I'm pretty sure they were the same from 1990 onwards so if they have one in that period should be the same as my 93. A couple of pics attached if you can see through the mud :pinch:. They haven't got as many vulnerable bits as the DRZ but still a good idea to have a good skidplate and the one I got off you before was top class.

Now that's quite nice. What sort of price for the DR650 one?

Hi gpcustom
Do I know you?
Bill said he sold a few DR650's recently. Are you going to enter the OMCC clubmans series? You have a perfect bike for it. First event is an easy one - a road trial next friday 13th.
See you around, mine is the blue one with the motard wheels.
Gary B
Edit: Just read back and now realise you made the bashplate not bought the white bike like I originally thought, sorry, as you were!

Seperate switch and relay/fuse straight to the battery.

Yep, I know what you mean Aslan; I was grinning from ear to ear when I finished Odlins Rd today on my DR - so much fun. Havin proper offroad tyres(D606's) on it has made so much difference and given me so much more confidence I can get thru challenging sections offroad on it!

Tip if you don't already know. To avoid pinching the tube put air in it before putting the second bead on.

I carry a little bottle of washin up liquid with a bit of water in it - little trick soeone showed me when I did my first tyre change - seemed helpful!
A liberal squirting around the bead seemed to lube it well.

+1 on the CRC. Always used soapy water but had to use the CRC one day. Much better than the soapy water. Just dont be too liberal with it.

I was told to avoid oil products like CRC as it is real effective getting the tyre on but fuses the tyre to the rim making it real difficult to break the bead to get back off. Have seen a heap of frantic tyre changing done recently due to roadracing in the wet at Teretong and the biggest hassle seems to be breaking the bead. About to go up in tyre sizes on my DR to the max I think will fit. a 120/60-17 front and 160/60-17 rear. Will need to carve a bit off the chainguard though.

The bonus is that it holds the bead riding the 40km home with a flat rear...
I use DRC bead cream. Basically a foam pad with water impregnated soap in a handy container.

Thanks for this info as it is a benefit as I see it. I'd rather have trouble breaking the bead every so often than finding out (via a flat tyre) that they tyre has spun on the rim when riding with low pressures off road. I can see how this might be a pain for somebody who doesnt ever lower tyre pressures though.

Yes I guess that would actually be a benefit on an adventure bike most times. Due to seeing tyre problems on my first major Adventure ride recently I will be going in with a few others and share taking spare HEAVY DUTY tubes, tyre irons and a pump between us. Some tube just aren't repairable. I wonder if bead cream would make the tyre more likely to move on the rim after inflating? Used it for the first time last weekend helping someone change tyres and it certainly did assist getting the trye on.
NordieBoy
18th June 2009, 11:59
I've gone off heavy duty tubes.
The only flats I've had were puncture type and a nail is going through regardless.
I keep above 18psi and don't ride fast in the rough stuff (or smooth stuff) so pinch flat prevention with the HD tubes isn't an issue.
The HD tubes have just been a bugger to carry with the extra weight and bulk.

And HD tubes dont seem to hold air as well as thiner tubes either. The only spare tube I carry is a 19inch transvestite tube i.e. it goes either end!! Replaced ASAP though obviously.

I have been asked about what I have done to my DR650 for racing. Its all pretty simple really.
The wheels are off a GSX250. The rear required machining some of the metal off the sprocket carrier and a new sprocket drilled, and some spacers made. The front just spacers and machine down the original disk as it was 300mm and needed to fit the standard caliper 290mm disk. I
got an engineer to do this as I am not capable of that sort of stuff. Wheels cost $700 all up with sprockes and disks plus crap tyres.
Sliders on the axles, bar ends and on the rear peg mounts, this is a requirement for racing at kart tracks and is to prevent track damage more than bike damage. I got plactic offcuts from a factory for $30 enough to do about 3 bikes worth. Tethered kill switch for street races($12 from a boatshop). Wire up anything that has oil.
Rip the top off the airbox, put a bigger flow exhaust and a dyno jet kit in. Rout the breather into the airbox and the carb overflow into a bottle. The carb overflow is the only thing that actually spits out anything and it is origanally routed directly in line with your rear wheel. You can go oversize to even the dynojet kit jets if you run without and air filter as I do - not recommended for anywhere else though. Get decent tyres, I love the
Dunlop GPRa10's as they slide without dumping you on your ass. Have had good run with a 110/60-17 front and 150/60-17 rear. Have just fitted a 120/60-17 front and 160/60-17 but haven't run them on the track yet so can't reccommend them yet.
If you want to WIN forget all the above and buy a KTM, Honda CRF or Husquavana for twice the price and expect to spend over 5 to 10 times the ammount in maintainance.
So far I have done 40 speed events and probably over 30,000 km and have not done anything mechanical to the bike except for jetting, exhaust, 3 sets brake pads, 4 sets tyres and oil etc.
Done so far since march 2007
1 Mini TT
2 Gravel Sprints
2 Gravel Hill Climbs
11 Motard meets at the Kart track.(includes 2 trips to A&E)
2 Road Hill Climbs
2 1/4 Mile Sprints
1 Road Bent Sprint
9 Roadrace meetings Teretonga
2 Street Race meetings Wyndham
6 Roadrace meetings at Levels
2 Roadrace meetings at Ruapuna
22 events planned between now and new year already!
6 Motards
1 Gravel Hill
1 Gravel Sprint
5 Teretonga Events
1 Wyndham Street
4 Levels Events
1 Greymouth Street
1 1/4 Mile Sprint
1 Road Hillclimb

Cool. You want to get sorted as there is heaps of events and SMCC talking about a proper motard track being developed. If you can get to Teretonga by the 12th July the Dunners guys will be there and the southland crew are friendly too. I started off with standard bike on standard rims and a 21inch front wheel before slowly getting the bits sorted. If you want to get stuck in straight away and you have trouble getting a 21in front tyre I can lend you one for a few meetings.

screen came off a vtr 250 i think... some thing like that, came from bucket, n, bits. bike wreckers. lower hutt.
i think it has made a small differance, it sends bug up to my helmet now.
i took the white sticker off the light cover, and painted the top black, i also painted the suzuki on the screen, air brush. enamal pant
the tank was a big blank space, so i added the adv and dakar to it first.
then added the palm tress later.
i made printed drawings, carefully cut out what i wanted and then used my air brush and enamal paint, and a good thinck layer of armour oil, to help protect it.
even the water blaster wont wash it off,,, cool.
i know its a bit tacky, but i lkie it....

I don't think the seats much better than the 400. Feels a lot heavier too. Doesn't vibrate half as much though, and certainly pulls better from low revs. Less gear changing. I'll have to get it on some gravel and try it out.

OK, serious question. Should a DR650 blow out a set of front brake pads in 7400km. Perhaps the standard pads are soft, or the first owner loved the front brake lever. On the DRZ I wore out the back ones in 10k, but the front are still fine. DR650 is heavier though.
Thoughts anyone

Got 6600k on mine and they're gettin low on the front, and more worn than the rears, but not THAT worn yet! i reckon I'll get close to 9000 on my fronts.
I was under the impression on bikes the front brakes provide more of the braking on the road and thus would wear faster than the rear so presume on the DRZ you wore the rears faster cos you use the rear brake so much offroad in controlled slides(!) etc and you probably stay off the front brakes offroad!

turns out i hand smashed the bottom part of rear guard, and have lost about 100mm of plastic, so trimmed up and a bit of brace work,, its a bob tail now...
still one big crack runs up past the top reflector.
so i wont go down that track again...

Gidday rok-the-boat,
I've asked a similar question on here and other forums. Didn't get a definitive answer (or any answer for that matter) because nobody has done it before or thought about it. I have a '85 Dr600 and would like to fit a newer engine but have no idea if it would work. I think it would be possible but not practical due to costs of the engine etc...So I'm still looking for another engine or will have to flogg it off so I can get a Dr650.
PS. I've heard that a Honda engine will fit ?XR500.

The one in my '01 was really restrictive and mad a noticeable difference when done. The one from the '97 is at the "if I have the header off sometime and a carbide bur handy but no hurry" stage - about half the restriction.

Never had a DR but had a few other Suzuki's and going by those this is normal. Prime isn't meant to be 'off', it allows a free flow of fuel to the carbs.
Not all Suzuki carbs are Off, Reserve and On.

It has a vacuum operated petcock. No vacuum i.e. engine not running equals no fuel flow. Just leave it on either on or reserve if you want to take the tank off. You will have to disconnect two hoses from the petcock.
Prime allows fuel to flow when there is no vacuum. Probably about the same as reserve on a "normal" bike. Basically you use Prime if you have drained the carbie to fill it up rather than having to crank the bike for some time to fill the carbie before it starts.

Had a wee off on Sunday. Two days of racing the DR was a bit busy. Saturday Road racing at Levels Round 3 and Sunday at Dunedin at the Gravel Hill Climb and Gravel Bent sprint. Was pathetically slow on gravel. Coming into a tight changing camber left corner at about 60k's the rear only slightly out the front started to wash out. I did what I thought I was supposed to and apply more power. It didn't fix the front wash out but did slide out the back so at least I low sided rather than high side. Not a lot of damage, smashed indicator(I rode to the race) and bent my crash bung. It dropped on the left but the bike was protected coz it fell mostly on my left leg. My right boot must have kicked the starter button as it went over and broke it off, the switch that is not the leg. SO the pathetic little block with the kill switch and start button (which can't be bought independantly) is worth $208!!! I kid you not. So I went down to Jaycars and bought a button switch for $5.90 and will solder it in tonight.

The switch I got from Jaycarr is tiny, looks waterproof and I can drill it into the existing block and the existing wires will reach it. But yeah - a kill switch would do the same job. The main thing is weather proofing i guess as some cheap switches look like they would last about one rainy day. And who knows, one day i may even use the DR for its intended purpose and go adventure riding where there are rivers and such!

Only bother about the footpeg blocks if you intend racing at a Kart track like Silverstream. I keep grinding the footpeg blocks off at Levels so would probably leave then till you hit the Kart tracks. They aren't for bike protection but to protect the track. I would pit sliders/crashbungs about 90mm long mounted where the pillion pegs bolt in, as they actually do protect the bike and maybe another shorter one wher the left rear indicator goes. Thats the place I usually have one but smashed the indicator instead on Sunday.:angry2: See how long it lasts all glued back together, recommend UHU glue for plastic.

Couple of pics from Round 3 King of Levels on Saturday. Racing with slicks makes a huge difference to lap times, I dropped nearly a full 4 seconds since changing. I get the old DR around at 1:19.673 which I am pretty chuffed with. Check out some of the sportsbike times and you can see why I am happy. And a pic from the gravel hill climb and bent sprint on Sunday. I had already binned by the time the photo was taken on Sunday which slowed me down a lot. Mark's KTM on the left, Hayden's KTM on the right and Scotts CRF usually sits where my bike is, but he blew 5th gear so I got to use his tyre warmers. Thats me facing camers with a big grin. What a difference to confidence hot tyres makes. 12th on the grid and about 5th into the first corner - and down to about 11th again by the end of the straight - god I hate straights. Noticed somone said peg sliders don't do much to protect the bike , I've found that they hold the bike further off the ground limmiting dammage , have photographic evidence on/off my 450 , and noticed a lot more room for my leg on the 650 after the road rotated suddenly . They don't go on my thou though as road bike pegs fold a lot further so don't offer the same protection .

I was noting today that the foot pegs on my DR are a little high to be comfortable.
Anybody know if you can get a kit to lower the pegs (and the gear and brake lever)?
It would also lower the center of gravity. :-)
Does anybody hold their foot "at the ready" over the brake? I always have to move my foot forward to hit the brake. Which is a bit hairy when I'm standing up on the pegs going over rough terrain and then get the urge to brake...

I had a look at and a ride on this today: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=248674487
I was very tempted to get it instead of the XR600. It's had lots spent on it, Scottoiler, gel seat, screen and top box (not shown in pics) lots of good engine mods and it's painted black and lowered for a shorter rider (just lower seat and dropped suspension by the looks but could easily be lifted up again) and only done 3800km - never taken offroad - a unique and mint DR.
I've got the XR back on TM here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=251020313
I've got more long trips coming up for work and decided I just have to get a road bike (nearly bought a mint Bandit 600 today but just missed out). The DR would be more suitable than the XR but still a compromise. Hopefully when the business starts going ahead a bit more I'll be able to get another adv bike as well as the road bike.

Yes, thought so, lowered etc...I emailed them, havent even has a reply?
It is relisted, I emailed them again, still no reply?
How are these guys going to be during the negotiation process if they don't answer mail?
Couple of questions....why painted when so new?
I see black paint on rear spring? I think....home job?
I know it is shorter, we can see it, yes....

Seller's name's Jake - I emailed and got no reply so just phoned him and went straight round and had a look - just doesn't read email I guess. He's a good guy, just doing a project bike so selling the DR.
The previous owner apparently was an old guy with lots of bikes and a bit eccentric so spent lots on it but didn't ride it much. Jake painted it because he didn't like the yellow look (know what he means ) just to personalise it a bit. Also painted the rims. Just likes working on bikes I think.
Apparently it can be taken back to original with thinners :gob:- all the stickers are underneath. It goes mint and sounds good with the RMZ450 pipe. He has all the original stuff - pipes etc plus some dual purpose tyres. If I was looking for more of a dirt-style adv bike I would have grabbed it but decided it was too similar to the XR (light and single) for what I'm wanting to do.

A lot of those 2007 & 2008's have been there a long time. I think people are keeping their hands in their pockets.
I've had 4 offers to trade on my DRZ, but no one's fronted up with the cash. Oh well........it's not a big hardship having 2 bikes in the shed with summer coming up. Mrs Bart's new outdoor area is just going to have to wait (we were going to build a deck with the money from the sale):whocares:

Yeah that's about how the sale of my car is going - lots of timewasting tyre kickers!
We'll see what happens when the bike goes on TM this weekend! If I wanted a DR650 as an adv bike and for $7k could have a 2009 with 14 months warranty left or a 2007 with no warranty at pretty much the same price, I know which one I would have!
I know the people who want a shiny commuter bike in mint condition they can just polish up in their shed every damn weekend and never see any gravel or dirt might not want mine as it certainly has a few character marks from being used as it was intended to be, but as an adv bike its a screamin deal at $7k for an '09 I think!

What should I ask for my 2006 DR650.
Its got 25-30,000ks. Reasonable order. Couple paint chips, a bend in oil cooler where it got wrapped around a KLX450 and seem mechanicaly sound. Yes it has been raced but due to dropping spark at a mere 7800rpm has not been thrashed enginewise. Only been on one adventure ride so has not sucked up heaps of dust or been through rivers.
3 sets of tyres, knoblies, adventure and road to fit standard rims.
Will probably sell the motard wheels seperately after or with the bike. It takes 25 mins to change from road to track wheels.
I am considering the sale because I bought the bike for adventure riding but havent realy got into it but am getting keen on racing so will look for a more race oriented bike.

Thats a hard one Gazbur theres quite a few 650s on the market at the moment between 4.5k-7k, but they all pretty standard DRs maybe you could go with the motard look to make it stand out and not just be another DR650, city goers might find it a little more appealing, or as an entry level motard racer but less the exspence of a KTM etc. just a thought

why the move to a more road oriented bike Dave...
Comfort on long trips, a desire to do more adv touring and see NZ, can't afford two bikes at present & doing longer distance trips on seal & gravel more desirable than thrashing up a vicious single track I've been up several times before.
Will get a more "dirty" bike to join the stable in the future when I can afford to own two bikes!
At the end of the day, whether I get a Transalp or a WeeStrom or something else similar, it will still handle some offroad, but be way more comfortable on longer trips! A twin should be less vibey too!

Yup... bit more than 8k for a tiger, there's people more qualified to comment on them than me, Hell, I've never riden one but thought they would be the shiz for adv touring, which has more appeal to me than fangin round some forestry tracks.
I know the Trophy is a nice bike to ride long distance with plenty of power through out the range, but thats thanks to the previous owner.

Yep! Just been researchin specs on those two bikes. Altho I originally felt I would go the wee route, am now sartin to think the T/A makes more sense for me.
The Wee has more horses and bigger tank, but a sucky 19" front, & shitty ground clearance even before adding a bashplate, and is a long, heavy bastard.
By giving up a little bit of power and tank capacity i could have a T/A and it still be great for adv tourin BUT be bit more useful if i wanna go off the seal & gravel and hit some not too vicious tracks! T/A looks like it has some expensive fairing I could smash off tho! :gob:

holy grunt machine, took for quick spin to parents place and back,
so much more off throttle grunt, first gear wheelie ez, even without tuned in, and its really hard to tell weither clutch slip or tyre slip because it happily does both, set clutch at home just now so, think it should be good tomorrow, just need to fold a plate holderrer rerer,
so i just need to tweak a couple things to get rid of slight off idle bog, rubber mount can, fold a plate holder up, and move a couple wires out of sight
oh and i lost my speedo magnet :\!!!, ill use some silver epoxy next time >_<

Hey all. Just brought a 2008 DR650 for $6,000
It's got 7,500km on the clock. All going well will put on a bigger tank, screen & some decent tyres. I hope the price was reasonable?

Hi DR guys
I am thinking of putting the bike on trademe this weekend. What do you think am I being realistic? This is the ad so far.
------------------------------------------
2006 DR650 Motard/Adventure
30000kms approx
WOF till July 2010
Rego till Jan 2010
This bike comes with 2 wheel set ups, Motard and Adventure.$6,900 the lot.
Adventure Bike with 3 sets of tyres. Full Knobs, Gravel tyres, Road tyres to suit the standard wheels.
Motard Bike with Slicks and also Road tyres(Dunlop GPR-a's)or 2 sets GPR-a if you dont want slicks.
All tyres in various states of wear.
Dynojet kit plus the original standard needle and jet.
Speedo shows 16,000km but probably has 10,000 more than that.
Never actually thrashed as these engines drop spark at 7,800 rpm.
Never been through rivers or sucked up much dust as has only done one adventure ride.
Has minor paint chips, a few scuffs on the plastics and a bent oil cooler that still works fine.
Both sets of wheels are fitted with disks and sprockets so it takes about 25 minutes to change from Adventure to motard wheels.
Comes with original handguards, service manual, spare levers, dynojet boxed jets, 2 gearing options. 14/43(fitted) and 15/43(original)
No objections to you getting a professional mechanical check. (Check at your cost, I will deliver to any shop in Dunedin).
Yes this bike has been raced but due to low revving understressed motor is not likely to be any more worn than any Adventure bike.
Will sell the bike seperately as standard Adventure bike for $5,700 and the Motard wheels for $1300 or whatever depending on the
tyres/wheels combo you want.
Please don't ask for just the wheels until the bike is sold as I know how much in demand these wheels are.
Reason for sale - not doing the Adventure riding I expected but heaps more racing than expected. Will consider swaps/trades for competition
bike preferably a motard.

Cool. Will let you know but I am still going to be racing myself. Depends on what I get next and what the buyer wants. If it doesn't sell no big deal as I just have so much fun on this bike. I will be at the Burt Munroe for Teretonga and Wyndham either on the DR or something else.

Pity about the whingy rider though. Just about finished reading the Mondo Enduro book, made those two look a bit like big girl's blouses in comparison. Recommend it as a great adventure read, will look for the DVD now.

Why would you? Unless you want to try and race it in SuperMotard events?:Punk:
Then you may as well save some $$$ and buy an RMZ450 or similar.
Just change the silencer, airbox mods and dynojet if you want to make it run better all round. But then the tanks too small for the new fuel economy!!!
Anyway, next is to upgrade the spongy puddin' suspension...
They are a great bike though, Just get a bashplate for the stupidly exposed under engine:soon:, especially with that stock suspension.

Just askin:shifty: not the lightest rider around, seem well priced secondhand, meaning theres some slack to customize it a tad. Tank, shock, bashplate, muf/jet, just std stuff I'd do if not already on the bike.

lol, thanks...i think! yeah im well happy with the buy, am off for a ride tomorrow with tonyw and xrjohnny, drgirl etc
around the waikaremoana so ill get a good chance to see how these mighty dr's go
i read your comments on gearing nordie and i think ill go for a 520 setup with 14-15 fronts
and 43 rear, the current 525 chain is a bit shot so 'in for a penny, in for a pound' eh?
its currently running standard rear and 14t front and still feels a bit high but ill know more once i get to open it up tomorrow

thanks gizzit, its got a new avon distanza on the rear and a fairly shagged pirrelli scorpian a/t (mt90) up front.
i did a few hundred k's of gravel on them over the weekeknd and found them both good on seal and ok off, but will
fit kenda trakmasters asap (bike came with a spare k760 rear) for better gravel action and the option to hit the steeper dirt bits too
