Advice please - and I have searched the forum first in case anyone's going to open up:ar15:
I'd like to fit an inline fuel filter on my DR (09) but
a) the line runs very close to the head so don't want it melting...
b) the fuel line has a larger bore than the filters I run on the XT & KLX and I don't want to run it lean...
Can anyone advice what they've successfully done and even they're feeling really overly helpful then a pic would be great.
Cheers Bish

You do know that it's got an inline fuel filter already?
I just used one of those triangularly/pyramidy ones.

Thanks - I take it the filter is in the vacuum tap assembly then? If that's the case I'll leave well alone until I put on a plastic tank (my XT Acerbis one still sends through nice bits of swarf and it's 8 years old...)

I'm betting the US pipe is the one on the right, as it's like mine that came from the US... thought the DR was slow until I realised it was an mph speedo :Punk: The US can is pretty loud and pops like a bastard on the overrun... can't find any gaps either. Maybe it's some weird American air injection emission wotsit... or not(most likely)

The filter is in the metal elbow the fuel line goes onto on the carb.

It's a BST Mikuni carb. It's going to pop. Depends on the exhaust as to how much.

Another daft question I'm afraid...
Went hunting for the carb breathers on the DR to tee them off for deep water (like my other bikes) and shock horror it doesn't seem to have any :shit: Assuming that's normal as I don't know anything about this particular carb, I did read on ADVRider (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135295&page=4) that there is a breather with filter that runs near the air box - and yes I did find that one.
The link recommends a filter mod for dusty conditions, so would appreciate feedback if that's what people are running as mine get's lots of dust from regular shingle surfing.

Why am I posting on the DR thread ? you may ask ,
Well I have a little project in mind , we've been flat out since xmas turning a wee bus into a camper / support vehicle and its going to need a trailbike hung on the back of it.
I've thought about various bikes and whittled it down to a DR650 for several reasons , weight being the main one while still having a worthy machine capable of a bit of two uping.
What I want to run by you jokers is ... I've got a broken KTM 400 with some nice WP USD's and shock sitting in the basement and I believe its no biggie to put the forks on a DR , not so sure about the shock .
So is this a good ,bad or ugly idea ??
Oh , and I'm on the lookout for a crashed DR going cheap (anyone want to crash one and sell it to me ?)
NordieBoy

Bung the front end on, but uprate the springs and disc.
Shock.... Probably too much work. Linkage or PDS?

The disc certainly needs to be a bit bigger ... but springs ?? DR is only about 10kg heavier so I would probably just suck it and see .
Shock is linkage (whats a PDS?) might have to bring the shock round and have a measure up against some of your bits .

Run Nordie run! UG wants to measure your bits!!!
There is a thread buy a guy who built a DR650 adventure (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534007) and wrote about it on Advrider. He put on WP48 forks of a 640 Adv which I'm guessing are on the 400 LC4. The first post has all the info you need. Little bit of machining and a spacer on the DR stem, press it into the WP yokes and bob's your uncle. Biggest issue that he mentions that I can see is that the WP forks are 3/4" longer than the DR's forks. Better hope the WP shock is similar.
Cheers R

7th June 2010, 09:28
Thanks for that Ryan ,very informative thread .I was picking that the WP forks would be a bit longer and kind of assuming the shock would have a similar effect . I may have to grow some longer legs as the WP's will only slip about 10mm further up through the tripples .

Hi All
I am trying to remove the grab handles on the DR650 so I can put on a luggage rack.
The rear ones are fine to remove.
The front ones, the ones that are allen key ones, seem to be locked solid. Any advice on getting them out, preferably without stuffing them as I need to reuse them.
I have squirted wd40 on them and will leave them over night and have another crack tomorrow.
Should I try an impact driver?
I don't have any way to heat them (heat gun or blow torch etc), not even sure that would be a good idea anyway.
Maybe I should just whisk the bike to the bike shop and see if they can remove them, as I am going to be buying the givi top box from them most likely. Seems like admitting defeat though :shit:
Cheers in advance :)

any particular reason why not. The guff from the site suggests it is pretty much a straight swap for most bike horns. I figured if a DR could run heated hand grips - which I might consider for next winter - then surely they could handle a better horn than the asthmatic road runner meep meep currently supplied :shifty:

Been a while since I've seen one of these.
Rode 167 kms from fill to reserve today. Put 9.73 litres in and the odometer read 177kms at that point, so 18.1 kms per litre. Running Dynojet needle 4th clip from the top and 160 main jet. Haven't looked at the plug so cannot comment on colour.
I didn't really flog it but wondered if that was a good result or poor. My ZRX1200 does a little worse, but it does get pushed a bit more, legally of course :sweatdrop
My son's DR650 also has the same setup but we haven't looked at consumption yet.

I would say thats ok. With my old one I used to get around that. Got 20km/l once or twice. Most bikes Singles, twins etc all seem to get similar MPG with the exception of Beemers, 650 singles and 800 twins. They get incredible MPG.
Hows yours Nordie with that FCR ?
NordieBoy
15th September 2010, 20:09
About 18.5 with the DJ'd BST and 19.5 with the FCR for the same sort of workout.
I'd expect 21-22 on a longer trip.
Riding solo in the hills is more efficient than around town for me as I'm smoother in the hills without all the stop/starts of day-to-day town running.

Phreaky Phil
15th September 2010, 21:36
From what ive been reading the FCR is meant to be better than the TM40 in that respect. There seems to be some "didling around" to do with the FCR's when fitting them, compared to the TM40 which can be got pre jetted. Either way, a dyno is stil the best way to finalise the jetting. Where did you have yours dynoed ?
NordieBoy
16th September 2010, 07:45
Kientech And Procycle have jet kits for the FCR and mx_rob will give ballpark jetting for your specifics.
1 machined adaptor and changed jetting is all that's required.
The TM40 needs jets, 2 adaptors, cables.
I haven't had it dyno'd with the FCR but get it done at City Motorcycles where Lester is working out how to do a big valve conversion :D

Did you source it locally, via Ebay or straight from the UK? They do look like a good unit, Are they tailored to a bike or just grab one and make it fit?

Hi all, I am looking at placing an order for some ZRX stuff in the US and was thinking about grabbing a couple of the rubber plugs that go over the swing arm bolts. They cost around $US3.00 plus a bit for postage.
Anyone bought any here? Cost?
If I place the order, anyone else want some? Will work out final cost inc postage when I have numbers.
PM me.

We have asked Cheapcycle parts for a quote for the bit plus shipping. We are buying a bit of stuff for the ZRX & FZ1 so thought we'd tag on a few DR bits as well.
I haven't looked locally and often I am surprised, but carb caps for the ZRX are $US20 but are over $NZ75 each here.

One of the best ways to sort it out is make a screen of heavy cardboard and try that, then hack it off until you get it right. In my experience theyre best angled back, not vertical. The more vertical they are the more they tend to cause buffeting. Just look at the Bitching about KTM 990 and other screens an ADV rider. I rckon you just want it high enough to take the wind off your chest while leaving your helmet in clear air

Thanks for the advice Nordie.
2007 done 20,000kms. The bottom screw was just past finger tight and undid without any pressure on the screwdriver, the top one was able to be removed with the clutch in place so that indicates just how soft the tightening was. Now replaced and locktited into place. Took it apart with the clutch in place but too tough getting it back without pulling the clutch out.
A small tip, cover or block the gallery entry point. Not an easy task getting a dropped screw out of the motor when it is on it's side.

Not Baja (or what ever) 1000 level, but no so cheap it isn't going to work LOL
So no help with the answer there - sorry nordie.
Was thinking about the buell mod (twin lights) but think the look of a big round headlight looks retro cool, and since the dr is more of a retro looking bike hehehehe no upgrades since the 80's , the round one is what I am after.
Unless all you wise heads say it just won't work,,,, then I might take the pig headed bastard route and try anyway!!

So how are comfortable are your foot pegs then?
I know that wasn't directed at me, but would I be better served to lower the foot pegs first before bar risers?
NordieBoy
13th October 2010, 08:38
Bar risers really just get the seated bum to bars position correct.
Pegs get the feet to seated bum position correct.
If the planets are in alignment then standing will also be right.
I don't want to raise my bars any as the seated position would be to high then but when I stand I want the pegs to bars to be 3-4cm further apart.
I'm going to have a go on my spare set of peg mounts at modifying them quite drastically (but simply).
In a day or 2 I may have some news.
Either of a good fix or a "don't do this"...

It would but...
It sounds like your peg to bars distance is about right, but your pegs to seat distance is too short, and the seat to bars a bit long so a bit of height on the seat would solve both of those.

XR 250's have 17,17.5,18,18.5,22mm inners depending on the year and the DR needs 21.7mm.

Looks like an XR650 front sprocket will do it.
21.7/25/13 is a match for the splines.
But JT only do 14 and 15 teeth...
I'll add this info to the wiki...
Personally I'd much rather keep the front sprocket at 14t and above just for sprocket and slider longevity.
If you're converting to 520 then a 46t rear and 15 front is the same(ish) as a 13t on the stock rear.
14-15-16/46 and a 112 link 520 chain is the biz.
DON'T DO THIS! IT IS WRONG!

Hmmm...
The pre '96 DR600/650 sprockets are quite skinny on the countershaft mating surface.
The DR Big sprockets are 10mm at the countershaft and the XR650 ones are 13mm.
Stock DR are 10mm.
Those extra XR millimeters would give a bit of peace of mind when using circlips to hold the sprocket on.

I've only started turning mine to off whenever I get off the bike in the last few months.
The seals on the BST were good for the 90,000km it was on the bike.
Now I just forget to turn it back on and with the FCR there's no warning just a very sudden loss of power.

I was referring to the american form of racing (NO CORNERS)
on a supermotrd circuit the klr wouldn't see which way the dr went but maybe on a more open circuit it might be interestingly close.
that would explain the extra weight
hopping from a klr onto a dr feels like the dr must be 50% smaller - much more than 30kg. off road the klr is at a serious disadvantage but on road the klr is such a comfy armchair

Yep - nothing like a wind up, hah hah! If you really wanted to drag off other Adventure bikes you would never choose either a KLR or DR. Now I could rave on about KTM's and the smarmy superior expressions all thier riders seem to have, but I will not lower myself.
Well OK I will lower myself quite a bit then.

drag races! - how boring - how meaningless
the best way to sort out the men from the boys is to have an attempt at Beotch Hill.
if Beotch hill proves too easy then right next door is the significantly nastier Skanky Beotch Hill.
I don't know if I can get my KLR up eiither of these but we could sure as heck have some fun trying.
Both are at the end of the Maungakotukutuku Valley Rd.

Sorry Clint but I won't be there this year to be lapped by your smarmy superior expression. Been there 3 years running but still unable to ride since my smash in the Methvin Street race on the DR 6 month ago. Bike is back and going but I'm not yet. Damn right it's the wimps option :shit: I have to ride my bike 2000km home afterwards  Actually my excuse is that you're not allowed to do a street race unless you have done 3 races on a circuit recently. It was therefore a toss up between the sprint races at Teretonga & the hillclimb, since I've never done a hillclimb race before I decided to give that a go.

Why? The GSXR600 pulls to maybe 15000rpm, so it's logical to assume the muffler can flow enough air to allow this - 0.6 x 15000 = 9000 litres/min give or take. The DR is fractionally bigger at .65 litres, but the revs are way down, maybe 7500 so the DR only requires 4875 (call it 5000) litres/min flow.

But the DR flows in 650 cc pulses not 175cc pulses.
The 01-02 1000 cans are best but the 600 can works ok.
The newer cans are quite a bit longer.
pete376403
29th October 2010, 23:05
Yeahbut, at any sort of revs the 600 would be ridden at, there would be no discernable pulse in the exhaust stream, it would be to all intents a continuous flow (and quite a bit of it), unlike the chuf chut chuf of the dr.
I've done this with my GS1100 (Suzuki not BMW) put a CBR600 muffler on it -it's worked just fine, even up to red line (which is a fast idle for the CBR)

Exactly. The GSXR pulses are smaller and smoother. The DR pulses are once every 4 stroke cycle. Far more effective back-pressure.
The GSXR600 pipe flows like my SuperTrapp IDS with 8 discs. The 1000 pipe flows the same as 10 discs. Thats about a 500rpm shift in "sweet spot" for revs.
The 600 is fine. The 1000 is finer and also lighter (stainless internals vs titanium).
The 600 can is down about 8% power on the 1000 too - I dropped 2hp changing to the 600 from a 10 disc SuperTrapp.
I liked my 600 can and if the mid pipe didn't have any holes in it, it'd still be on the bike.

The mid pipe is 0.5mm thick.
The hole was caused by a mount being under a bit of tension and the vibration just ripped it out.
The split was due to quite a few months of running it with a muffler bandage...
