Although I have been to Cromwell on my own (approx 230 kms) I am not very fast, so shorter rides at this stage suit me better. The more stopping, starting and hill starts the better.
:woohoo:Mutley
I am not very fast either lol. Went for a bit of a ride this afternoon leaving NH at work. Went out Tomahawk, up Center Rd, down Highcliff. Then just puttered around Sth Dn.

NH is off to the little river rally this weekend, si I thought I would ride some of the way up with him on Friday, and then on Saturday I was thinking of Middlemarch / Dunback / Palmerston or something like that. Of course if CB is off, could do a southern loop...

I am toying with the idea - something every serious rider should aim to achieve some time I reckon - but will it be this year? Anyone else thinking of doing it?

Yes it always clashes with that - and I think last year it was the BRONZ Xmas toy run on that Saturday as well (apparently a few come back from the rally, do the toy run and then ride back for the Sat night)
Do you reckon you could cope with 1600km in 24 hrs on the VTR ??

I recokon I could comfortably do it... and the VTR is running sweet at present too new rubber, just had a service :D
1600 Km's / 24hrs average = average speed required (with no sleep and or fuel) 66 kph At a 100kph then 16hrs + fuel and a couples hours for kip and rest.. :) well thats the theory... doing it is another story...
As for the toy run, if it clashes again this year I will most likey come back down on the saturday a do that as well and go back to the site on Sat err then back to Dunners on Sun and then... oh wait thats it till the KB rally...

Not really, it clashed last year but it was the first Bert Munro. :spanking:
The Mad Magpie was there first, so the Berty Germ clashes with the already established Mad Bird.
Kick Berty Germ into touch :Pokey: and let them find their own date.

Went with NH on his way to Akaroa. I only went to Oamaru and back, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did. Except for the road works I probably averaged about 90 km on the open road and according to the GPS my top speed was 108. (shhh) My only issues were the car that decided it wanted to imitate hemorrhoid cream and that I am a tiny bit achy.
Lots of bikes on the road and a great day for a ride.
Anyone keen on a bit of a ride tomorrow?

Went for a ride today with Phaedrus and Mutley. Round the block - Middlemarch for a coffee, Kyeburn corner, Palmerston for petrol )as Mutley really needed a top up), Waikouaiti to top ourselves up with more coffee and food then back to Dunedin and more coffee and chatting.
After Middlemarch it was blowing a gale - it had been gusty from about Clarks, but Mutley and I were being blown all over the place.
Things to check off my compulsive little list: riding in wind, riding in the dark (well that is only half ticked as it was getting dark as I got home) & pretty much keeping up with traffic - not all the time, but quite often. Not keeping up with Mutley though - She is a speedy demon.
Big thanks to Phaedrus for being our tail end charlie and coping with my erratic speeds.
490km in 34 hours. I don't know how these thousand miler people do it. Time for a nice hot cocoa and sleep for me I think.

Well done on the ride guys, :Punk:did a bit this weekend myself … Ill raise your 490 to 850... Met the bike trans truck at 8.30am Saturday and swopped the zuki for a shiny blue VN900. Left Dunnos round 9 and was in Hawea 3 hrs later. The wind from Clyde thru to Makarora was pretty amazing never seen Lake Dunstan looking so dirty, but so much easier on a heavier bike it hardly moved at all just had to make sure I hung on. Quick coffee and gas and off to Haast to catch up with the rest of the BSA bunch (thanx for waitin in Hawea Al company for the last leg was good). A bit of rain thru Makarora and besides that dry all the way. Not so thru the night tho was glad to be indoors and not tenting as the weather did its worst! Next morning dawned better tho a light rain to Makarora (sum awesome waterfalls along the way) for coffee, and then dry all the way to Dunos again after a BBQ stop in Hawea. All up a great ride, one of my favourites, with a real friendly bunch of biker guys and girls. Really happy with the bike sorting some luggage carryin stuff is a priority tho. Bring on the big rides!! :scooter::scooter::scooter::headbang:

Okay, the KB Birthday Bash is only 10 days away. Who's doing what?
There was talk earlier about a "small diversion" via the West Coast - is anyone doing it? Mutley and I won't be up for that, but we were discussing the idea of a trip "up the middle" if the weather was okay. We were considering the possibility of overnighting in Cromwell on the Friday, and then heading north via the Lindis Pass and the Mackenzie Country on Saturday. Far nicer roads and better scenery than the east coast (if this bloody weather improves...).
Accommodation in Ch-ch, we were thinking of booking a motel somewhere reasonably close to the venue. We could see if we can get a bigger unit if anyone is looking for accommodation.

Any preferences for a route? I can't quite make my mind up especially when the weather is so uncertain. It's supposed to rain inland but looking at the satellite images I'm thinking the rain may hold off somewhat and it may not be as bad as the met service thinks. Overcast in most of Otago I'd say and more scattered cloud in north otago and south canterbury -> more :sunny: hopefully. A coastal trip maybe, via the less travelled roads for the scenery, avoiding blind ppl in cages and corners for those who like crooked paths to travel:shifty:.....

For what its worth its still blowing its nuts out down here and theres a few bigger clouds approaching as well. If it were me starting from Dunedin I'd hug the coast, Mt Cargill etc, and do the Goodwood Valley (all seal) into Palmerston, and then decide how much further etc.
Its too windy for tailing here as well which is a bugger when you have the slave labour home for the weekend!!

Was a great ride on Sunday, 4 Biker Angels (Kemet, Xaria, Free2B and moi) and 4 Biker jokers (Nighthawk, Cold Comfort, Delphinus, Phaedrus) and some joker on an RF900! Shame about the wind but Moeraki is always great for a drink, in the sunshine. Must get bar weights as my hands were "humming' from the vibrations when i got home. Carbs need looked at and a warrant too before I can hit the road again. Thanks guys for a great afternoon.

yeah was a good we ride... we left late as Xaria just finished work. Got home I had all her gear ready, and bike oiled and ready... pacing say hurry up... wanna go for a ride :D
My guess we were 15 - 20 minutes behind as we were going up the NEV it was 13:40. We went up and over Mt Cargill. Was going to go the old coast road but decide to make some time and catch them at Palmerston, so went straight up Hwy 1 and pulled up maybe a minute or so after the others had arrived... normal chat and we were off again up through trotters gorge and then into Moeraki for coffee that didn't appen as the tavern only instant... Had few drinks of coke instead...
Then back through trotters and back to Palmerston for a regroup... then down Hw1 but nobody turned off to the coast road. But me Tim and Paula went back over MtCargill and back to our place for coffee...
Free2b by this time had released she had left her wallet in Moeraki... so she was off again...

Sorry Jim, we don't seem to be much help for those bits.
I'm home with Callum and still extracting dust out of every orifice (what is the plural of orifice???) after doing the Lake to the Sea trail ride starting at Waihola this morning.
There were over 800 riders this year!!! I know there are more road bikes out there but the number of off road bikes seems to have grown even more. Next week is the Danseys Pass ride and apparently organizers are trying to cap it at 1500 riders!! (over 4 large courses)
Best thing about this local ride is that it is organized by the Toko High School PTA - its one big day a year, which will raise close to $30K this year, which saves them having to do any other fundraising so no annoying raffles etc
It is a pretty good ride with optional routes to suit all riders but the sections on the forestry roads and a couple of farm tracks were incredibly dusty.
While there are a lot of new expensive machines theres also quite a lot of old dungers which do these rides - so if you want some more fun and refine some new riding skills then get an unregistered dirt bike and try out one of these rides

Aahhh, that answers my question. Mutley and I had a job to do in Alexandra yesterday morning, and the huge number of trailers with trail bikes on the road was stunning! Now we know...
We spent the weekend in Cromwell, enjoying the great weather - unfortunately we were of course in the work cage... Every bike I saw was greeted with a jealous muttering...
We passed a lovely blue cruiser at "The Big Fruit" at Cromwell on Saturday afternnon, and as I muttered "bastard" under my breath, Mutley said "That's Free2B...!" We followed her into the mall carpark and joined her for a coffee.

we use to make our own cable inners at the local bike shop in Napier years ago... as my XJ didn't have the standard cable as the handle bars were changed and everything needed to be longer...
Any engineer workshop would be able to make the brackets you are after... or someone that can weild and heat and bend the brackets to fit etc...

One of the best things about Dunedin is that in every direction there is a good ride. North: The loops out Palmerston etc, East: the Peninsula, South: Southern scenic route, West: Middlemarch and central otago. Really different roads / weather / traffic in each direction too.

OK guys the weather forecast looks like an absolute beauty for Sat so who is available and keen for a decent afternoons ride??
What I want to do is the Catlins loop but with an option for learners and those on smaller bikes.
The full loop is from Balclutha down to Mataura then out to the coast and back up through the Catlins.
The alternative route for the others is from Balclutha down via Owaka to Papatowai and back and meeting up with the riders doing the full loop somewhere down there.
It is ALL sealed in case anyone was wondering, the roads and scenery are just fantastic. I was down there earlier in the week in the car and spent most of the time wishing I was riding the bike.
Unfortunately Sat morning is out for me - going up to the Waipori Power station centennial (?) celebrations, but the afternoon is free. How about we meet outside one of the cafe's on Balclutha's main street at 1:30 and go from there. The whole trip shouldn't be any more than 3-3.5 hrs riding plus stops, so given the warm sunny day it will be we'll have plenty of time

It was a great days riding and a great day to be out there - Sunday would have been nice too but I couldn't. Good idea about the BBQ - the lambs here have a bit of growing to do yet as we lamb a bit later than those on the lower country but a Dec/Jan BBQ would work

I'll be there, should be quite a few from OMCC riding there. I may even have to ride the bike down on Saturday morning if I can't find someone with a trailer. Doing the Teretonga sprints and the Wyndham Street race. Did the Oreti beach race 28?? years ago when Burt Munroe was there (His bike wouldn't start)- don't want to do it this time. CAREFULLY hook-up a jumper lead from the + on the battery and where the + lead hooks up to the starter motor and see if it improves things - I never thought to ask but does the motor spin over o.k. when you hit the starter button?

Then check both the big fat leads to make sure they're doing what they're meant to, make sure theyr'e not loose, not broken - and the attaching bolts are making good contact - and that the eiring in the starter-motor is o.k.

"Toy Run Saturday 1 December 2007
We are please to host the 24th annual Toy Run on 1 December 2007. Due to last minute advice from the DCC about road closures we have had to change the gathering point from Logan Park High School to the Dental School at Gt King St.
We are still meeting at Carey’s Bay from 1.30 – the Carey’s Bay Hotel will offer riders free non-alcoholic drinks. We will leave Carey’s Bay at around 2.00pm and riders will be make their way to the Dental School gathering point. From here we will pick up our police escort and we will leave for the Octagon at about 2.45pm. At the Octagon we will donate the toys to the Dunedin North Lions on behalf of all the riders. After the formalities are over please feel free to join us for a BBQ at the St Kilda Tavern – the team at the St Kilda will also have free non-alcoholic drinks."
