Well the weatherman has changed his mind and seems to think it'll be fine with some cloud tomorrow so anyone keen to go for another spin?

Hazzy and I were thinking of going up north a little bit, inland from Port Chalmers and stuff. Bit of a route on Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=Dunedin,+Otago,+New+Zealand&daddr=port+chalmers+to:purakaunui,+otago+to:osborn e,+otago+to:waitati+to:mt+cargill+to:dunedin&layer=&mrcr=5&sll=-45.826646,170.564804&sspn=0.099643,0.270538&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=-45.837291,170.562057&spn=0.099624,0.270538&om=1). Thinking of leaving about 11am.
No idea what the road is like.. or even if its sealed...I think it is though.
Anyone welcome to join us. :)

A very relaxing day and pleasant riding. Maybe a bit too relaxing as I didn't get in the 800 km day I was hoping for, but I did manage 540 km including 3 hours night time riding which is what I really wanted anyway. I left Silverfern's place a bit before the others and headed down to Kaka Point where Stromfrau is doing a 3 day horse trek, then from there home via the Rongahere Rd.

Great to meet some new faces in the Otago group.

I don't start my brain up in the weekends, i sure as hell don't expect anyone else to...besides, nothing like a good, well organized KB run....were we all ride around the country and even pass each other traveling in different directions.... yep, i think i'll fit in KB just nicely.

looking ahead to next Sat's Easter Egg run - who's keen on another ride after its all over?? I would expect we'd be finished at the Octagon about 3:30, so a small local cruise with a pub or good coffee shop as a venue appeals to me

Whats the coffee like at Karitane - or is that too far? - Other suggestions, Larnocks Castle? or somewhere else down the Peninsula, Waihola Pub (via 3 mile hill, Outram and the back road along the foot of the Maungatuas), Taieri Mouth????

I'll probably just meet up with you at Carey's Bay around 1:30 - I've got to be seen at a school fair for a little while before the run. Based on the Toy run it seems that a lot more bikes join up at Logan Park than at Carey's Bay so its not too hard to find people out there. Having said that stick up a pre-meet meeting point and time and if I can get there I will.

Was more than a last minute thing, it was a last minute spur of the moment thing with side ways attachments and (i forgot to recheck the KB board just before I left )...

The list (bad chooice of words maybe... added to my address book...) errr hmmm and txting... invitation only... nah, every one invited there was no intention to exclusive or invitation only... just makes it quicker to organise as not every one is on the forum at the same time especially on the spur of the moment rides like that and the forum can have a big lagg waiting for an answer. Where as texting is a bit quicker and I can group text 10 names at a time (on the pre set list which most dunedin kbers are now on I think I only need tim's cell phone and I am not sure if he has one) The thing with spur of the moment is... there were no plans... on destinations and there was a lot of ummingand arring just before hand. once decided, we texted who we knew were coming.

I ended up going for my morning ride alone, then coming back for the afternoon ride, and missing a couple of posts by minutes... http://quantumillusions.com/biker/node/358

There was absolutely no intentions to have what may look like an exclusive group...

 We had to use txting on the most part as Jantar had already left for Dunedin, before we had even decided what we were gonna do in the afternoon... We had to adjust our times for his intended arrival time in dunedin

I don't want to be organising anything, I actually hate doing it.:eek5:  I just want to ride...:ride: So in future some else can organise the group rides... and i just tag on them if i still welcome join in

If we bogged up this site with every bike rally thats on (like every fortnight and sometimes more frequent) in the Sth Island we'd take over the bloody site - no we've got too much to do - and then add in all the great off road organized rides which is just about every weekend from Nov to May now. Spoilt we is - you just stay up there DOC man and enjoy the congestion, we're quite happy.

Next Saturday - charity ride will finish about 3:30 - who's keen for a ride after it and where.
Suggestions:
Larnocks Castle
Somewhere else down the Peninsula
Karitane
Taieri Mouth
Waihola

Is there a coffee place at Taieri Mouth? - or do we have to gatecrash a certain KB member on the way???

Please reply with a yes/no AND preferred destination

I'm keen. theres no coffee place at Taieri mouth. the road to Waihola from taieri mouth is gravel, can be fun for those who are used to those conditions.
also gravel for 70% of the road from Taieri mouth to milton, a few nice beachs off that road but all gravel.

Okay, sorry coach.

I'm a yes - Waihola sounds good, but not by SH1. What's your devious route?

How about via Brighton and Taieri Mouth? The unsealed road over to Waihola is not too bad for street bikes (although we cruiser riders may need to stop and polish every two minutes....).

The Black Swan at Waihola does a nice Devonshire Tea, although coffee choice might be limited to Greggs or Bushells.

You should try the Virago on gravel - a bit like a uni-cycle with buckhorns. Front wheel has a life of it's own - it does it's own thing, while I follow it as best I can. I may end up somewhere else altogether....

Cool, look forward to meeting you. If you do decide to tackle the dirt, you'll find it fairly good, not too corrugated, and the pace will be slow.

It'll be a nice biker's road when sealed, that's for sure.

My devious route??? - OK if we're going to be deviants - there are 2 suggestions, the first of which you have already covered being the ride over form Taieri Mouth. Given what I ride and do on gravel I could have all the coffees lined up and cold by the time you lot get there!!!!! Soooo, because there is significant reluctance already here on the gravel ride, and, theres a few newer members who I suspect wouldn't go if there is any gravel there is devious route 2 -----

Basically we leave Dun via 3 mile Hill, out to Outram, then along the back road at the base of the Maungatuas, come out at on the flood free highway at the southern airport turnoff, go straight over SH1 to Henley, over the Taieri on the old Henley bridge and follow the hills around till we meet SH1 again at Titri, straight over SH1 again and round the old main road to Waihola. All of this is sealed but it is a lot more interesting (ie more corners and less traffic) than SH1.
My understanding is that the Waihola pub also does an OK coffee but to be honest I've never had one there - has anyone else????

You're obviously expecting a long sealed section to end with then you cheeky bugga!!! - I take it you've got your radar detection working again?!

I did wonder about ending up out here - would be great for me not having to ride home afterwards - but not so good for the Dn crew, especially those allergic to gravel. It will definitely be a suggestion for a future ride but I suspect not till next spring/summer. On the other hand I do have a couple of thousand hazelnut trees about to start dropping their fruit - a bit of slave labour to help pick them up might be just the thing????? BBQ'd hazels go well with a good BBQ steak

Anyway it looks like this Sat we ride to Waihola after the Easter Egg run. Thanks Silverfern re the coffee report - looks like I'll meet you another time.

Weather doesn't look that flash but probably just occasional showers and a bit of a SW wind - shouldn't be too serious or character testing.

I don't mind gravel or grit on the road when I know it's there, its when you don't know its there and you hit it on a bend can be a bit hair raising.

But I have noticed that the council are getting worse at cleaning up there mess

In Jaffaland we don't tolerate that sort of service. Generally one buy's one's tyres where the in crowd is sampling the freshist coffee beans, of the day. From the best of the tyre shops in the basin. After all one must have the best view whilst shopping don't you think

There is also one Mobil petrol station where the owner used to be the top motorcycle salesman in Central Otago, and he is also a bloody good motorcycle mechanic. He doesn't stock any tyres but he is getting the Pirellis for me. I also found out that the last set of Bridgestone BW501/502s that I had fitted were the last in the country, and that was 2 months ago. :shit:

So, according to my logic, if they work out the forecast, then tell us the opposite, they must surely be right 60% of the time?

So, according to my logic, if they work out the forecast, then tell us the opposite, they must surely be right 60% of the time?

well thats logical mr spock

I remember the flashing lights - rode nervously for the rest of the gorge and down to Milton expecting either a cop or some disaster around every corner!!!! - and I was hoping to test the radar detector I have been setting up for use on the bike as well as the car and it didn't bloody go off!!!
Never mind - I made up for it on the way home as the road was drier and the pace just a little bit faster!!!

Yes You did miss another good friendly gathering of the KB fraternity Jantar, it was good meeting the new members I hadn't met before as that can help better direct the shit chucking on here!!!!
Silverfern we expect an update on the bike you were looking at - good luck.
BOTB - what can I say - the things you see when you haven't got a camera!!! Hope that leg comes right really fast.

Next KB ride???? - the idea of a ride down through the Catlins was mooted over a drink at Waihola. Sounds like a good idea to me - the main route through there is all sealed now but there are some nice diversions to things like the Purakanui falls and the Nugget Point Lighthouse that do require a bit of gravel and a short walk (that'll help keep that leg working D !!). WE've got some local knowledge down there now aye Daffyd so thats got to help with route planning. Given the time of year its probably best to have lunch down there somewhere (Kaka point or Owaka - unless you want to do the picnic thing again??)

Hi guys, I really want your reaction to this idea.
For something absolutely completely different - I got this idea buzzing around in my head. This farm owns a section of the old railway line as you get to the top of Round Hill. Over the years we've done a lot of development over other parts of the property but have never put this area high enough up the priority list for it to get anything done to it. Its covered in broom, some gorse, self seeded sycamore trees, willows..... AT the top end is the railway tunnel which goes under the road at the top of round hill (where we stopped on our way to Lawrence while I ducked up to the house to get something)
I've just been musing over setting up a bit of it for Kiwi Bikers to be able to plant some long lived tree species (eg Beech) that would offset the carbon emissions from their motorcycling activities - I'd have to probably put the chopper over it with a herbicide first. Plantings would be natives only, and I'd need to look at getting a covenant over it to protect the forest into the future. I need to find some info on how to calculate the carbon emissions from fuel and also the rate of carbon sequestration by the beech trees (I understand there is a project happening in NZ with Virgin Airlines along similar lines) so we can work out how many trees are needed by each individual to offset their bike's emissions.
The site is right beside SH8 so that once the trees get up a bit it would lend itself to a sign saying what its all about.
I want to test the idea on the local KB'rs first and see what the reaction is, and then see when I can chuck some money at it (unfortunately this high $ isn't helping the income at the moment).
So what do you reckon ? - would the biker community go for something like this? Would it make you feel better riding your bike in the knowledge that you have personally planted X trees to soak up the carbon coming out your pipes - and you can ride past them and see them each time you ride up SH8. (You would purchase and plant the trees yourselves - although if this gets support then I would get a bulk lot delivered on an organized planting day.)
Let me know what you think - positive or negative

If its for replacing gorse & broom with natives to enhance an area then count me in, and I may already have some natives that can go in. If its to offset carbon emmissions because of Climate Change then I wouldn't be interested.

Incidentally, I've got a piece of waste land on my property (about 800 square meters) that I am planting out in natives very shortly. The purpose is to encourage native birds, and I may have a few trees and shrubs left over.

Yes it will enhance the area, but yes it is with carbon emissions/climate change in mind (and yes I am aware of some of the debate around this topic but I don't want to open that can of worms here)

OK thanks for the feedback on this KB forest idea. Just thought I'd put some potential time frames around it, all going well, and some other comments.

Firstly thanks for the interest - looks like its a goer and I have little doubt that if I put this message on a thread of its own with definite dates and plans etc we'd get a lot of interest from KB'rs all over the country - however one step at a time and we'll save that for later.

One comment for the benefit of SD and XKNuts - I would propose planting quite large beech trees (about 3ft high) - ie planter bag size rather than bare root or small seedling size. These trees actually do grow quite fast and I'm sure in the normal course of events you will both live long enough to see a very satisfying forest emerging from the residue of what was there before.!!! - just stay healthy OK!!

Time frames - all going well (funding being the issue here) I would get the block sprayed in Feb next year, allow a few months for that to take effect and for some breakdown of existing vegetation would mean the earliest planting would start would be May next year and through the winter. It would be good to plant a variety of other natives to help attract birds etc but I'm sure we'll work that out at the time.
Some time between now and then I'll invite you all out here for a look and we can crash through some of the block and also go through the old railway tunnel under the road at the top of round hill (good day to bring kids)

BOTB you need to read back a couple of pages.

OK everyone - how about a lunchtime BBQ here this coming Easter Sunday. Bring good walking footware and we;ll bushbash through some of that tree block and also through the old railway tunnel that goes under the road at the top of Round hill (bring torch).
Feel free to come in a car if appropriate and BOTB and others with kids bring them and we'll set up an easter egg treasure hunt round the section. I;ll have my 2 boys with me so I won't be riding anywhere other than trailbikes round the farm for a few days.
There is plenty of space here including a handy hut with a bunk and beds so if anyone wants to chuck in their sleeping bag so you don't have to ride home thats fine.
Would be handy maybe to have another car or 4WD anyway - I can put the extra seats up in the pajero and take 7 - if we're going to do a tiki tour round the farm.
We'll sort food etc over the next day or so - main thing - who can come???
Either post here or PM me
cheers B
PS if it stays warm for a couple of days we should start seeing a decent number of field mushrooms which are quite nice done on the BBQ - theres the odd one around at the moment but not enough to go out to pick for a feed, but with the rain yesterday and some warmth they could take off.

Just happened to spy a wild pig across the boundary fence if you just happen to have some armed offenders type weaponry that needs a bit of testing????!!! (accurate at about 200m would be good)

Has a really good water rating (twice the recommended for NZ conditions at 3000mm ) and the awing or storage loft... and should pack down to be carried on the bike (somehow ) I may need help putting up for the first time... tho... hmmm :D

WTF has that got to do with this thread D????? - what do you intend to get? I got mine at Rebel sports at a half price clearance - it wasn't half price the day I was there but I asked and what do you know..... yes they could do it for that that day. Makes you wonder what the margins are on these things.

Late afternoon today I went down with my boys to cut a track down through the jungle to the railway tunnel - weapon of choice for them?? - 2 machetes, why didn't that surprise me - plus me with a chainsaw and a long handle slasher and we now have a trail to the tunnel.
Would be a good idea to bring tramping type boots or sturdy walking shoes, and probably don't wear your best cream coloured casuals!!!! - just in case. Its not too bad but there is a small chance you could slip and land on your ......
Weather should be good tomorrow - great for those riding up.
If anyone gets this in time please bring a nutcracker - I want to crack a decent pile of hazels to do on the BBQ and I've only got the one cracker (unless we go to the 2 rocks method!!)
See ya'll tomorrow

Rumour has it that Ruralmans nuts are tax free and he has a lot advance orders and expressions of interest from all round the country!

Security is tight down on the farm so keep a tight grip on your own nuts or at least declare them before you enter the premises.

Just a caring thought for your welfare. :innocent: Enjoy your visit, Cheers John.

Hi everyone,

Sorry, it looks like Mutley and I are out of today's get-together. We've got a family emergency (daughter admitted to hospital). We need to stay in town today.

Bugger - we were looking forward to this. Catch you all next time.

Just had a look at the pic's you posted and the ride report NH.
Looks like you all had a great time. Good company, great weather, and a good ride, life doesn't get much better. Wish we could have been there.

Update on daughter. She had an operation 3 weeks ago and has picked up a wound infection. She is in hospital for another night as they give her antibiotics to clear the infection. This might sound a bit over the top but she has multiple allergies, one being an allergy to penicillin and its derivatives. This is the type of antibiotic she needs to fight the infection. So they need to keep her in to make sure she isn't going to have an adverse reaction.
Hopefully they will let her out tomorrow.

NH's website temporarily out of action so I'll have a look later to see what he's said and look at the pics.
We missed you K & L and hope your daughter is well on the way to recovery - those other complications will make it complicated.
Not sure what happened to Silverfern and her hubby - thought they were coming too.
We could have coped with a few more blokes - this man alone palace was taken over by a group of very capable women - got ordered around in my own kitchen!!!!!
Had a fair bit of leftover food and some desserts which didn't get used at lunchtime so most of the group stayed for tea as well, but they're all away now including Botb with a couple of very tired kids.
We'll do it again sometime so hopefully those who couldn't make it today can get here then - maybe next time it will be more of a bike day with a few local loops. Not all are going to the rallies this month but it would be good to organize a group ride down to the Catlins area - Kaka Point for lunch or something maybe in early May?
Cheers B

Sorry I missed the party! I checked with the son that was most likely to be coming and he wasn't so I was just about to leave when another son rang and said he was coming.
Looks like you all enjoyed the day.
Hope the young lady has a quick recovery.

We sure hope she’s back to 100% in no time. I have to duck in to the hospital myself tomorrow, one of my workmates was washing his truck the Saturday before last when his darned ticker decided to fly to bits on him, and so I want to check up on him.

Hope your workmate is on the mend Smokeyging. Not alot happening in Dn public as most of the staff are on holiday. Daughter desparate to go home. Good sign she is on the mend. However they are keeping her another day as they are trying a different painkiller on her. Antibiotics seem to be working.

Today is another glorious day in the south:sunny: and as per usual Virago and I are working on replacing rotten weather boards on the house, so we can get the house painted before winter.

Both of us stop periodically and look wistfully off into the distance, thinking how nice it would be, to be on the bikes and leaving all our cares behind. Well got to go as the hubby is nagging at me. See ya'll later.

we have a caravan at waitangi that we go to most holidays and will be up there at easter so if i see ya i will say hi, cant be to many old codgers riding triumph tigers around them parts

Hey there jimjim, I went for a ride around to Waitangi late on Friday afternoon thinking maybe you might see me going bye but there must have been too many other old codgers riding around over there and I got lost in the crowd!

Saw a couple of other friends over there but it would have been a bit fruitless asking if they knew jimjim from KB and Dunedin! :weird:

I have been down that track before and the authorities have only just agreed to let me stop taking the pills.

It was bloody cold on Friday night but the little ride was worth it, sorry I missed you! :spudwave:

The rest of the weekend weather was pretty good though aye. :sunny: Cheers John.

WE ended up having another impromptu get together today - I took my boys in to Dn to look at and then bought a TTR250 that was advertised on Trademe (good light trail bike for around the farm and on the organised off road rides we do). Had a few bits and pieces to take back to Dn that had got left behind here and stashed my trailer at G's place. While there NH and WHN turned up and then Delphinus - we ended up all going to see that Black sheep movie - quite bizarre, quite funny, quite gross and I'm glad I didn't take my daughter (she's too young to get in anyway).
Enjoy the Middlemarch rally those of you who are going and I look forward to the next get together.
