Do you know much about the xr650L model? Im looking for a new bike/project with aim of preparing it for an african trip in a couple of years. Of what Ive found out about the 650L is that it is heavier due to factory road legal gear, it is geared longer for raod use and has heavier flywheel. The engine is based on the Dominator of the late 80's, same cyclinder, low compression, milder cam than the 600r, so less powerful, but it does have e start (not that I mind kicking a bike).
The xr6oor has legend status with many owners considering it the best dirt bike or do everything bike ever made. Question, do I go for the 650L or 600R that is road legal or has been made road legal in the past. What is the best base bike?
Do you know or anyone else know if the 650L has crappier suspention than the 600R. unfortunately the bike that Im considering is about a 5 hour drive away so makes inspection difficult.

Probably slightly less but more noise so it sounds more powerful.
Most forums I've read say that the 650L is overweight and underpowered and suggest staying away. They look a lot like the XR600r and are aircooled but have E start. Apparently it's the complexity of the E-start and everything that goes with that that adds the weight and turns it into a real Pig. So I would say that the 600r would definitely be a better base bike. I did Whangarei to Napier through Waikaremoana in a day on mine and had a blast, plus took it all around the South Island fully loaded so would be great for the African adventure as long as well prepped. I'd get another one before a 650L for sure. 650L is I think more like a DR650 - fine adventure bike but not really a dirt bike as well like the 600r is.

XR650l is a great bike, the only downer is the carb but slap the 600 carb with the larger jets(1 option) and the power delivery is fantastic, easy to chop weight and that lecky leg can be a saviour in a tight spot.
But yeah the XR6 is better in the dirt.

Hi folks, I'm looking for some sage advice and were told that you guys would be the right bunch to bother ...
I've been hooked again on off roaders, well, dual purpose anyhoo. I'm trying to make my mind up between two models, an '86 XL600R with 50,000 odd and a '91 XR600 with 30,000 odd on it but 3000k ago had a complete engine rebuild, top and bottom.
What I'd love to find out is if there are any major differences between the two models? I know the XR is supposed to be sportier and the XL more of a work horse but what about weight, reliability, parts etc?
The XR attracts me because of the rebuild, I've always wanted one and it's in the south island.
The XL attracts me because I may be able to get it a bit cheaper but it's in the north island so kinda negates that. It also has passenger pegs plus the fitting for a top box which would be good. I'd like to put the wife on the back sometimes and to have somewhere to put our crap so she doesn't have to wear a backpack.
The XR is obviously in better nick, rebuild etc plus there's some surface rust on the XL. The XR may need new tyres for a WOF, too knobly possibly, which bumps the price up.
The XL's Ks are getting up there. Is there any maintenance or problems that may arise from an old thumper with 50,000k's on the clock?
Here's the XR:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...86&permanent=0
Here's the XL:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=298549566
Is it my imagination or does the XL look like it has a bigger tank? That's a plus if it does ...
I know footpegs and topbox are do-able to either models so really I'd love to know:
Weight difference
Comfort difference
Reliability difference
Running costs Difference
I'm not a racer. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love the XR to bits but if there's a large comfort difference then it may be enough to sway the vote.
HelenOfTroy's DR650 felt just about right for me, not too heavy, not too big, plenty of beans with smooth delivery.
I want to keep it to a max of 600cc (so I don't have to pay Nick Smith more than need be, bastard), maybe down to 450-500ish if there was a great deal and I'd need to keep it under $3k as am a broke musician! :)
Being able to go 2-up would be a big plus, hence the interest in the XL, don't really like the idea of the XR's rear pegs ... especially with no chain guard for her petite ankles ...
Am not looking for a motox machine but one that can handle some fun off roading as well as the road ...
Thanks for any help!
Pete
p.s. unless any one of you fine people would have such a bike that you're thinking of selling and want it to go to a loving home ...

I've just removed the rear suspension to my xr650r to replace the linkage bearings. Inspecting the swingarm bearings, I noticed that even though there is no play and the inner rubber seals look good, the inner bearing races do not rotate at all. Is this normal, or they are normal bearings and the inner race should rotate?
Thing is the swingarm bearings are not cheap so I wouldn't replace them unless they need to.

Peeteey, my XR6 has foot pegs bolted to frame so shes pretty good for the passenger BUT when 2 up my riding position focking suxs:oi-grr: so ive taken the pegs of so i cant double :dodge:
is this the XR you were looking at http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dirt-bikes/auction-298230986.htm
looks pretty good but through my own experiences dont trust "full rebuilds" make sure the reciepts are all there, even then make sure you get her checked right out.
is this the XL http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Classic-vintage/auction-298549566.htm
both look very tidy, but they are getting on a bit.:(
for to up and more road work the xl would suit more as for off road the XL wont touch the XR:headbang:, the XL is slightly heavier and i think the frame is weaker as designed more for more road than trail/enduro.
after market tanks for both:2thumbsup

Yeah I hopefully have fixed my brake issue. I'll have to wait untill Greymouth to confirm if i'll die or not, its only on the street curcuits i'll have those sort of issues again. It appears keeping it rubber side down is more of an issue. Anyone got a set of plastic for a 650r lying around? hehehe

I have on mine CBR250 MC19 wheels. The advantage is the rear wheel doesn't need any machining. The disadvantage is you can't put fat tyres, so less grip. Personally I feel the grip is enough, even in the wet. The bike is very light anyway.
Some people say that the cush drive won't last, being made for a less powerful engine. I bought mine with these wheels on and put already more than 2000kms on it and the cush drive looks mint.
I know there have been people that put CBR600 f2/f3 rear (hub machining required) with a cbr900 front wheel for wider tyre, NSR250 wheels (hub machining required), CBR 250 MC22, VFR 400 (don't know any details about this one).

Correction to my previous post: even the CBR250 rear wheel need machining. I've just measured mine tonight and it turns out the cushdrive/sprocket carrier unit is slightly narrower than the stock one, so it has been machined.

Helen - best way to start a pig after its been laid over is to hold the throttle wide open - clears the fuel (Old MX trick)
When I got my bike it had 14/43 sprocket match but was fair revving at 100K's, was going to put smaller sprocket on rear but would have meant breaking the chain and taking a link out cause the chain adjusters were out to their maximum - went for a 15 front instead, 15/43 was the gearing on it when you rode it. If you got the adjustment you could come down to a 43 etc and still be good for off road.
Hear Sam been in good hands with Transalper :Punk:
Few things come across to make owning a pig one of the cheapest rides out to maintain.
Oil filters - scored one of those re-useable stainless steel oil filters on trade me for $40 - made in the states and filters six times more than a paper one. Wash in Kero.
Air Filter - Went to Para rubber and bought some filter foam and then folllowed the Honda manuals lead and soaked it in 80 wt gear oil and squeezed out excess - pulls like the proverbial school boy now :D woken it up Big Time !
Oil - Valvoline - changed every 1500K's - $10 a litre - drained oil feels good when rubbed between fingers :D

Draw up the design you want in Autocad or similar and get it laser/plasma cut from stainless. Just need to find a place that cuts stainless and figure out what grade stainless is the best one for a brake.

The dirt disk has a lot of vent holes in it so I can't cut it. Besides, the dirt brake caliper comes with the plastic protector for the front lower side of the brake disc which is very good when offroad.

Been through this process last year. Here in Wellington VTNZ are doing the registration for bikes (the Adelaide rd. branch) and they have a guy that does only mcycles. He gave me all the info I needed. Basically, if the bike model you have, has already been imported for road use by Honda you're sorted. In my case (KLX 300) it was imported only for dirt use and registering it would have been as difficult as registering a custom built machine (ten thousand certifications).
I also re-registered an XR650 a few months ago, but in my case the bike had been previously registered in NZ so it was a breeze.
Even if you're not from Wgtn you can call VTNZ Adelaide and speak to the guy about what's needed to register an imported bike. His name is Jerry and he is very friendly and helpful.

original title (Pink slip)
Bill of laden (shipping documents)
Proof of purchase (links to last registed owner in states)
unfortunately i had neither so it didnt get vinned:angry:
dont forget the brake declaration, would be cheaper if you know a bike shop that does it and get that done before it goes in.
How much US did you get it for?

Did you sell the KLX? Would it have been an expensive exercise to continue? Honda NZ imported the XRR up till 2006 I believe as road legal models with all the road legal bit & pieces from the factory, the 2007 models was off road only but the Baja DS kit meets the road legal std. e.g. SAE, CE, etc. etc., well for America at least. From general enquiry it sounds that I'll will need to get a brake declaration certificate from a Blue Wing Honda or a Honda dealer while it has the exact same brakes than the road legal models up to 2006 (plus, it's a year newer!).

It would have been quite an expensive exercise. I ended up selling it and buying a deregistered XR650 that was registered in NZ at some point - much easier to re-register.
Brake declaration is quite easy to get. As long as you have the standard brakes on, they will only check that parts are not broken and measure the disks thickness.

Given there are a lot of BRP owners watching this thread, I think this would be the test place to ask this question.
I am planning some big tours (like around australia) and I don't know whether I should kit out my BRP or it would be cheaper to get my hands on an old KLR.
I know the BRP's are reliable bikes and there are aftermarket fuel tanks to increase the range. Even the unconfortable seat is relatively easy/cheap to fix. However, the oil change interval (1000 km) and the weak subframe which drastically limits the amount of luggage are two issues I don't know how to surpass.
At 1000kms between oil changes, I would have to change the oil every day and a half, two days at most.

Top end work is pretty easy but I'd be lapping in the valves and replacing the valve guide seals while there. I'd also measuring the piston and bore and checking if it's time for a new piston too.

Set the level (forks fully compressed and no springs), don't worry about the quantity. Make sure you pump the forks to fully bleed them. Have a look at this vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glG3gUjxjEU&feature=player_embedded). For KTM forks but the XR's are cartridge as well.

Other than oil changes Ive been lacking in the maintenance department on the pig. Idle has been a bit "fluffy" lately so reset valve clearances last night and inlets have obviously streched (just like the DRZ) with the excessive revs its pulling on the track (main straight at ruapuna its on the rev limiter) It now starts so much easier and idles stong and even (funny that)
Question is, anyone found a 16 tooth front? They dont seem to be avaliable. I'm going to look into if the 600, dominators etc have the same spline and turn the spacer part off an old one to see if I can fit a 16.....will keep you all posted (not that anyone will probally need a 16, but im limited to rear sprocket due to the wheels im running).

Could be spaced to the XR's 13mm.

I got a vapor digital dash and im guessing it fairly accurate and I had 167 indicating so (and it will fit without the casesaver) i'm in hope of not really gaining top speed but to drop my rpm down and not have to roll off the throttle 2/3 down the straight. it will defently pull the higher gearing, be happy with 170 on a stock BRP. It will be nice to not see the red flashing LED "over rev" nutting off at me.
I looked on the JT sprocket site today and found a 650 dominator one 16 tooth but for a 525 chain so im going to see if they are avaliable and machine it to 520 width.
Yesterday I ordered a 13 front which will allow me to pull wheelies at will at Greymouth and make the offroad section a bit more bareable.

For those that are interested in running a 16tooth front, they do fit.......just, no way of running the case saver!!!! But the XL600V has the same spline and offset mounting bolt system but it is a 525 (pt no. JTF296-16) so i'm skimming 1.5 mm off the sprocket to make it a 520, i'll post photos and report on how it goes at the end of next month we it goes back to Ruapuna full track.
The JT sprocket website is great for there drawings and worth a look if you are trying to find a curlie.
As a side note Budjet Motorcycle spares found me a 13 tooth front which JT, Honda and most others dont list.....so ive managed to now obtain 13 to 16 for anything that pops up!

Hi Helen,
My bike's previous owner works with stainless steel and made the rack for it and had a matching bag/pack custom made for the rack
I have a flat aluminium plate that I use to screw on on to my DRZ's mudguard that Sam can have if he wants, I just bungy a bike bag to it. He would need to drill a few holes in his mudguard to attach it though.
I believe Cynna imported his rack from the states

Hey Dino,
I see a wossner sticker on your headlight shroud, have you put one of their pistons in your XR and if so what do you think?
I'm looking at putting new rings in my XR soon but haven't found anyone who has OEM rings here in NZ, might have to import from Japan.
If piston needs replacing I have seen Wossner pistons advertised on trademe thru motoworx so was thinking of getting one from them, your thoughts??
Cheers Matt

For quality i dont think you can beat the Wossner, The dude at waikato motor reconditions said it was an empressive looking piston of high quality. i think its great ive had no problems with it and they support all the oversize up to 5mm os:gob: . i got mine from these guys http://www.motoxparts.co.nz/motoxspares.php?brand=107&category=93 it worked out cheaper than ordering from the states as these guys did a bulk order every couple of months, plus it was a shit load cheaper and better quality than the Honda slug. this is just IMHO.

dino3310

camchain was done around 4k before rebuild, will look at vavles maybe in another 10,000kms. most of the bits n pieces are from bike bandits, but some of the seals and bearings i sorced local and of course the wossner from MXparts. Actually mate i recall from memory that he had ordered more XR pistons as there were a few popping up on terdme, he might still have some in stock.

I have been emailing motoxparts this week, he does have wossner piston and rings in stock now, problem is I'm not sure whether I need a new piston til I open her up, might only need new rings. They don't stock rings to fit OEM piston.

Oil leak/ case venting oil mist into airbox, or possibly valve guide seals, (the later normally shows up as a bit smoky first thing from cold though.
Wossners are good/great, but if you use one tell the machinist to bore to the EXACT wossner specs. They have a different clearance requirement than Wiseco etc. MHO

Oil leak/ case venting oil mist into airbox, ......
That rings a bell cause guys grab the crankcase breather oil separator (plastic conical thingame) from the XR650R and stick it on the KTM 950's. They suffer from a minor version of this issue. Have a look in your airbox and make sure it is not got engine oil in it.

.
Definitely no oil in airbox but spark plug gets pretty oily so can only really be the rings yet it doesn't blow any smoke even under hard accleration??
Would use 200-300mls of oil on a 4-5hour ride

Ummmm Matt, it was a bit smokey at the HAGD, just before it digested its air filter! mainly on over run. Mines the same but 1/2 your oil consumtion and no oily plug. Talking to Brendan at Honda Country (know these things inside out) told me that they will use oil and will only become an issue when they start showing metal in the filter. I'm living life to that rule and on his advice have gone to a cheap mineral oil and are doing it every 2nd race meet or 1000km.....oil consumption dropped on mineral.

Cheers Brent, thankfully no metal in filter thus far, a few people have told me XR's use a bit of oil so I'm not that concerned, have ordered a top end gasket set and going to go with the Wossner piston and will hold on to them til I get a chance to "do the deed"!

Mine is a one off by previous owner, powder coated stainless, top piece of tinted screen is off a wrecked BMW Dakar, it's great takes all the wind off my chests and leaves plenty of room in the cockpit for roll chart, hotgrips, MP3 etc. Headlight is plastic and very light off a car

Umm not sure of thickness but know it is made of stainless so heavier than alloy.
Looking good so far, in regard to my headlight, my stator has also been re-wound giving it more herbs to run a much brighter car headlight, not sure what light you had in mind
Attached is another couple of shots showing how my fairing is attached at the bottom, it isn't attached using mudguard bolt holes as per your idea
As per the second shot, originally when I got the bike the bolts lined up but I decided to drop the forks in the clamps about an inch which resulted in the headlight pointing to low. To compensate I drilled out a couple of chain links to tilt the screen back a bit more raising the angle of the light again if you get my drift.
Let me know if you would like some more shots or measurements

not sure on light either:blank: will see whats around and what gonna fit when im finished. eventually i'll get a ricky stator over from the states, unless i can find a cheaper rewind option either way i gotta save for that, i still got the original XR square light i could use... dunno yet, lots of options and lots of lights on trade me:scratch: , might even go H.I.D:eek:
ive still got the set on her now to put back on if i aint finished by the time the legs ready to ride, plus i'll keep the old stuff for mx tracks and ruff stuff.

I wouldn't bother with the old XR light, just not bright enough and given the trouble you are going to I would suggest buying the light first and designing the fairing around it might save you in the long run, the old Do it once, do it right" philosophy!
Here's another couple of angles

yeah i know what you mean.. thats a clever bit on the bottom mounts, mines a little different so im just going with the guard mounts.
as for the light im going to NOT gonna cut the hole out till i know whats going in.
for now im not to worried about output its just the buffeting on trips thats f#@ks me and that extra storage for the camera/map or lunch would be awesome.
when i can afford the stator upgrade i'll upgrade the lighting output even a 65watt in the old light would improve it 100%.
eventually (like a year or so) would like to have a lcd speedo, better lighting, gps and maybe a roll chart,.
o and an oil cooler mounted on the bottom of it:D

there will be a clear screen to add to it.
might change the bottom mount to the fork clamp so theres room for an oil cooler later on maybe, and shes pretty wide at 250mm so might narrow her up to 210mm to align with forks and fork mounts..... might increase mount bracket height for strength...
will make another tomorrow... any other ideas to add

Looking good but again I think you need to sort out headlight before spending $$$ on alloy. Need to consider depth of light internals, width of light and is face plate at 90 degrees to ground so beam will be straight ahead? Looks at the moment like light would be pointed straight at your front guard as opposed to road.
Don't forget indicator mounts
