:whistle:never :D I've discovered that it is very easy to "adjust" the card and have had good results so far (much more mid range - I want low end and mid range there is plenty of top end for the riding I do). I have a feeling I can do better still using the info MX_robs thread re getting rid of the lean spot just of idle, getting the needle in the right position (and stopping needle/needle jet wear which isn't good at the moment) and getting the pilot screw set correctly (very easy now I know how to do it).
The only modification I've made so far that is not easily reversed is the hole in the slide (which I do doubt the worth of) and the only other one I plan at this stage is the spring cut. Maybe one day I'll get the ktm 640 needle and make an extra hole in the air box but for now I want to get the stock parts to work correctly.
It seems that Suzuki were so close with the Yanky spec and with three very minor improvements can make the bike not only run better have less wear in the carb!!!! Interesting that MX-rob found the stock yanky main and pilot jets to perfect for the close to stock set up though - who needs dyno jet jets :whistle:

Did the 7mm spacer, pilot jet and spring cut today. The spring cut works really really well. I can now ride around at 45kph in third gear the the bike is running smoothly. The spring makes a huge difference to smoothness.
I measured how much the needle was protruding from the bottom of the slide before and after the mod. The needle is about 3mm higher with the mode so I'm not sure about the needle lift yet. I'll give it a tank full and see what happens to the fuel economy before I make a judgement on this. The wear on the needle and needle jet means it is probably a bit rich. Seems to pull well but I wouldn't say it has strong wheely grunt though -feels very similar to when the needle was 3mm lower.

I didn't do that as I felt that by shortening the spring about 3mm (or less) you're increasing stiffness and reducing preload which will let the slide respond quicker off the bottom but slower through the midrange.

Dont worry. After reading all 61 pages of MX_robs thread I realised that I need to stay with the 6f23 needle anyway.
I'm half tempted to get a set of plastic washers about .5mm thick and make a stack 6.5mm thick. This is to allow for the wear in the needle and needle jet i.e. needle .5mm lower and the plastic stack so I can easily adjust the height. I have to file a spacer to length at the moment which is a PITA.

Right...
Just accidently (honest) did the Ben Nevis - Boundary Road loop today.
The loop itself is just over 11km but there's about 10km of gravel up the Wairoa Gorge from Brightwater to get to the start and another 4-5km of Pig Valley gravel out the other end into Wakefield as well.

We were doing a classic mx about half way up 88 Valley once and my brother needed to zap around to Pig Valley to get some spares and took my Nordie.
When he got back the mirror had vibrated loose (from slightly excess speed) and he had this stupid grin on his face and said "man I'm glad I don't have one of them, I'd be in soooo much trouble". :D

2.5cm down and 2.5cm back.
1cm thick steel...
It will hang down a bit but only as much as the shock linkages.
Any rock that gets in it's way will have the bruises to show for it.

They is already rizzed pretty much as far as they can be with the stock cables...

Seated the bars are at the right height for me but standing I'm hunched over too much.
It's the peg to seat distance that needs tuning now.

i like the idea of putting the pegs lower as it will improve the seating position for those gifted with long legs. incl myself. feel its wee bit buched up at the moment, also i guess it will lower the center of gravity a bit too esp. when standing. Wats the reason you want to put the further back? would you have to mod the rr brake and shift lever?

It was first posted a while ago and the other option was the MaxKool style cutting/welding the pegs but that just lowers them and isn't reversable.
Don't like the idea of using 6mm alloy though :D
I think the original used 1cm steel.
And I found an old CAD drawing of my Nordie dash and thought "that was fun, hmmm, I'll give it a burl."

With the adjustable ones make sure the head of the bolts holding the plates to the frame don't clash with the peg risers. You might need spacers (couple of washers) or a bolt head grind to get around this.
The other positive I see about this is that the pegs should be further out from the bike and should support my size 13's more evenly rather than just the inside 30mm or so.

That's where the 2.5cm down comes in.
You should be able to have them directly below and still clear the bolt heads.

It's an ex-chain.
First noticed it having problems coming back from the Mangarakau ride with jatz when I was hearing a lot of noise and feeling the vibes through the footpegs and it took 2 steps on the adjuster to re-tension it.
After tuesdays 250km ride around Nelson with marks it needed 3 steps to re-tension and has a few tight links.
The DID x ring that was on the bike when I got it did over 30000km and never got this bad.

My little bro says it's about time we went around the spooners again as the last time we did it was my first ride on my XR250 and Shane was on the Nordie and we did over 100km of pure(ish) gravel and forestry roads/firebreaks/bogs/shell piles :scooter:

I got up bright(ish) and early(ish) on tuesday and headed off through the Maungatapu to meet marks in Pelorus for a hot choccy (with 2 marshmallows) for a day of riding.
The Maungatapu was a bit slippery in the 6-7 deg temps but we got back to Nelson without issues.
A quick stop at home to check tyre pressures and drop off some luggage and we were off...
We headed off around the Coastal Highway to Apple Valley Road, Old Coach Road, Riverside, Chings, Waiwhero, Rosedale, Orinoco (my first complete bike slide due to diesel), Mt Arthur, West Bank, Sunday Creek, Dovedale Hill, Church Valley, Pig Valley, Wairoa Gorge and back home via the Port Hills.
Temps went from 6-20-7 deg through the day.
250km in 6 1/2 hrs of cruising and taking photos.
I had to take out about 2 hours of gravel as we didn't have time.
As it was, we only finished at about 6:30pm.
A good fun day mate, glad you could stop by.

Looks like that if you want to "hunt" in the forestry around the Spooners Range you just need to drop in to the guardhouse at the MDF plant and ask for a "hunting" permit (dunno about cost).
Remember to sharpen an end of a tyre iron for sticking pigs though :D

Went for a tiki-tour up Northbank Road with the intention of maybe finding out how to get up past Lake Chalice to Mt Patriarch but only got as far as Pine Valley/Mill Flat before I had run out of time (5 hours riding from NSN-NSN as it was).

That ride went from 6-18-7 deg over the day.
Friday over to Pelorus was 3 deg turning up to the caretakers up the Maitai.
Today was 10 deg at the same spot.

I am just trying to get some 17in wheels fitted so need a speedo and better still a tacho. Are you still happy with yours and if not what would you change to? I have no plans for creating a SuperNordieWonderDash just need the basics for legal WOF reasons - but would love a Tacho for the track.
By the way thanks to you and others for the advice from this thread and the DR650 thread, I have learned heaps in the last year.

I'm happy with mine but I'd go with the Trailtech Vaypor(sp?).
They're available in NZ as opposed to getting it from overseas.
There's one on TradeMe at the moment with the DR mounting kit.
Speedo/RPM/temp/shift-light etc.
Bonus with the Acewell is that it bolts to the existing speedo backing plate and doesn't require an adapter.

That was the toughest most exhausting race I've ever done.
Mud, mud, mud and for variety, clay.
A 1979 XR250 was possibly the worst choice of bike.
It's a tractor and works best at low and mid revs and to get up the slopes/hills/north face of the eiger you needed lotsa revs to dig down and also keep the knobs clear. Get it right and the section may take 5 seconds. Get it wrong and it may take 5 minutes.
Rained on and off throughout the race but only lightly.
My 1st lap was mainly spent pushing up hills and resting at the tops.
My 2nd lap was a bit better and there were 2 hills I got up first time :)
My 3rd lap was my best. I only got stuck on 4 sections and came past the finish line in about 3hr 5min.
I spent 15min getting up 1 hill on the 1st lap.
Most people lapped me whilst I was still on my first lap but I finished and quite a few didn't. They probably did more laps than me though.
Warewolf kept lapping me regularly :D
My helmet cam didn't want to turn on for the start of the race so no pics or movies :(
It's working fine now of course.

I rode home in my MX gear and waterproof kayak top as it was covered in mud and I couldn't be bothered changing.
At Foxhill someone turned the lights onto dim and it started to rain.
Just before Wakefield the big light in the sky went out and it was like hitting a solid wall of water.
Within seconds the rain was inside my visor and visibility had reduced to about 20m and there were still cars without lights on!
It took about 3 seconds of this before I was completely soaked through and getting a bit cold.
3 hours of on and off rain and creek crossings during the race hadn't managed to get the water through my boots to my bread bag protected footsies. They were now soaked.
The ride home was almost harder than the race.

Sounds like a heap of fun. Bikers are funny, I bet that in two weeks time it will be all fond memories and a laugh! We can put up with a heap of discomfort for a few moments that are jewels of memory.
Nice one Nordie, its good to see people having a go!

I went to turn the camera on whilst heading over to the shotgun start at the 3-hour and it wouldn't turn on at all.
Just needed the batteries popping and reinserting :(

Yep - ATC2K 320x200 @ 15fps.
Next MX race I'll try 640x480 @ 30fps.
It's helmet mounted now and in no way involves drilling a 4mm hole in the helmet and drilling and milling an appropriate hole in the ATC mount and bolting it to the helmet next to the metalwork from the chinstrap.
No not at all.
I'm working my way through the different popcorn versions on my vids :D
That was the Hot Butter techno mix from 1999.

Warewolf kept lapping me regularly :D...and I was too busy trying to stay upright that I didn't even notice!! It was very, very greasy everywhere, which made it a lot of fun. Glad I had pretty decent tyres. I reckon it was as hard as the 6 hour last year, run in similar weather conditions - but with a better surface so it wasn't as intense.
Very, very good practice for bike control.

how long do the AAs last though? especially on the ATC5K with the view screen?
couldnt find anything that said how long batterys will last just that it took AA batteries.

It can be used for everything.
The video quality isn't the best and the sound is awful but people keep using them :D
The batteries (I use 2300maH AA's) last about 3 hours - less when it's cold.

So I quickly cancelled all my plans and jumped on the mighty DR and headed off up the Maungatapu.
The view going up the track was amazing.
Nikau and cabbage tree fronds covered in snow with the dark background and the track winding through the snow dusted manuka.

Mostly just a wet track with some boggy slick clay bits and a few icy bits but no problems even with my bald rear tyre.
You're only riding on the snow at the summit.

Testing my new helmetcam mount up the Maungatapu.
It was pointed a little lower than I'd have liked but the sound has no induced vibration this time and what little audio there is actually came out(ish).

I like the "loop" feature of some of the recorders.
Always recording and when you press the button it saves the last 3min (customizable) onto the card.
It's much easier to press a button after something cool than before :D

Cycletreads bunged on an IRC GP110 rear yesterday.
Looking at the tread and thinking about it, I like some of the things they've done with it.
An almost solid centre bead but only about 1cm wide.
Wider spaced knobs as you're just leaned over a bit and then closer spacing when you lean over to the edge.
The knob edge is tapered to a wider base so there should be no tearing.
Impressions...
I havn't fallen off in the 10km so far.
The carcass of the TW42 is much thicker than the E-07.
In the centre of the tread on the 07 you could almost feel your own fingerprints it was so thin and compliant whereas the 42 is much thicker and stiffer.
I think that compliance is one reason the 07 gripped so well even when bald.

Nope, no dust at all.
E-09's on the GS.
The rear looks quite nice but the front looks to be more off road biased than the rear.
I'd match the rear up with something more like an IRC GP21 or TKC80 to give a bit more confidence in the front on the seal.

Lowered the brake pedal and have left the shifter alone for the time being.
Having the peg mount flat against the adapter also means there is no cushioning effect from the rubber dampers anymore and apart from a bit of buzz through the pegs, I like it.
Seated feels fine and standing...
All I can say is...
Why the hell don't they come like this from the factory?
Just the 2.5cm back would make a huge difference to the shorties out there.
The bike feels more planted and with the weight further back, where you would be lightening the front over a rise it now comes up over horizontal which never used to happen with me :2thumbsup
My seat is now slightly the wrong shape and needs to stay a bit skinnier a bit longer but it'll do.

How often does your bashplate actually hit?
I reckon with the angle on the front of the hanger and being made from some sturdy steel like that, they'd be all good.

You're right, it certainly is a rare occurence but when it occurs it is memorable! :shit:
Another option is to just move them back (depends on your leg length) which will maintain the clearance but still get your feet more under your body and help get rid of that armchair seating position.
I use the term "armchair" fairly loosely when refering too DR's and seating. :mellow:

Moving back would be do-able but it would have to also be dropped 1.5cm or so but not the 2.5cm of mine.
Just cranked up qCAD and the current peg bolts are on a 40mm centre so 20mm back and 20mm down would be an absolute minimum and even then you may have to grind a bit out of either the bolt heads or the back of the footpegs.
If you go 25mm back then you have to go 25mm down to clear the bolts.

My thinking was to reuse the existing mounts by relocating the pegs back one hole (front bolt goes into rear frame mount) and fitting a piece of thin angle, with 3 holes in it, between the frame mounts and the footpegs.
Front hole lines up with the front frame mount, second hole aligns with rear frame mount and carries the front peg mount, third hole carries the rear peg mount.
Admitedly, this cunning plan has been developed with a cursory glance at the mounting arrangement and no measurements but I still like it!

You could probably do it with just the 10mm bar.
The rear peg mount would have to be threaded into the bar but not a biggie.
Only issue is that then the pegs would be 40mm back and unless you've got size 30 boots the levers may be a bit far away.
I would have happily gone with cutting the existing pegs down 25mm or so untill I tried it with them back 25mm as well.
The bike feels more balanced with them back and standing feels much better with them lower.

A bit more of a play today and I think I'm hooked.
I don't think I could go back to the standard height/placement now.
I think I would have been happy with just shortening the pegs but down and back is even better.
Long term I'm going to have to trim the seat a bit more but I think I'll ride it for a couple of months and see which bits annoy me first just to make sure before I cut up the seat (again).

you seem to have stumbled upon what modern trials bike manuacturers have been doing for years. results are better manouvering of the bike throug foot input and the bike commingup under power with less effort and more control!

No stumbling involved. I knew what would happen just not the extent :D
The bike was easier to flick around when the pegs were higher partly because I was attached to the bike closer to the centre of mass and partly because I had shaped the seat to suit me for that riding style.
Now I find I don't have the room to let the bike move under me as much (I hate gripping with my knees) and need to trim the sides of the seat 2.5cm or so each side for an additional 10cm or so back keeping it narrower for longer.

Bled the brakes today (yay for fast bleeder valves) the front was fine but the back (never done) was black.
I'd set the compression damping to max when I put the stronger springs in and had a think about it today and set it to minimum to see what happens.
The front Golden Boy SR244 has done 17200km now and has another couple of thousand in it.
I've got the new fork seals but they're not in yet.

It's a Zeus 2100B titanium colour and cost $199.
I like it so far...

Pushes about 94dB according to mx_rob's meter.It reminds me of the Staintunes on the Triumph. They are actually quieter than stock, according to the tests in NSW, done at 50% of max power rpms. But they are louder/sweeter than stock at idle and high rpm. And 3.5kg lighter each and liberate a few ponies... without being offensively loud.
What did you use to get the sound bites, they sound clearer than most? I would like to get some samples done of the 640A, with the EU/AU standard exhaust, US standard exhaust (supertrapp) and then the modified US exhaust.

Yep defiantly need some sort of steel - no idea what sorry. 38mm might be a little small for the rear wheel spacer on the XTZ - it is thin but large diameter.

Are now done.
Only problem with these is I don't want to drill and tap the top clamps for my GPS as they're a bit thinner than the ones on the bike.
I may make up a mount higher up inside the screen Dakar style.

160 main, needle 4th from top, 45 pilot, 1.2 pilot air. Big time bogging.

155 main, needle 2nd from top, 42.5 pilot, 1.2 pilot air. Minimal(ish) bogging - pronounced popping on the overrun.
70-100kph in 4th gear was about 3 secs which is the equal of anything I got out of the dynotuned SuperTrapp setup.
45 pilot going back in when it cools down to check the difference on the overrun...
45 pilot made quite a difference to the popping.
It's still there but not as intrusive.

Hmmm...that's a reasonable distance.
The DRZ 400 we had problems with would destroy rear bearings in only
1000 Km. Inspection revealed a munted spacer tube which was replaced
with a new one ordered in from Japan.
The new bearings then only lasted 600 Km ! :shit:
Further inspection showed that the new spacer tube was 3mm
too short, causing undue lateral pressure on the bearings when the axle
nut was tightened.:confused:
I doubt this is your problem, but it's worth a look I suppose.

i just stripped my DR down to the frame over the weekend am planning to build it up from scratch. so also got the wheels of.
1. how can one tell the bearings are gone?? i checked mine yesterday. they seem pretty sollid with no movement. so i guess they are good??
2. i've got 2 broken spokes on the rear wheel again.. had this twice before now! is this commen?? dont do any "harsh" off road stuff much at all.
(I do like my wheelies... :eek: )
3. (as i'm typing anyway...) Am planning to paint the frame a different colour prob black. dont really want to powder coat as i like doing stuff myself. was planning on using CRC zink paint stuff and then metal protect clear coat out of spray cans. any idea's on that???
4. My GF was most upset when I told her the purple frame would be gone :laugh:

Grab the back of the wheel and move it side-to-side. You'll know if the bearing is going/gone :D

My wife never gave up hassling me about the purple frame of my one either. I did put a purple sprocket (chain gang) and gold chain (EK) on it to go with the purple and yellow seat. Cant do a half hearted job now :D
Broken spokes may be because they are not all at the correct(ish) tension so are overloading one or two. Check all of the spokes when replacing one or two.

Tempted as they come with dust seals and I've had stuff from him before.
The other bearings are smooth and sweet so I just did the 1 for just $18 and I re-used the seal.

It was fine.
Both screws were tight.
I undid the accessible one and put some studlock on it and did it back up and if I'd had a 29mm? socket I would have had the clutch off and done the other as well.
The bonus is that the light works now <_<
EDIT: Just a thought but I wonder if anyone has used some metal epoxy/JB Weld and put some wire mesh over that hole below the NSU. Should stop anything larger than oil getting into the gearbox?

You need the "tool". I got a 6mm ring spanner and a Phillips head bit (from a multi bit screwdriver set) and hammered it in (was a nice tight fit). By grinding some of the top of the bit there was just enough room to fit it between the screw and the clutch basket. I could bring the tool up at Xmas if you want (you still got it Transalper?).
Alternatively and possibly better would be to remove the Phillips head screws completely and replace them with hex head bolts. Much easier to tighten. Once lock tighted there seems to be no problems from my reading.

4 10mm bolts and one 29mm and the clutch is off.
I was going to go to hex heads but that'll wait untill next time I'm in there.
I was going to make one of those tools but as it was still tight and I needed to get to my next job I just studlocked the one I could get to and bolted the case back up.
They normally start to get loose about 10,000 miles or so and mine has done about 50,000km and they were still tight and now one is tight and loctited as well :)

Noticed the 14T JT front sprocket is getting past it.
It's basically done 15,000km and is about as worn as the PBR 14T at 6,000km.
22,000km on the 43T rear and it still looks good.
Next time I replace the chain I'll go to a 520 setup.
The first RK 525 XSO chain was dead at 8,500km (after the last ride I did on it I had to adjust it 3 notches) and the current chain has done just over 8,000km and is still sweet even with 2up trips through the Maungatapu, Mt Duppa, etc and lots of river crossings which is what I think killed the last one.
The DID X-Ring that was on the bike when I got it got pulled off at 30,000km and is still in pretty good condition length-wise but had a few tight links.

I just had my one fall of a couple of months back and ended up pulling the clutch of. the worst part was i could not find the screws andthe other bits....
took me long time to get them out!!!!!!!
I ended up making a magnetic probe. I cut up one of those magnetic screw bit holders (have about 10 of them anyway..) got the tiny magnet out (3x5mm) wich was verry strong for its size! I used a piece of wire and made a tiny little basket for the magnet on the end of it using needle nose pliers. i poked it into the oil drain hole and got all the bits out 2 screws spring and switch pin thing.
Best fishing i've ever done!!!! still have the probe, has proven handy ina few other occasions.
ah... then after i got all my bits out i decided to fish a round a bit more just in case... and uhm.... ended up fishing another small screw out of there..... problem is i realy dont know what that one would be from...... so i asumend it must have been a screw from the neutral light switch that would have fallen out before with the previous owner... and his lazy mechanic did not go looking for it.... I hope...... cant find anything else in the manual that looks like that screw inside the engine

I also finally did something about the ringing sound the washer under the shock bump-stop was making and dribbled superfix all over the top of the washer and jammed the bumpstop down on it.

Only problem now is without the noise back there the tingling from something loose around the dash area is grabbing my attention dammit!

Actually when idling it is a good mellow thump but as it revs up the pulses blend a bit and it effectively gets quieter.
Having no "edge" to the pulses it gets lost in the wind noise at open road speeds.
It's booked in for a 15T sprocket and oil change today.

Decided to take them for a test drive today.
Up to the first pylon track(ling) on the left that overlooks Rabbit Island up the Maungatapu.
24f/26r psi.
First impression on the seal is a bit more noise and vibration and you can really feel the front knobs under braking but seem nice and stable.
On the gravel up to the caretakers they worked quite nicely. Probably the best gravel combo I've tried so far but with that knob spacing and depth they should be. Smooth and progressive when they do slide and a nice positive front.
Standing up in 2nd gear under power going up the first steep bit after the ford at the start and it's just spinning up. No traction or drive even compared to the GP110.
Along the middle section past the head of the dam and at the speeds I went with the very worn GP110 the rear and to an extent the front was very prone to deflection off all and sundry rocks.
The steep shaley bit up to the first bridge was another exercise in wheelspinning frustration with forward progress being half that of the SR244 or GP110 that seemed to use rocks for traction rather than just shove them out of the way in an attempt to get down to the good stuff below.
Onto the hard clay and they went better and in the wet clay proved to have more grip than the other non-knobblies (duh).
Going back down the loose shale and I liked the rear a lot. Better than the SR244.
If you're a wheelspinner or don't do much steep loose stuff then they'd be sweet but I found myself wishing I'd had a rear E-07 or even a $70 SR244 on there.
Next outing will be at 18f/20r to see how they go at those pressures.

What pressures were you running?
About 21 - 22 as per bike specs. Does the pressurs make any difference to wear as if it will save them for a bit I'd put them at higher pressures for road then drop them for gravel.
Did you like the TKCs as I've been eyeing them or 606s for my next tyre trial

Unfortunately, off-road you want carcass flex to aid traction through conforming to the surface, increasing the contact area, and flexing to clear the tread.
So it's a bit of a juggling act. Changing tyre pressures from road to off-road is common. Also, increase the pressure to suit the load.

You trying MT21's Fran? I found them not as good as TKC's on the road, slid a bit earlier and similar off road but they have a stiffer sidewall which makes them less adjustable with pressure. The TKC's are very sensitve to pressure and, as Colin says, will wear very quickly if underinflated on the seal. I ran 25 front & 30 rear on the DR650 on the seal, 20 & 24 off road without rim locks.

Next Maungatapu ride I'll be trying 18f/20r psi on the MT21's.
My next rear will I think be a Mitas E-09 and then back to ones I've tried before (E-07/SR244) to see if they still ride like I remembered.
I'm using 28f/30r on the road at the moment and with the Shinko SR244's and E-07's I was using 34f/36r on road and 18f/20r off.
I don't ride hard enough on the road to get any sliding...

Well 18f/20r is much better mannered. Far less deflection off rocks but still breaks loose quite easily going up or down (or flat for that matter).
It's the first rear tyre I've run that has broken loose engine braking into a downhill corner.
It'll take some getting used to but I think it'll stay on 'till it's dead and then a couple of thousand more as per usual.
Should have about 1/3 tread left for the Dusty so should be sweet.

My 96er only had about quater of a cup of verry dirty grey drainwater looking stuff left in it. how was yours??

Well now the shock is done(ish) I can say that with 22f/24r and 10W oil it rides the bumps better than 18f/20r and 5W oil. Bearing in mind I'm using a 7.6kg/mm rear spring.
18f/20r should be very nice in the gravel/hills now :D
You don't get bumped around as much in seated washboard sections but you can hear/feel the engine revs playing up/dropping but what I liked was that if you were leaned over a bit and gassing through the washboards it tracked nice and smoothly with little variance in revs.
Next suspension mod (eventually) is emulators in the front.

MT21's front and rear.
28f/30r psi and it rides over rocks like a rubber ball, bouncing everywhere...
Up Ben Nevis yesterday and the back was jumping around on anything larger than gravel (which it went fine on at those pressures). Down to 18f/20r and it is soooo much better it isn't funny.
Got the shock gased up with 150psi of nitrogen today for $28. Would have been cheaper but it's a bugger to do on the DR with the shock in-situ and the valve sooo close to the mid-pipe clamp.
I'm also going to get another emulsion tube for the carb and see how much wear is on the original. I'm consistantly running leaner settings than expected and it's still feeling a bit rich.

Reckon I'm (over)due to replace the one in the 640A's BST40, because the exhaust has a hint of smoke. The Triumph went from blowing black smoke, to utterly clear, just from replacing the emulsion tubes.
While it is apart, check the piston guide for wear. If worn, it will wear the new needle jet in short order.

Pressure pulses shake the piston back and forth in the carb throat. Since the Jet Needle is held in the piston, and the Needle Jet is fixed in the carb body, eventually the needle ovalises the jet orifice, causing a hopelessly rich mixture that can't be tuned out by faffing with the other jets.
In the case of my Triumph, at 155,000km there was 1.5mm of wear in the piston guides, which meant it took <5,000km to destroy a new $140 set of emulsion tubes and send the fuel consumption skyrocketing by 50%. :weep:
Another problem is that the needle can wear at the (nearly-closed) contact point with the jet, and in a worst-case scenario can break off and be ingested by the cylinder.

I've had some rocks hit them but I had rocks hit the originals.
The only reason to pull them off would be if I made some new ones that did the same but didn't drop below the frame rails.
