OK guys, theres a whole lot of newer KB members ,and a few who have been on here for quite a while, who are living either in or reasonably close to Dunedin.
Its about time we had a couple of low key social rides/get togethers, preferably before the March Hare so that we can maybe do a group ride up there if theres a few going.
From behind the scenes talk it sounds like we've got some members who would prefer a ride during school hours, and others who can't make that and would prefer either after work or weekends - so it looks like at least 2 rides and hopefully a few will be able to go on both (dirty job but someone has to do it!!)
For the weekday, school hours, ride how about Thurs 22nd March?? Who's a starter (we can sort out venues and trip later)
For the twilight or weekend ride how about something the weekend of the 17-18th - hit me with some suggested times and days and how far you want to go - I'll chuck in a suggestion; how about Latte's in Lawrence on either Sat or Sun morning

I'll probably be in, and perhaps Mrs V as well. Work should be quieter by next month (famous last words), so we should be able to fit in with either weekday or weekend rides.

i'll be in for the weekend rides, my weeks are a bit too cluttered.

Good one ruralman:yes: Lawrence sounds like a good starter. Weekends are easy and weekdays ok with time to organise. So I could hopefully do both. A combined ride to the march hare good too. :scooter: Lets hope the weather stays with us:sunny:

Speaking of the March Hare... group ride up would be kewl... hopefully 5 or 6 of us... Free2B, XKnuts, Phaedrus, Ruralman (If he can make it) Me and hopefully another friend. Meet somewhere in Dunedin ride to Oamaru meet 98tls then off to meet the north crew from Christchurch and then off to the site :-) (Pretty sure Scumdog said he can't make it to this one)
Now organising that is more difficult that it looks... looks good on paper.

I meant the 17-18th Feb - not March - for the weekend ride, and maybe 22nd Feb for the mid-week ride. How does that look.
OK lets say Sat the 17th Feb for a run to Lawrence - leave Dunedin 9am - I'll ride down to Milton and meet you there outside the Shell garage at 9:45 and then we head up to Lawrence for coffee and a natter.
If the weather looks shite then we consider moving back to Sunday.
I'm going to be away all next week on the Passes ride so you guys will have to sort the fine tuning and I'll catch up on Friday when I get home.
On that subject - the Passes ride leaves Dunedin on Sunday morning - we meet outside McIver and Veitch at 8:15am and leave at 8:30 (we've got about 700km to do so we won't be leaving any later than we have to). Are there any other riders keen to join us for the ride up towards Oamaru?? We don't start heading for the gravel tracks till after Oamaru so it won't matter what sort of bike you're on. Forecast looks OK for Sunday but it might be a bit early for some - who's interested? Would be great to see you so just turn up and don't be shy.

I posted the group riding DVD to Free2B today so whoever wants it next PM her.
Any other takers for this Sunday morning joining our Passes riders for a while??
Found another interesting sealed sideroad to include on a future local ride - turn off to Goodwood just South of Palmerston. The turn off is at the south end of that long passing lane about 5km South from palmerston. The road apparently heads out to the coast to a nature reserve done up by one of the penguin trusts and then carries on and comes out by the garage in Palmerston.
Shall we make that the weekday ride on the 22nd Feb? - also include the other coastal roads on the way (probably about an hour each way without stops)

Ah yes, service, hmmm, must take my bike in for one at some stage, it's got modern stuff like indamacators and 'lectronic 'gnition and tubeless tyres.
All of which may need a tune-up or de-fragged or reset or greased or something.
And that means a ride to Dunners, a 'Dunedin Ride' I s'pose?
Ruralman
8th February 2007, 07:26
I've only done a little over 10,000km in the last 9 months but I guess next weeks Passes ride and a few other trips will get me up to close to 15,000km for the year. Then of course theres all the dirt bike trips but I don't have a trip meter on that bike and anyway hours in the saddle matter more than km's when you're off road.
Anyway lets not get too off topic here guys - at least not before we get the first of these Dunedin rides under our belt!

Hey I'm not a dairy farmer - us sheep and beef (plus a few other things) farmers aren't into the 5am start brigade ya know!!!
I hope it is still a morning run as I'd like to go through to Dunnas in the afternoon to watch some kids sport. No problem if the coffee in Lawrence is getting awfully close to lunch time though.

Well I have one that you can see, so old Rider & mrs O/R are welcome if they come home via Dunners!!!
As I said Southern Tavern 9.00am for 9.30 departure. Ok!!!
Thank you very much for the kind thoughts and offer but we are intending to be at the start venue, on time, on Saturday morning, come what may!
Sorted: Mr and Mrs O/R will be, all being equal, meeting the Pass Riders as they pass through Otematata on Thursday and will accompany them through Dansey Pass to Naseby where we will join them for the last nights celebrations.
We hope then on Friday to travel on through Ranfurly to the Old Dunstan Trail and on to Dunedin, stay over and pick up the ride to Lawrence on Saturday morning.
We will probably come home from Lawrence via the other half of the Dunstan trail and the Thompson saddle road and the Lindis Pass. Or go back over to Wanaka to our Son's place for a night, then home via Lindis Pass, who knows, who cares!
Decisions, decisions, so much to do, so little time! All good fun so we will just drift loose and let it happen! :ride: Cheers John.

Hi guys - In Naesby now at the end of the Passes ride - what an absolute blast. The arse is a bit sore (anyone know a good massage therapist???) and I could do with a bit more sleep. Home tomorrow and hopefully an early night.
After 5 days of 10-11 hours riding I might just skip on a big riding day on Sat and as I said i need to get back to Dunedin to catch up with some kids - but I will do the Latte's in Lawrence run on Sat and see you in Milton for the ride.
Great so many Dn riders could join us for the start of our Passes ride and to meet some new faces - Free2B, you need an adventure bike. Catch you on Sat.

What a great day for a ride. we all met at lawrence and had a coffee and toastie pies etc, darned yummy. if i new they would be that good i would have brought more. then we split up and some of us went down to 'scumdogs' place for a coffee. thanks for that scumdog, great to meet you.
one blunder we did for the day was when we left lawrence we got 10 mins down the road before it dawned on us we had no tailend charley, [BOTB] nighthawknz and i went back to try and find her but seen nothing. eventually we found out she was in milton. after scumdogs we went over to BOTBs place and guess what, she must have been in a huff with us for she would'nt answer the door. we hope you are ok there BOTB.

I have got an old rain coat somewhere, I didn't do massage with it, I used it to "impress" little old ladies and young mothers with children too young to understand!
Actually the police might still have it and I am sure the stains could be removed by a competent dry cleaning company.

Hi Anthony, Mrs O/r and I have just been riding the Dunstan trail and Lake Onslow connecting road from Millers Flat etc.
Could see where you have been, there was Teddy Poos everywhere you look.
We had a fantastic ride, met up with a lot of Kiwi bikers at Naseby and Dunedin, joined some of them on their ride for a while then went on our own way.
Shit hot weather, clear sky but a bit windy at times the country side is a bit like out the back of Otematata but not as rough or steep as it is here.
The roads were in excellent condition too, so must have struck things just right. Cheers John.

We do look after each other. Everybody back tracked to look for Botb who had turned round and headed down the main road. Yes she took a tumble and has a knee brace due to a little broken bone. She rode all the way home after meeting up with coldcomfort in Milton who had gone on ahead of us thru Balclutha - we werent riding very fast. All met up again at scumdogs where I got a text a txt from him to say where she was and was ok. We called in see her on the way home but no one there. We were all concerned for her and I hope it hasnt put her off ridin and she will be back with a smile. :sunny:

Yeah if you had of waited a bit longer were back tracking to see where you were and would have help, either doubled you back to your friends in Lawernce and or something like that... however all turn out as good as could be in the end, no major damage... though a broken bone is damage it does repair itself over time.
As for the corners there was a lot of grip on the the road and corners, and will admitt I had couple of hairy mc-clairy momentswhen I though frack it thats in my apex...
The main thing now is learn from this experience and hopefully work out if it was breaks jamming or rider error or just hitting the grit and the wrong time at wrong place in your corner... and the front giving away from under you... when that happens theres not alot you can do... usually its prey the front will grip the road again, and just ride it out.
A common mistake on gravel or with grit on the road is slamming on all anchors (especially road bikes with wider road tyres)... it can appear as your front is locked and you are still going forward and not really slowing, a front wheel skid. Having the front locked up is not the best  You have more control with the rear break and a rear skid than you will with the front... Just remember though your rear break is only 20% of your stopping power...

If theres a few of us keen to do it then we go prepared but we'll start it up on the main Hare thread next week (or maybe start a new thread?) and make sure we all back it up to help get others involved. If you think its a dum idea then tell me and I'll put it out of its misery!!!!

I ended up buying this thing at a mystery auction - turned out to be a really neat chiller bag that holds a bottle of wine and glasses (or about 4-6 beer cans) and has room for a few bits of cheese etc. If I can sneak in a chiller pad, or chill down the bottle (or cans) then it should keep pretty cool from Friday afternoon to some time on Sat. A chilly bin in the car would be a great idea though - is BOTb leaving at the same time as us??
NH if you need ideas of what to get just go to the deli in the supermarket or the international section - don't look for possum testicles though, apparently someone is already bringing them:sunny:

Went for a sort of Dunedin ride today.
CB and I Went to Roxburgh via Milton and then Manuka Gorge & Lawrencs with a group of Dunners HOG members to their Chapter meeting at Roxburgh,
Great ride, good company, first ride like that I've been on and all the others seemed pretty cruisy, no egos, no 'racers' and not at all stand-offish.
But still like my KB mates.:grouphug:

Hey are there any Dunedin riders interested in coming back via the Dansey's Pass???? It is quite spectacular if you've never been through there but of course theres a lot of gravel Kms.
When you get out the other side though there is the ride from the turnoff to Middlemarch through to Hyde which I rate as the best bit of sealed bike riding in Otago - and able to be enjoyed on any bike as the corners are long and sweeping and without bumps and hollows on the way round - even low cruisers will love it.

On our way home form the Hare we did a small diversion I've looked at a few times but never ridden. The north end comes out at the Shell Garage at Palmerston and the other end comes out at the end of the long passing lanes about 8-10km out of Palmerston.
The route is all sealed and has some really nice corners, lots of quite tight corners, the road is wider than the Trotters Gorge road by a little bit, a little bumpy in places but Free2B had no trouble on her cruiser, just a matter of adjusting the speed. An enjoyable ride at a modest speed - allow for meeting stock being moved on the road - there weren't any when we went through but there were "signs" on the road that they had been there not long before we were there.
So I would recommend it if you are on a day ride up there. There is a side road about halfway round that goes down to a reserve that has been developed and maintained by one of the Penguin Trusts - this is a gravel road and one I'm going to have an explore of another time. I didn't notice how far the sign said it was down to the reserve.
This would make a nice social ride from Dunedin - maybe another picnic????

Thats about what I got from the forecast last night - Sat will have more showers but Sunday clearing to overcast, S Westers which will be cool and possibly gusty but only a few scattered showers.
As it has turned out I won't be able to go on Sunday now, so have a good ride and I'll look forward to the after match reports.
Looking ahead theres a BRONZ Easter egg charity run from Carey's bay pub, via Logan Park to the Octagon on Sat 31st March. Starting at Careys Bay at 1:30 and then 2:30 at Logan Park before the big group convoy into the Octagon. This would be a good local event to do as a group and then maybe something socially afterwards. I'll be going, especially after doing their Xmas toy run which was great to be part of. I was definitely there - met Mr and Mrs Viagra, oops sorry thats Virago, there and went through with ScumD and CB and a couple of other bikes from Milton. It was a great event to be part of.
As we were heading up into the Octagon, probably 250 metres behind the front bikes, there were still bikes coming round the corner of Dundas St - all 2 abreast (is a bloke allowed to use that word???, do I have to have man breasts??) and with all the side streets blocked off so there were no stops at intersections and no cars or anything breaking the line. Lots of gobsmacked locals and tourists on the footpath wondering what the heck was going on and lots of cameras and cell phones taking pictures of it all.
I do pity the cage drivers caught at some of the intersections though - they would have had a loooong wait
Someone I talked to at BRONZ reckoned the Easter egg run is usually a bigger turnout than the toy run so it should be a beauty- just hope the weather behaves. Theres a school fair on at Columba that day starting at 11:30 and I need to make an appearance at that so that my daughter keeps talking to me, but I'll get out to Careys Bay before 1:30. You want to meet up out there or somewhere else and ride out together as well??
Quite a few bikes had kids on the back on the toy run so its a good chance to give a youngun a look at the positive side of biker culture.

Well, it's steady rain and no sign of a break in the near future here at Chez Scumdog - plus there are quite strong gusts of wind.
Unless the situation changes real soon I would question the sense in riding down here.
In fact I would say "don't bother" - unless you're a masochist, if you DO there will be hot coffee @ Chez Scumdog.

Well, weather or no weather, the Upper Waitaki Kiwibiker branch had a full turnout of "both" members (me and Mrs O/r) for an overnight ride to Wanaka and back. (Sat/Sun)
We stopped at Tarras on the way over and chatted to a fellow biker over the teacups, only to discover and introduce ourselves to non other than, KB'r "Paulj" of Bannockburn and his partner in life and bikes. (He was on his bike, she was driving a cage but we forgive her that indiscretion!!)
Today dawned with more snow on the tops overnight and a cool but delightful return ride home over the Lindis followed.
Had a slight tussle with a Holden V8 over who was king of the road for a little while, he thinks he won but it was my kidney machine on the back that decided the outcome. (ouch) :spanking: I waved him on! Damn it, the Tiger is just starting to free-up a little too !!
We managed to dodge the frequent cold squalls that were whipping through the hills with little or no warning that they were coming through.
The ride was all too short and I was still thirsty for more when we unloading the bike in the shed at home.
There were quite a few bikes on the road today, as usual all of them were going the opposite way to us, do you think it is the soap we use? :o Cheers John.

Mandeville event called off at last minute, dang! Free2b and I plus Bill and Linette (Potential Ulysians who decided to accompany us) about to enter Southern Motorway when pulled over my a mate in a cage to tell us the news that is called off. My mate had seen plenty of bikers heading south already who hadn't heard the news.
Espresso at Starfish anyway which wiled away the worst of the weather. Heading home, with weather improving I just kept on going, to Tairoa Heads and back. Round trip of 50 miles.

I thought it was a "made in america" styling custom by Craig Vetter. The poms would never have tried to do something different, why waste all those old parts still on the shelves, just bore it out again. They will buy it type of thinking that killed them.

Weather had its atrocious moments out here, but there were surprisingly good sunny spells in between - provided you were out of that godamn wind!
ANy word whether that british day will be rescheduled or is it cancelled for the year?

It was actually BSA America's secret project (1969), and Craig Vetter would only get paid $US10,000 if it went into production. BSA crashed but Triumph picked up the pieces in 1973, luckily for Craig.

BSA America Staff did not like "Rocket 3" styling so decided to try their own. Craig was only 19 years old when he designed the X75, look at his site www.craigvetter.com and follow the Hurricane prompts. Very interesting. Also the designer & manufacturer of the "Windjammer" fairings on early Goldwings etc
You make sure you turn those potential Ulysians into KB'rs.
We will try! Yhe Ulysees event was a no show! Bill & Linette ride a BMW 650 off road thingy??? Another custard square although slightly overcooked. He he!

Anyone got any ideas for a ride on Monday's public holiday ? - I have no idea of the weather forecast at the moment, or even whether I'll be able to get away, but I thought I'd start the discussion.
If its a fine calm day then maybe to Middlemarch, home via McRae's and Dunback.
If its a bit windy then how about up to Palmerston via all the coastal roads, including the route out past the Goodwood reserve (Another KB picnic at reserve? - that would have about 5 km of gravel which might scare off a few riders?)
What about South for coffee at Kaka Point and then maybe a bit of a cruise around the Catlins - everyone been out to the Nugget Point Lighthouse?
If time/distance is an issue then I guess a cruise down the Peninsula?? Theres a few side roads I'd like to explore down there sometime.
Whaddaya reckon.??
