ok, it seems the clattering was the starter motor catching up with and hitting the gears on each piston stroke as it tried to fire.
It lives!

NordieBoy
31st March 2016, 07:36
Um, does the 'clattering' sound like the 'clattering' of the other engine??
Nah, this was the piston getting pushed down with a spark, but then the starter catching up as it decelerated and clunking.
I was keeping my thumb on the button to keep it turning over and get some oil through the system.
Cracked the top oil banjo and there was definitely pressure there so that was sweet.
Bursts of starter motor and it sounds a lot better. When it finally ran, it sounded fine.

On the rare occasion im going a short distance, eg ride to work or testing station up road etc I go sans earplugs. This is always a hideous experience especially on the GSXR hearing engine noise you don't normally hear!
NordieBoy
6th April 2016, 08:24
Old engine runs quite nicely.
The chain is getting tight links though. It's only 3,000km old. The last one went 15,000 km.
It'll be interesting to see how many km I get from a tank with the stock(ish) carb vs the pumper.
The pumper did need an overhaul though. The bleed valve wasn't working and the throttle cables were badly mounted.
Now it's getting colder, I need to find where my extended choke knob is. The BST carb hasn't been on the bike for years and somehow it got a short choke knob installed.
NordieBoy
6th April 2016, 18:47

I get 21.5 klm/l from my FCR on the 530. Its the best mileage I've had from any of my KTM's and the previous 2 were both FI. Go the mighty FCR! (cept for sorting jetting to eliminate popping on decal that is.- yes I have checked the exhaust for leaks)

The DR had to be crash started twice today (only worked in 4th gear).
It may have been the battery, as I very nearly flattened it when doing the transplant. The headlight was going, but not a sausage from the starter. Wasn't the normal DR starter issue either.
Once I got it going, the starter tried a little and when I got home after a 12min run, it started it 3 times no problem.
Just had it on charge for 5hrs. Will check it out tomorrow.

Dunno whot Rog has on his 650, riding behind that is like going through an artillery barrage!
That's mostly because of the exhaust. It's an FMF + GSXR muffler. Usually the only time that it back fires is when I give it a good fist full of throttle and then back off really quickly.
The carb is also an FCR39.

13th January 2018, 20:36
Another DR650?
Nope. Going for something different.
After 11 years and 176,000km, it's time for a change.
The wiring loom needs replacing (lots of bare copper showing with all those k's and years of vibes) and more work to really get it going properly.
Looking at more road biased, but still gravelable.
Cheap is important :)
Most likely going to part out all the DR bits.
2 sets of forks, 2 sets of wheels, modded Corbin seat, IMS tank, FCR39 carb, 2 engines (1 needs the cam chain guides replacing), brand new chain, sprockets and front tyre (dammit. died hours after I replaced them) etc, etc...
The Kiwi on the front guard will be transferred to the new bike with a small ceremony.

2012 XL700V
Emulators and springs in the front, something in the rear and something done to the mapping.
Bars are up and forward, but otherwise standard.
Took it for a test ride up the Maungatapu to the head of the dam (as you do) and it went very well.
Standing climbing was annoying because of the tank, but standing descending was fine.
The centre stand digs big gouges when gravity asserts itself after jumping the water bars climbing up from the dam :innocent:
Rocks, wet clay, gorse, no issues. It actually suits my nana riding style better than the DR.
The DR does however protest less over the jumps
It's really well balanced, changing direction in the gravel was no problem, quite stable seated or standing.
Can't wait for the road tyres to wear out so I can get some Shinko 705's on it.
It actually came with a set of Shinko 805's spare. Which I'll never use.
Oh, and the screen is very Padmei-esq in that the wind hits me in the middle of my visor and blurs my vision.

Would not a smaller rear wheel slow it down and a lower speed shown (at the same rev's) ... regardless of error ... ???Had a hard think about it too :)
That would be the case with a gearbox (rpm) driven speedo, this is off the rear wheel.
Less distance traveled per revolution of the wheel.
It thinks you're doing 1km, when in fact you're doing 900m.

Will cut them off and if I put some on later, they'll be neoprene sleeves. The fan kicks in at 103° and cuts out at 100°
That was happening a lot...
Now in 30° outside temps, I can go over the port hills at 40kph and it'll sit at 85° and on the highway at 75°.
Fork gaiters...
Before, on the open road, it'd be sitting on 95° and higher.
The screen is however still crap :(
May try flattening the curve up top to even out the wind flow.

Mine cruises at about 70 C, and on hot days the fan starts up at about 103 if i get caught in traffic, or park up to open the farm gates. The TransAlp 700 does seem to run warm.
Haven't checked the speedo yet but that might explain being tailgated by a monster logging truck about 2m from my number plate at an indicated 80 kmh near Napier airport. Maybe not.

2018 Coppermine Classic Race.
39km in 2:48min
Possible rain was forecast for the race, so I decided that after racing the Unit as a hard tail in 2015, the Diamondback 26" as a hardtail in 2016 and the Unit as a rigid in 2017, that I'd continue the theme and race the 26" Chameleon with some Highroller II's front and rear just to make sure.
140mm of travel and lots of grip should do the job nicely.
Come race morning, I jumped on the bike to ride to the race village and 5min later, noticed that the eccentric bottom bracket was 5mm over to the right. Hmm, I don't remember making THAT much of a mistake.
I didn't.
The pinch bolt for the EBB wedge had broken, again :(
Zapped back home and quickly put some sealant in the Unit's racey low profile tyres, strapped a spare tube to the frame and the race number to the handlebars. Into the Estima and off (again).
Forgot I'd meant to test the rear brakes as they'd been leaking out of the olive at the lever end...
The climb went well, I felt I was significantly faster than last year, but was actually 6 minutes slower and the descent down Boulder Valley, well, was painful.
Arms, kidneys and hands.
It felt like there was no high speed suppleness at all.
It was only 1 min faster down Boulder Valley than the rigid was. 1 minute over a 24 minute descent...
The rear brakes basically don't get used until 2hours into the race.
They were nice and smooth, just felt like the pads were a little contaminated.
The front however squealed like a sty full of piglets.
The road section was a killer for anyone on a single speed. I was doing 160rpm for a few bits and people were still catching and passing me on the flats, but I'd get them back on the rises.
Overall, a perfect day for a back country race, no wind and an occasional smattering of raindrops.
Everyone got a t-shirt, burger and beer/ginger beer.
Except the single speeders who got 2 beers :)
2nd in Single Speed out of at least 3.
The forks look like they've only used 50mm or so of the 100mm of travel.
I've switched it back to rigid again until I can get the forks re-furbished.
Both rims are still as straight as when I built them, unlike some who came out onto the Maitai Rd section with knobbly encased pretzels mounted to their bikes. So funny to ride behind them...

2up down the Maungatapu and a stray rock, tucked front wheel and no more oil filter cover or oil filler cap.

Xl700V gearing...
So the stock gearing is 15/47 with a 525 chain.
I'm cruising in 5th gear-4,000rpm at 100kph.
Seems a little low rev-wise.
NordieBro had a ride last night and said "man, you've got to slip the clutch taking off!"
I'd told him that, but he just thought I was being a wimp.
I finally got the front sprocket cover off and counted 16 teeth. That'll make a difference.
Then I counted the rear teeth...
43
Fourty-bloody-three!
It's geared up 15%
I can cruise at 4,300rpm in 4th gear at 100kph at the moment.
With stock gearing it'd be 4,500rpm at 100kph in 5th!
At the moment, 4th gear is higher than the stock 5th and stock 5th is good for 180kph!
It's a wonder it made it through the Maungatapu at all! Man that engine has a good bottom end

Oh, and last night coming back from St Arnaud at about 10pm, the headlight on dip beautifully illuminated a section from the bike to about 20m ahead...
High beam did the same but added a spot of light to about 30m.
That was scary
I had no idea how to adjust the height so just rode home.
It seems there's a knob under the dash you just turn with your fingers
The access seems to be made for small Asian hands, but it works...

Had to modify the S180T mounting system.
The grub screws press on a thin metal plate inside the rubber to spread the load across the screen, but the plates walk when the screws get a bit of load on them.
I found some 2.5mm alloy from an old dash mount I made for the Nordwest and countersunk some 5mm depressions where the screws touch so they stay captive on the plate.
It even works!

Favorite grips from the last 20 years are Progrip 699 and 714.
They're both nice and soft, the 714 Rally is more barrel shaped.
City Motorcycles has the 699 for $20.
I prefer the 714's on the adventure bikes as they're a bit bigger diameter.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180311/4387e014d092d73ecaf8480a10cdc945.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180311/f97a37b6ea088f9cccdc9c23cc8111e2.jpg

Bodged up an old Givi plate to mount a ToolPro box that can take a laptop in comfort today.
Ended up slapping a sheet of 1.5mm rubber over the Givi plate and some 8mm bolts though where the rubber bumpers were.
Wobbles a bit, but that's just the inherent flexibility of the box.
I'll cut out a bit of road sign and put that inside the box for a bit of stability later.
If I can work out how to make it easily removable, I'll mount it much further forward over the pillion seat.

Within 0.04mm lateral runout!
Much easier truing/tensioning wheels that have already bedded in.
A very cheap pair of new looking Bontrager Race wheels. Tubeless ready and asymmetric rear.
Newer, lighter and wider (17.5mm vs 15mm) than my old Mavic Aksium's. Standard double butted J-bend spokes are a bonus.
Hell, they're wider than my Roval MTB wheels!
People have been having them crack around the nipple holes, but with the OEM tensioning, I can see why.
More than 30% variance on the drive side rear and a max tension of about 90kgf.
I tensioned them to 105kgf with the tyre mounted. If they feel flexy after a few rides, I'll take them up another 5kgf.

Shimano 685 11 speed brake/shifters, Wolftooth Tanpan SH11 so I can use an MTB 10 speed clutch mech, One Industries Rad Cage on the Zee mech to clear the cogs.
It's a bit dodgy on the 40t, so I think I'll be using it as a 10 speed 11-35 cassette with a 40t spoke protector.
May even go from the 36t front to a 34t which will let me move the chainline in a couple of mm.

I seem to remember a TT350 parked up on some armco in the buller gorge with out a rear wheel...
on a return trip back from Deniston ...
...
Having to wait for the tyre to cool down  Was getting a bit squirrely.
Trying to stuff a huge Pirelli tube into a little 705 tyre. There were several folds needed :nya:

Just finished building my new lightweight tubeless wheels for the Anthem.
New:
WTB Frequency Team i25 rim, DT Swiss Competition double butted spokes, Hope Pro 2 EVO hub, Ashima rotor.
1095g
339655
Old:
Stock Giant P-XC2 19mm internal.
1060g
339656
:pinch::Oops::wacko::facepalm::brick:
Oh well, at least they'll be wider and lighter without the tube...

The rear however, is 200g lighter than the old one...
The bike should feel totally different to ride though.
The stability of wheels tensioned to 120kgf +/- 5% with 25mm internal rims vs the old 17mm rear and 19mm front and should be sweet :2thumbsup

And the bike is now 400g heavier than last time it was weighed :)
Lighter tyres and a carbon seatpost make quite a difference.
I do like my dropper and grippy front tyre though.

3 loaded Triumph Tigers went past in town today. All 3 riders were wearing flip-flops, shorts and singlets.
Made me shiver even though it was 34°.

Oh dear :(
I may have killed the battery in the FransAlp...
I forgot to disconnect it when we went on holiday

Disconnect it from what? Battery charger?
From the bike.
I think the Honda security system drained it over the month...

Serviced the forks on the Giant Anthem tonight.
Very easy to pop the lowers off and replace the foam rings and seals.
There's wear on the front right of the right stanchion. No debris in the fork leg and the bush looks ok. The wear is definitely from the bush though.
New seals and 160ml of 10w in the damper bath, 30ml in the air bath and 5ml of FFFF (Fake Fox Float Fluid) in the air spring side.
There was maybe 50ml or more of nice green 10w oil in the air upper instead of 5ml of 85w.
That may have been acting like a couple of tokens and helping the ramp-up as I could never get past about 60%.
Lots of white gunge instead of oil in the damper side.
Now to do some more research and see if it really was meant to be 160ml in the damper bath...

Also a Wolftooth GoatLink and One Industries extended cage just because they were lying around.
I've also got a 42t sprocket if this one isn't low enough :)

Didn't even need to hide the driving lights!
Easiest WoF I've ever had.
