Heres the view out my kitchen window at the moment - pleased we didn't try to have the dinner this weekend. More snow forecast tonight and then it looks like it is going to clear up and freeze solid for a few days.
On my way in to Mosgiel last night I drove through a real blizzard with big heavy wet snow flakes - and there was a motorbike heading South through it. The headlight looked very much like a Transalp too - don't think it was me!!
The only weekend thats a definite out for the dinner for me is the 13-15th July.

Righto nothing seems to suit everyone, so we're just going to have to make a date and stick to it. If some people cant make this time, we'll just have another one soon :)
Vote all dates that you can make it.

You have 5 days to vote, then whichever date has the most votes we'll make it then.

Looks like about 3 days of high winds but warmer temps coming up this week - if its fine and calm over the weekend there could well be a bit of ice free riding to be had. Still got to watch for grit but thats not as bad as that invisible slippery stuff.

There sure is a big thaw on around the Waitaki Valley area at the moment.
It feels like we have just gone over the hump of winter, here's hoping from a bike riding perspective anyway.
Must be getting old, this is the first time I have let the winter get the better of me, bike-wise. (didn't even have a day ride to the Brass!)
Went for a nice wee ride down to Waimate yesterday to watch the kids and grand-kids battling it out on the motor-cross track, bloody good day out.
Bike went like a (rocket?) Tiger, behaved just the way a big blue pussy should.
Hope to go to Dunedin next Tuesday for a meeting, so I hope your weather down there is going to be nice to me.
Might see some of you about down there :sunny: Cheers John.

...left the scoot at home today, for the fifth time this winter.
Last winter I took the cage to work a total of six times. So far this winter I have already more than doubled that number. Black ice yesterday, and probably could have taken it today. It was only -5.5 , so quite rideable, when I left home this morning, and as it turned out, the road was relatively clear of ice.

23rd July 2007, 22:28
The other day I went for a wee ride around Lake Aviemore down to Kurow and there was quite a lot of black ice around, especially just West of the old Waitaki village.
While riding through there picking my line through the ice, a prick in a Falcon nearly ran me off the road.
That is the biggest danger in the ice, bloody cages etc, taking you out from behind.
In between me riding through there and coming back a local farmer (of long standing) lost it with a horse float on, the float jackknifed and tipped upside down, broke away from the truck and skidded 40meters down the road.
The horse was still in it and was OK! (Well, sort of.)
Lucky he was taking it pretty easy or it could have been real messy.
They got the horse out, tipped the float onto it's wheels, coupled it up, loaded the horse and headed back home to Otematata.
Two minutes after they left the scene a big truck and trailer unit got into difficulties in there too, just as well the float was not there then!
Funny thing was the float was one I built for the farmer about twenty years ago, happily it did not suffer too much damage.
The horse just walked straight back on, no problem, trusting aren't they!
I rode back through there about an hour later and wondered what all the scratching was on the road.
As I said, watch out from behind when tracking your way through ice on the road. Bastards! :nono: Cheers John.

Weather looks pretty good for a couple of days and that wind isn't as bad as it sounded like being - I've got a wee job on Friday that might have to be done on 2 wheels.
I've only got one of the boys home for the weekend - think I might tie him on the back and go for a quiet Sunday ride - anyone else interested in coming out this way? Provided the weathers OK of course.

Sunday isn't looking too bad now - maybe a little rain overnight or early morning, then clearing for most of the day before closing in at the end of the day and wet on Monday. I've only got my eldest Son home this weekend and promised him a ride up to Lawrence for an icecream tomorrow if its fine (which it will be). Probably go after lunch.

K and I went for a short ride yesterday. I needed to get more town riding practice in. Made a right pillock of myself as I stalled the bike and fell off turning right from Princes street and into Melville Street. A few bruises, a grazed knee and wounded pride were all I sustained. Could have been worse as I fell into the right hand lane of the traffic going the other way. Thankfully no traffic in site. A nice family stopped to help me and make sure I was alright. Keep stalling the bike at each give way going up the hill and I couldn't wait to get back to where we store the bikes. K had no idea I had binned it. He thought I was taking so long because of the traffic.
Every time I almost got to him, he pulled away, so couldn't tell him what happened until we got the bikes stowed.
I knew I needed practice but didn't realise how rusty I was. Thank goodness nobody else got hurt.

Sorry to hear about your drop there Mutley!
Just curious what gear you were wearing to sustain those injuries?
Remember to give your bike plenty of gas when doing a hill start.. Very very hard to wheelstand a bike like that so dont worry about that. And just get the feel for your clutch. Start on not steep hills and work up. Its just a practise thing. That street is not the nicest to practise on!

Or maybe Mr K should just look in his mirrors and keep an eye on you:nono::nono:
Glad you're not too hurt and what D says about those hill starts is spot on. I know one of my boys had a lot of trouble getting used to just gradually letting the clutch go - he'd tend to just drop it which is OK on easy going but impossible facing uphill and especially in a lot of the places we take dirt bikes. A couple of things which helped (apart from lots of coaching and practise) was to adjust the clutch cable and lever so you have good control of it. You'll only have shortish fingers and if the clutch only starts to "take" when the lever is well out then you will lose some degree of finesse/control and have a much greater risk of stalling it - get it adjusted to suit your hands, it will make a big difference.

...That street is not the nicest to practise on!
Unfortunately she was just wearing normal pants - no overpants  We're still trying to find good riding pants that will fit her - it's a bit of a problem. This was the last straw - I'm taking her to Auckland to get some custom-made.:o
Yes, I was mean taking her up Melville Street - but she did say she wanted hill-start practice...
...meybe you should get a mentor
:innocent:
Or maybe Mr K should just look in his mirrors and keep an eye on you:nono::nono:...
That's right, make me feel worse...
I was just around the corner, wondering whether or not to go back and look for her. I thought she was just stuck in traffic.
She then struggled on each hill-start up Melville - it turned out she had bent the foot-brake lever when she dropped the bike, and it was at an odd angle, stuffing up her hill-starts.
I was none the wiser until we got back to our workshop in Kaikorai Valley.
The controlled take-off is the only thing she struggles with, and I'm not sure what to do to help her. She generally gives it plenty of gas - often too much. The problem then arises when she has to turn as she takes off, and she end up more of an unguided missile...
She hasn't got it easy. Until a year ago, she had never ridden a motorcycle, and didn't even know where the clutch / throttle / brakes were. After driving cars for over 25 years...
Anyway, practice, practice, practice...

Another thing to practise (on less sloped streets) is finding the sweet spot where the bike can hold itself on the incline with just enough engine power and no brake.
Give it a bit of throttle so its about 2-3krpm (depends on motor) and then slowly let the clutch out till it grabs. You should be able to then ease off the rear brake adjusting throttle and clutch till the bike is stationary on the hill with no brakes. then give it a bit more throttle and let the clutch out a bit more till you more forward.
Nice and slowly, takes some practise. And start on not very slopy roads and work your way up.
The above sounds tricky but its just practise.

Hi guys,
I see that young Mr Delphinus will be celebrating his twenty-first birthday next week. I reckon that would be a perfect reason for another get-together, to mark his "coming of age" (is there such a thing these days???).
How about meeting up for a pub meal? If we can combine it with a weekend ride, even better (blurdy weather permitting of course).
Venue - open to suggestions - perhaps Waihola?
Date - again open to suggestion (and popular vote) - but perhaps within two or three weeks?
I'm aware that Delphinus may not be riding at that stage - perhaps we can hire a mobility scooter for him?:dodge:
If everyone is keen, we can start a new thread to organise it.

We are in... any weekend other than the 11th, 12th in Alex or something.

I went for a ride down to Dunedin yesterday, the only bikes I saw down there were in the motorcycle showrooms!
Hello,.....cooee,..............is there anybody there?
Passed two riders heading North, on the way down, nothing at all, on the way back.
Some of the back roads were still closed and made the ride, well, interesting in places!
Really enjoyed the ride down and back and yes, the Tiger ran like a charm, shit I like that bike more every time I ride it!
It's starting to loosen up a little now and I have to keep asking myself, "what bloody gearbox!" :ride: It's like an automatic! Cheers John.

Well you sign in for a fee and collect your 1st playing card. Then visit a few Hostelrys collecting the rest of your hand. Food is supplied on the route at selected stops and at the final stop back at The Southern Hotel, the winners will already know that they have one hell of a hand that might win the big prize.
The party goes on into the night. Last year I didnt get home till 4am. Thats BAD

Anyway I thought I'd just bring our Dn thread back to the front page again - those poker runs do sound like fun but they also sound like theres a lot more time spent socializing at pubs than riding???? There is another one coming up I saw advertised (in the BRONZ mag?) that starts in Beaumont and ends up at Frankton so that one has a bit more riding involved - anyone doing it or done it?

Went for a test drive today on a rebel, down at the ice skating carpark, (was also to help me get more confidence - which really worked)
Guess what NH made me do? Practice hill starts, in the rain!! I suppose it will get me ready for the infamous Melville st
The way I am going it might be purchase by committee.
Gave up on the rebel as didn't really like the riding position, and my hands/wrists really started getting sore.
Virago
17th August 2007, 17:25
Best thing to do is sit on as many bikes as you can, and make your own decision about what suits you.
The Rebel is a reasonable learners bike, semi-cruiser style, and is very low to the ground. Performance is mediocre.
Give Mutley or myself a yell if you want to try out her Virago. Sunday is supposed to be a good day...:scooter:
The sore wrist problem may be a symptom of the low-speed practice work, Mutley had the same problem when she started out. You'll adjust to it fairly quickly.
I'm thinking of doing some "bike-sitting" myself tomorrow morning. Thought I'd try the Suzuki Boulevard C90T for size...

There's quite a few differences between the Custom and Classic, it'll be interesting to compare them in the flesh.
I had a sit on a VN1600 Meanstreak - nice bike but I don't like the flat drag-bars it had - felt like I was folded in the middle, reaching forward for the bars.
No, didn't get to try a C90T for size, M&V don't have any left, and are not getting any more in for a month or two (waiting for the K8 models).

Nighthawk and I went for a ride out to Aramoana, was really freaky (for both me and Nighthawk) . His Firestorm was not enjoying the slow speed riding!
Started feeling a little bit confident after Port Chalmers with little traffic, and had a smile on my face when we got home. Sore hands though which will pass - hopefully.

Good stuff! Poor old NH, eh, having to go slow...
The sore hands will go - ride little and often and you'll be hardened to it in no time.
Only down point is got RJays pants in Dames size XL and Nighthawk had to pull them off me because they were too small so I'm a bit depressed from that, but will look at something else tomorrow
Unfortunately some of us struggle with the pants. I've got a pair of RJays Stout Pants (yeah, come on guys, bring on the "stout" jokes...). :o
Try on a few different brands tomorrow - I'm sure you'll get the right fit!

No need to fell depressed: As long as we can keep Nighthawk out of the way, there are plenty of KBers who will volunteer to help pull your pants off. :innocent:
Oh, and congratulations on your new bike. I look forward to seeing it at the PP.

Went for a quick ride out to the Taeri Plains with NH.
I felt more confident on the motorway as I didn't feel like I was holding people up with the two lanes, and got up to 90km on the way out.
Went on a back straight behind Outram and got to 110 km. It was to get me used to going the speed limit. (My L plate must have disapeared...)
It felt SOOOOOOO fast compared to the same speed in a cage.
I kind of went the speed limit coming back. Rush hour Friday probably wasn't the best timing on our part but at least it isn't Auckland or somewhere. I did keep up with traffic and my only issue was the car going at a stupid speed so I couldn't get past the truck doing 90 for a while. And the car STUCK in my blind spot for ages. Sometimes shadows are good.
Perfect conditions for it today. If I had my new pants (which should arrive this week) I could have gone for lots longer. Then again when I got off the bike at home, I'm not to sure. I could still walk though, so thats a bonus. NH says I was smiling, but I told I am still too new at this to be smiling yet.
Thanks for the support all you lovely KBers have given me too, it has helped with my confidence.
Enough babble. Hopefully another ride (or two) tomorrow and I might see some of you at the PP.

Went for my first solo outing. Had intended to just be driving around town, left, right, straight ahead, where does this road go... and somehow ended up in Brighton. Wandered my way back into town and by various means ended up on Taeri road, thought that I know someone up here and went off to Virago and Muttleys. Got the street right but couldn't remember the number. Continued wandering around town and ended up safely home.
Went off for coffee and shopping and when I got home again, I went to put the bike away out the back and ended up laying it down. Finally got it lifted and put away and then got NightHawk to check it out. All OK but the battery is still playing up so I will get it looked at on Monday.
Thats about it for todays ride report. Hope everyone else had fun in the good weather.

Good idea NH - I was also thinking we need a decent "big day ride" as well as some newbie ones. The one I'm thinking of is basically what Dangerous and Rashika did from Scumdogs place to the Pissed Penguin.
Basically Dunedin-Balclutha-Clinton-Mataura-Wyndham-Fortrose-Tokanui- Diversion out to Curio Bay to look at the petrified forest - then back through the catlins - Owaka- Balclutha and home.
Probably about a 300-350km round trip from Dunedin - ALL SEAL - for those in doubt.
It would need to be a nice day - sometime in October or early November. Theres a lot of really nice riding in this trip - but if you want to tottle at sub legal speeds then its probably not a trip for you unless you want to do it with a group of like minded riders. I know Delphinus is keen (should have his trumpy back early next week) - if theres others keen and it only suits to do it in the weekend then post something, otherwise we might do it some nice week day.

Since the Sporty hasn't sold (yet) CB wants to use it (has her full bike licence - had it for longer than some of you have been around) but has not had that much experience with it so a few shorter confidence-building rides appeal to her.

Although I have been to Cromwell on my own (approx 230 kms) I am not very fast, so shorter rides at this stage suit me better. The more stopping, starting and hill starts the better.
