My missus used to have a VW Beetle years ago and all V Dub drivers used to wave to each other. She told me how she waved at another VW driver as they were going round a roundabout. The other girl waved back, lost control of the car and rolled it.

Everyone ok, no injuries.....I fecking wet myself when I heard that.....

Tried an electraglyde classic today. Short trip Welly/Petone/back courtesy Welly Motorcycles.

Waved to other bikes. Great to see the shock on their 'faces' - wot a harley wave to me!
Have wanted to try a harley for zonks - now i know. Had to walk up to the front of the bike to change gears (well after my VFR)- not that changing was really necessary.

The missus and I have just spent a great couple of days touring along the West Coast. Marvellous roads and great weather bought out a host of motorcycles. Often stopping at lookouts or cafes for coffee we would join or be joined by other riders and conversations would strike up as they do when you meet like minded people that would rather be on a bike than doing anything else.

On the road oncoming bikes would invariably wave or nod as we passed. There were the full range of bikes out in these last few days - sports, tourers, dual purpose, and cruisers. There was even a young fella making very good speed up Lewis Pass yesterday on a GN250 who waved very ethusiastically.

The exception was, of course, the Harley riders. Not one returned a wave the whole trip. At one point I thought one did wave back and that was the exception that proved the rule, but as we passed I saw it was a Boulevard and so the natural order was restored to the universe.

While I would like to be charitable and suggest Harley riders are too busy hanging on to wave, I suspect they are just too up themselves to acknowledge lesser brands. ;)

I was riding in the north island the last two days and same thing. Lots of bikes all shapes and colours and lots of waves. Hell even one or two Harley riders!!! REALLY IT DID HAPPEN

I also noted with pleasure the number of cars that just kept left to allow passing without crossing the centre line - did my thing for motorcycling and gave them an enthusiastic wave and thumbs up everytime! Now my right hand is killing me as I spent most of my travels waving with the left and steering with the right

Dead right. Same thing happens down here. Although, it may be argued that they are the one's riding the 'lesser brand'!
Glad you enjoyed your trip.

This has been done to death, but I have to say I agree, I rode down to palmy from aucks not too long ago, and had a rest break in taupo, down where burger fuel is, and there was about 8 harleys parked up, I thought oh cool proper bike parks and other bikers to chat with etcetcperhaps a little comraderie......anyways I pull up and they're all just fucken glaring at me and my red sports bike, giving me that whole "who the fuck are you to park next to our harleys and ruin our sitting here drinking coffee and lookin mctough and posing".......I could'nt believe it, so I parked right between two of their bikes, just to wreck the whole poser look altogether for them, and said g'day and nodded at a couple and was totally ignored......absolute posers, probably ride in straight lines and slow down to 30 for corners, stop for coffee and a latte and fuck off home..... I think their gear was probably worth more than my bike......It's a shame as I quite like harleys, too bad most (not all) of their owners have some kind of god complex- maybe to go with the whole mid-life crisis thing?

But I don't really give a shit, I get to ride my bike, it spends more time under me than in the garage being polished.

I'm absolutely knackered from putting on ATGATT, dragging the Kaboom out of the shed in this heat, riding 300 metres to the dairy, waving, nodding and farting in the direction of any two wheeled contraption, stopping and consoling the bloody minibike rider I didn't see / wave too, as I was avoiding a B train intent on sharing my lane, buying the milk, attaching it with the approved LTNZ straps to the proper carrier taking care to not disturb the CoG of the bike and in any way cause the tyre pressures to vary by more than 2 psi.....then repeating the whole show to get back home.

God, you wonder why we don't wave????

The Harley-Davidson Motorcycle is the World's Most Traveled Motor Vehicle

In a historic world first, Kay and Peter Forwood’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle has traveled to more countries than any other motor vehicle in the world.

Their Harley-Davidson motorcycle - a 1994 Electra Glide Classic (vehicle number 1HD1DJL14RY502784), has ventured through every internationally recognised country of the world. Many machines have circumnavigated the globe as aeroplanes, boats, cars and motorcycles and a few individual machines have visited more than half the world's countries, but only this Harley-Davidson has been to every internationally recognised country.

The World's Most Traveled Motorcycle has visited over 357 countries, states, territories, isolated parcels, islands, atolls and disputed territories.

The Electra Glide Classic was purchased new in 1994 and it has now been ridden a total of 515,000 km both in Australia and around the world. 490,000 km were recorded outside of Australia on the motorcycles journey across the world.

Kay and Peter’s journey spans some 12 years, beginning in Australia on the 3rd of February 1996 and still continues today. Details of the journey around the world are meticulously recorded at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/forwood/ The Web site profiles their journey with descriptions, images and maps of all 357 countries, states or territories they visited. For the Harley-Davidson enthusiast it is a site that records a unique couple who truly “Live the Dream”.

I rock the left-hand salute type wave most of the time, but sometimes if I'm feeling bad-ass enough I like to change it up a little.

In all seriousness however, with me being only a newbie to the world of biking I have really enjoyed the comradeship between riders that I've experienced so far. It's like someone else out there who shares your joy of having a great ride and understands the dangers and frustrations experienced. I'll even go as far as to pull up next to another biker at the lights, open the lid and say gidday.

An old friend of mine was out on a Sunday ride on his Duc one day when he decided to stop at a cafe for a java. He's a pretty hard-core sort, tough as nails, so he rocks up to some pretty scary-looking harley riders and says "How come you harley riders never wave to other motorcyclists?" One of them replies something along the lines of "We don't wave to Jap bikes" My friend not-so-politely pointed out that there were probably more japanese parts on their bikes than on his.

Harley riders can't wave, they'd spill their latte.
Metric crusier riders sometimes wave if you have chrome. Then retract the wave.
Ducati riders NEVER wave.
Guzzi riders always wave
BMW riders have stopped waving to God because He didn't wave back
BSA riders always wave, though this is a mixed blessing because they shower you with oil when they do.
Two smoker riders probably wave, but who knows what's happening inside that smoke cloud.

Didn't get that memo, but come to think of it recent travels would indicate that could be the issue with some of the Ducati's I saw on the road, I am sure folks here will know the ones, the rider (an pillion if there is one) will have all the Ducati gear similar to Harley riders, I am sure there is possibly Ducati underwear and these are the folks that own it. Funniest thing is these folks will be well annoyed now that Ducati has change it logo.

\ My friend not-so-politely pointed out that there were probably more japanese parts on their bikes than on his.

it was the evolution motor that turned the fortunes of harley davidson around. they were going bust due to the worst build and design issues imaginable
the evolution was designed by japanese engineers on harley's request.
it also used to have tawainese rods, a jap carb etc etc

makes me laugh too

back in the day of shovels and the like you used to have to be a mechanic to keep one running, back then harley riders really were outsiders because you had to be to accept all the issues just to be cool, now any chequebook clown can run one

guzzi riders dont always wave, sometimes it pays to concentrate on hanging on, but we do nod and its not just the legionaires making us do it

I think the sport biker 'non-waver' is also getting up there in number. Followed a bunch of 5 600 riders up to Wellsford, and none of them waved to the oncoming riders. Or waved thanks to the cars that moved left for them.

Maybe it was because they were holding on for dear life, they're cornering being matched only by their overtaking decisions. Which brings me to the harleys. I'm sure they'd wave on the straight sections of road.......

Yeah, I've noted some pretty snobby 600 Riders too lately.

A few days ago I pulled into the new BP in Taumarunui - plenty of bikes around ex Wanganui races, I was in the cage and waited at a distance for a Harley to move off from the pump. After I while, I chose the adjacent pump - he was zero'ing his speedo I think, and as the bike looked brand spankers, was prolly sussing it out.

While pumpin my gas, I watched him fire it up in his sexy half helmet (NOT) and then it happened, he put it into gear and there was the most earth shattering CLUNK I have ever heard. If anything I ride or drive, including the neighbours tractor, ever made a noise like that...................I'd be bloody mortified.

Shit it looked like a $35,000 bike too

So, as you can imagine, there could be more than one acknowledgement required at once.

Harley riders dont wave....Gotta keep up the image.

Guzzi riders dont wave...Shaft torque pulls them into the ditch.

Ducati riders dont wave...messes with the manicure.

Two smokers dont wave...Gotta keep that clutch hand ready for a seizure.

Old Brit riders do wave...Relieves the numb finger vibes.

Jappas wave...coz they can.

Two smoker riders probably wave, but who knows what's happening inside that smoke cloud.
aww..I ride Ducati and I ALWAYS wave (or nod if I'm avoiding an accident) ..to anyone on a bike, even Harleys!
Maybe it's because I used to ride a Guzzi.. bikers are generally nice people, cause most times they wave back :))

ok after the ride today, I have decided waving may not be the best (esp for newbies!) so i just do a head nod. Did it at a few bikes, probably half acknowledged me. Most waved at me afterwards so that means a headwave works! I mean, I ALWAYS look at other bikes on the road so i assume other may do that? sometimes I dont like to take attn off the geak changing or brakin that waving may cause, so i reckon nodding is just as good. I mean, we DO need both hands. Cagers only need 1

I wave to Ducatis, nod to other Italian marques, lift a finger to V twins, raise my left eyebrow to anything else red, raise my right eyebrow to any non-Japper, twitch the left corner of my mouth to anything over 750cc, twitch the right side to anything over 30 years old, tilt my head to the left for crusiers, tilt my head to the right for all others.

So, as you can imagine, there could be more than one acknowledgement required at once.

On the other hand, it's usually easier just not to wave at all...annnnnd there's your real reason!

Must look like you've a bad case of Saint Vitus when you pass a whole gaggle of multi-brands going the other way...talk about Tourettes...

Harley riders don't wave back to me because I'm wearing high-vis, and riding a bagger.

Wave to everybody .... scooters, cyclists, women pushing prams, hot looking chicks ..... people on Harleys .... the lot !!! Use both hands at once, while nodding energetically at the same time ..... Lets start a "bikers are friendly" movement !!! :Punk:

But .... I wave at all people riding motorcycles. We are enjoying the same experience ... whatever the brand or attitude.
It's always a pleasant surprise when a gang member smiles and waves back. And yes some smile ... and it's easy to see that when they are wearing the favoured black imitation German Helmet!

I will never forget the picture of a gang member from USA whom hit a concrete power pole face first while wearing no helmet. He lived but it was not pretty. I rode for some years with open face and visor before fullface helments became norm. From memory a lot of riders resented them because the rumor was they could cause serious injuries if you hit face first. Please dont ask me to explain this logic, it was a long time ago and I couldnt understand the argument then either, though to be very frank, we only wore helmets to keep the cops off our backs and I doubt most of them would have helped in a crash because they were dropped a hundred times, had cracks in them and were hand painted etc etc.

Hi Gizzit - I am born and breed Whangarei stock. Do they still try and beat 'Killer Hill' up Mt Parahaki? My mates and I used to go back the back road , Mt Tiger Road, behind Parahaki and end out Parua Bay and drop into the pub for a pint, many happy memories from the late 1970's.

Anyway back to the point. I have always waved when able and when its practical though the Wellington motorway is quite wide in places so I usually leave my salute usually for those days when I am cruising along on a nice hot windless day on the open road or touring, enjoying the ride and therefore its my way of adknowledging this fact to other riders ..... and also to prove that the cagers havent got me yet.

...yes, coz hitting a hard object like a wall, car, power pole etc is much easier on your face than hitting the inside of a purpose-designed helmet  I don't like the thought of bugs in my teeth or eyes neither!

Yes when I started to ride, it was on dirt bikes, and wore an open face helmet, sometimes with a visor. That was all we had for a while, and when FF helmets came in ..... no one was keen to use them !!??

Im not sure if they still do it, but in the early 70's, I used to run my Yammie RT1B 360 up that hill ... and sometimes not make it! We used to have a ball around those tracks and around the fire roads of Glenbervie Forest ..... Those were the days!!

I find when Im riding my Suzuki I get heaps of waves, nods etc from other non Harley bikes and about half the harley riders.

When Im on my Harley its the reverse most Harley riders wave and about half the non Harley riders.

The wife and I do notice that more motorcyclists will talk with you at a stop if you arent on the HOG. some times if they do you get bailed up and told all Harley riders a posers or never wave etc etc.

It interesting obverving these reactions when all you are doing is having a nice time on your bike.

My take on it all is that if you ride something differant then you just arent on the other persons radar and they often dont even see you. Some people just dont give a damn that you happen to ride a bike and dont feel any special sharing of the moment, and others are focused on a narrow spectrum and your bike just doesnt float their boat.

Live and let live I say.

It depends on the moment. Mostly I'm busy - sometimes a nod will do. Out on the plains - why not.

I had a Suzuki TS185 in 1978 and a mate got up that monster on it. Yes, we all had a ball trail riding around the forestry tracks on hot summer afternoons. I have said a number of times on the site that I believe it taught us good riding skills, or at least learning how to use your bike and engine for maximum effect.

One thing I tend to forget about Northland is the bugs up here. Half the time I was 'waving' I was really just trying to clean my visor of bug splat. Not sure if some of the Southern riders are aware of what a bumblebee does to your visor at road speed and it makes quite an impact on your concentration too.

Not exactly a scientific study but I've noticed less ChCh bikers return a wave / nod when I'm on my Harley than when I'm on my Guzzi, and that BMW or classic bike riders ignore me irrespective of bike.

Don't suppose it matters in the grand scheme of things but it's a shame that many are too up themselves for a simple, easy gesture of comararderie.

79 pages on waving to other motorcyclists? Amazing what trivial things we waste our lives on. Personally I don't feel any comulsion to wave to every motorcyclist I pass. If I'm in the mood I might give a wave/nod, but not necessarily. Funny that people think this is some sort of insight to my character/attitude. For all I know the person on that motorcycle is a rapist of young children. Probably not, but funny how we make judgements based on meaningless gestures.

* Sporty bikes wave at sporty bikes
* Modern Cruisers wave at anything
* Harleys and other forms of primitive machines dont wave to modern jappys as a general rule.
* Classic riders wave like modern cruisers do
* Scooters (EEEK) dont wave to bikes over 50cc or above and Vs Versa, I am not sure if they wave to eachother ? Maybe too hard concerntraiting as they are too worryed about skinning bare hands/knee's etc..

That was my observation :)

Many times I have read on here that BMW riders are wankers who never wave because they are too arrogant or whatever (unlike Harley riders who are just plain scared of taking one hand off the bars) but I'd like to dispute this.

When I had a BMW I always waved (even at gang members, whoops!), and my husband, who has two BMWs, also waves to every bike - and usually before they wave back, not just in response to their wave.

We went for a ride to Carteroni last weekend (a couple who own and restore classic Lancias near Mangaweka) with the local BMWOR. First of all, some of them need a boot up the bum as they never waved once. But we were towards the front of the group for most of the ride and I could count the number of riders who waved back on one hand. So do people not wave at BMW riders because they don't expect them to wave back, or do BMW riders not wave to other riders because they never wave back? Just curious. Must have said "well, fuck you then" about a dozen times that day!

The BMW wave is easy. It's the heel clicking on a bike that's a bitch.

No no - Can't wheelie according to the The Fizzicks of KB - and the intarnet.

BMW owners only wave in summer. They like to keep their pinkies toasty on their heated grips during winter.

MaxB
18th February 2009, 15:54
BMW GS are fairly straightforward to wheelie but its not big or clever.

Now that they are over 90-100 rwhp it has got a lot easier.

The clutch slip, long wheelbase and modest power were more impediments to lofting the front on the older models.

P.S. I wave or nod FWIW

I spent a fantastic Easter weekend in the very sunny Hawkes Bay riding everywhere I went. Heaps of bikers out and about.

Of all the bikers I waved to, there must have been 50+, I only got 2 back! This includes sports bikes and cruisers alike. Bikers are more friendly in Auckland than HB, who would have thought that!

Im HB born and bred myself and im appalled at the lack friendliness exhibited to fellow bikers over the weekend. As soon as I got back over the ranges, all the waves started again. So come on you guys, it aint that hard to nod or wave!

Yes its another bloody waving thread, bash away:bash: :p

Both hands off the bars and a big firm clap above the head.

Riders may be forgiven for not waving if they are mid corner.

One big advantage of this 'wave' is that you'll quickly discover if your wheels are correctly aligned - correct wheel alignment is important, Safer Communities Working Together.
