Hey.....I've got a great idea!
Why don't we have a special KB wave so that we can recognise each other on the road?
Why hasn't this been thought of before?!
It has been mentioned before but never put into practice. Who thinks we should?

I'd to confused with which wave Im suppose to give....

So I just wave or nod to all... I not care  :scooter:

Or you could do what me and Chickadee have done and buy KiwiBiker stickers for the front of your bike so people know without the need for a complicated masonic wave thingumy.
Also by buying official KB products you show your appreciation AND assists in the funding of the website.

It doesn't matter.
I once posted a thread about a HD rider waving back and another HD rider got stuck into me for suggesting that HD riders won't wave back.
a. You can't "win" this argument.
b. It doesn't matter. Enjoy your ride. Don't waste time trying to make other people enjoy theirs.

Hay, sorry about the wave thread, I wont do it again. I am a little slow on the uptake. Just one more question! Eienstein said you could prove or disprove anything with Mathmatics, I think he was wrong!! The mathmatical average of 240 volts AC [sine wave] is Zero! Why does it hurt real bad when you stick your finger in a light socket??

The average is 325(peak) x 0.636=206
RMS(unit used) is Peak x 0.707 = 230+ or - 5% from the supply.
Been yrs since I was tested on this, so other sparkies don't slaughter me if my numbers are not exact.

My ex was a Harley rider, and her explanation for the unfriendliness of Harley riders is that Harleys handle like a wheelbarrow full of dogshit and they're too bloody scared to let go of the bars! Now before you all rush to crucify me, THAT WAS A QUOTE, PEOPLE!

i have a theory with the older BEARS brigade
when riding something like a old bonnie, they vibrate and brake so badly that the riders cannot afford to let go of one of the grips!
harley's are the same, its rare to see a harley rider riding with one hand on his pull backs/ t bone risers/ apehangers....
man, whats the point of a cruiser? (not VMAX or power cruiser)
skidz
7th January 2007, 21:48
Hell, I wave to anything on two wheels. Sometimes when the cruise control is on I'll wave with my right hand just to confuse another rider that thinks another Harley with a sticky throttle.
Ixion
7th January 2007, 21:48
Meh, poppycock. Did a bazillion miles on old Meridan Triumphs, always waved. Woz vibration got to do with it? In fact , on a real vibratory bike (Triumphs weren't actually that bad), y'r hands can't stay on the bars anyway, so you may as wel use them for waving.

True that. I do the surfing type (kawabunga?) hello's to kids at traffic lights eh. They love it.

Depends. If you're walking on a track and pass someone, yup :wavey: . If you're in a mall, then nope. All about frequency.
eg if you're tramping in the wop wop's you stop and have a great big chat.
Same goes with bikers I guess. If everyone rode bikes  , no one would wave :bye: . But when you haven't seen a rider in an hour I give them a air "High Five" (Borat voice). Kidding. But you know what I mean.

I've found in my experience there's no hard and fast rule as to who waves and who doesn't. While on my dualsport I've had waves returned from Harleys, Sprotsbikes, old bangers, gang members, bemmers, and dualsports.
I've also had all of the above fail to wave back.
Personally I don't give a shit it I get a reciprical wave (hell I've been know to wave at a cage towing dirtbikes). It's not the reason I wave.
The reason I wave is because I enjoy it. Being part of the biker community. That's what waving represents (to me at least), why else would we wave to strangers? Because they are our riding brothers and sisters. Irrespective of anything else, we have the two wheels in common (and all that represents - sound familiar KB).

I'll wave to absolutely anyone on a motorbike of any type. I've heard all the "HD riders never wave" talk from KB before, but for me that rule never seems to have applied, some of the friendliest / most enthusiastic waves I get are from HD riders. Used to ride out to see T.W.R a while ago before we both got too busy, and I'd always see Harleys on the road. Most of them would wave, even the patched ones. In fact, the ones that seem to wave the least often are the commuters doing the morning ride to work. One guy I saw riding to work every day coming the other way. I waved at him heaps of times, he never waved back. So I stopped waving at him. He always wore a white helmet so he was easy to see and ignore.
But yeah, other than him I'll wave or nod at anyone on a bike.
Bob
17th January 2007, 07:12
I find if I'm on the ER-6f, then I get nods from the more sporty bikes. But at the weekend I was using Laura's XV535 Virago - I nodded to someone on a sportsbike... and was completely blanked.
I wonder how much of this comes down to our trying one kind of bike, sticking generally to that style and falling into a clique?
. Oddly enough, I wrote an article on this very subject (http://www.bobpickett.co.uk/bkit/outofthebox.htm). Because I've ridden a range of bikes, I'll acknowledge anyone on two wheels.

The biker community is still pretty strong. Sure not everybody on the road waves or nods but that's not a big deal. What's important is that if you're in the shit you'll find there's plenty of help available readily from fellow bikers....

Sigh. Autumn certainly brings out the worst in the repost/revisit posts.
Autumn is just THE best riding season in NZ. The scenery is fantastic, the temperatures are mild, and while it may rain sometimes, it isn't as damp as Spring. Or repost/revisit.

no offence mate, but have a cry. Some people are too busy riding to worry about waving or acknowledging EVERY rider. Some people only wave to similar bikes... i may not wave to all but that is usually because i wouldnt have seen them til too late. I will however always check if there is a problem if someone on a bike is pulled over on the side of the road, assuming it is safe for me to stop.

I almost always wave or nod. Usually nod. Something I learned when I first bought my old bike up to Auckland a couple of years ago. Another rider went past, and he waved as he passed me, something that just rubbed off on me. Whenever I'm out with the club, they all wave as well - cruiser or sport-bike, it doesn't matter, we all wave.

no i'm not worried about it, makes no difference, just commenting on how it seems to have changed, maybe biking has alot more people who have chosen bikes as a cheap form of everyday transport rather than a hobby/passion/obsession. maybe i'm wrong, just making a comment thats all.

Thanks for answering your own question.
Demanding that people wave just because they ride a motorcycle is exactly the same logic that resulted in only white people being allowed into Sun City.
The waving thing comes up with dreary repetitiveness.
"People who don't wave are wankers, therefore people who do wave are cool, so we should have a Kiwibiker wave to identify the REALLY cool bikers" - who are actually geeks because they hang out on a website. Which means by definition they aren't cool, so a special Kiwibiker wave won't be cool.
The common thread has been a desire to compel people to wave because they ride a motorcycle. How is that NOT PC?

A nod's as good as a wink to a blind man, as the old saying goes! If a rider nods at me, he or she gets the same response as they would if they'd waved. I usually wave, but if I am coming around a corner or the other rider was obscured in some way, I will nod as it's faster and easier to do than waving. :spudwave:
Sounds pretty sensible to me! Although sometimes I give a two handed wave out of sheer over-excitement..... just not on corners.

LOL, it's ok mate. Even I started a waving thread when I first joined KB (must find and merge with this one), so you're in good company.

Some of those here with particular need for constant recognition from others would absolutely LOVE Norfolk Island. That place is seriously a waving nirvana. The locals wave at everything and everyone regardless of mode of transport.

Well I'm gutted, guess my life is over.
Just down the highway from me when I left my road I came across a convoy of compressors, Triumphs and a few Buells.
Gave them a wave, well the first ones, nothing back.
Shattered!
Interestingly, they were riding like a huge bunch, all bunched up and real close together. Looked quite dangerous, if one fucked up and bit the dust, it would of been skittle time.
Think it was a local gang and cohorts.
Saw some tough badges on their backs.

Would you want to take a hand off the bars riding like that? Explains the huge pile-up at the Maraekakaho/50 intersection when that biker went wide and got 'clipped' - a couple of months ago.

Thats a relief, now my life can carry on as normal.
Speaking of that pile up, a guy who wrote his Triumph off in that mess, rang me on Tuesday wanting to buy my Triumph!

I wave a lot...I'se a friendly type like that. But I don't know if it's cos I'm a chick (you can easily tell by the blond ponytail sticking out of the helmet), but I don't often get a wave or a nod back even in safe riding conditions. :o kind of makes me feel silly for waving in the first place.
Hubby said that one guy was checking out my back side during a long ride to Taupo though...That's friendly, but does it count?

I think all motorcycles are cool and have ridden a lot of them (all kinds) and enjoyed every minute of it. I allways acknowledge ALL other bikes on the road with either a wave or a nod and take enjoyment in this simple act of brotherhood when others acknowledge in a similar way..It is very noticable (much more so than other M/C types) that those who ride cruisers (harleys or Jappers) rarely even acknowledge other motorcyclists with even a slight nod.. Why is this so..?
It's funny you should say that;
I find that sports bike riders don't wave or nod to me anywhere near as often I do it to them. If I don't wave it's usually coz I'm busy.

I ride an 1800cc cruiser.... But I always nod or wave if it's physically possible at the very moment any biker goes by. Cages with KB stickers and/or those that get out of my way get a wave too.
At the end of the day all road users need each-others cooperation and support to survive the ride/drive. It's nice to be friendly... you reap what you sow.

Yeah, me too.
I realised this morning that I may be responsible for a lot of the bad mojo (crashes, near misses, theft, misbehaving engines, etc.) that befalls other bikers. If I nod/wave (or wave/nod) to another motorbicylcist, and he/she/it doesn't respond, I invariably go, "Well phark you then!!" inside my helmet, and Satan and/or his minions must take me up on this invitation. :shit:

9 cruisers are the worst, they seem (for the majority) to be the weekend cruiser sort who take their bitch out once in a while to look the part.
".
Hey its not that we dont WANT to wave at you sporty types, its just that Cruisers are on 7th heaven once in the saddle and dont even see the road LOL, I also have a question, how do u tell a weekend rider as he is coming towards u at 120kph. hehehe, Seriously though I wave at everyone, dirtbike, Sporter, Harley, anything on two wheels, so much so Im thinking of installing one of those "wavy HANDS on a spring, onto my windsheild...:gob:

I nod to all bikes. But hows this for a odd story. I was driving down a main road and was going through an intersection. There was someone on my left waiting at the lights as I went through. I think they were on one of those Honda 90cc step throughs. Anyway, as I start going through the intersection they guy visciously starts beeping his horn and when I look he waves. So.. I wave back.
I found that very odd :D

Cage drivers wave fists and give the bird to each other,
Truckies flick and indicator to say hi to each other .
In my little short time on two wheels I see we give a little nod of helmet.
Do we have a sign a gesture a secret hand shake, wink, wave or nod??????
and what about us two wheelers when in cages to acknowledge a fellow two wheeler ????

Welcome to KB, and be aware that the topic has been covered in some depth and sets the poster of a new thread about waving, secret KB waves, and nodding vs waving, up for a significant amount of ridicule.

There are many many threads on this topic..... do a quick search and you will be surprised!
Usually, a nod or a wave as you pass another biker is the norm.
Not everyone does it. Dont be offended if you nod/wave and its not returned. They normally are riding a cruiser and/or gang patch on their back!

I only got the Ducati coz I couldn't afford the maintenance on a Hyosung GT650R (or the cost of buying it!).
My personal opinion? Any bike is good so long as it functions and you enjoy it and you feel an affinity with it coz it YOUR bike.
My bike is not quick and neither am I - I am the first to admit it - it was a good move from my last bike (VTR250) as it is about twice the power and twice the torque so something to get used to.
Enjoy.

right ... .back on topic:
3 guys, 1 Irish, 1 English and 1 Scot, are walking along the beach one day and come across a lantern and a Genie pops out of it.
"I give you each one wish, that's three wishes in total", says the Genie.
The Irish guy says, "I am a fisherman, my Dad's a fisherman, his Dad was a fisherman and my son will be one too. I want all the oceans full of fish for all eternity."
So, with a blink of the Genie's eye "AlKaZoom" the oceans were teaming with fish.
The English guy was amazed, so he said, "I want a wall around England, protecting her, so that nothing will get in for all eternity.
Again, with a blink of the Genie's eye "AlkaZoom - POOF" there was a huge wall around England. The Scot asks, "I'm very curious. Please tell me more about this wall."
The Genie explains, "Well, it's about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick, protecting England so that nothing can get in or out."
The Scot says, "Ach, fill it up with water."

It doesn't take much even if your a person riding a scooter or riding a motorbike,
A simple nod of the head or a thumps up.
Its just like a smile, it makes your day feel great and especially for a noob rider like me, makes me feel welcomed on the road. :scooter:
