start No2 prototype tomorrow which will iron out some of that, this is fun, wish i had more time.Hey bud, be careful with screens forward and vertical, they cause a lot of buffeting. I spent hours experimenting with screens and for me they want to be angled back and only high enough to take the air off your chest but not direct it at your helmet.
Have fun experimenting:niceone:

yeah mate i hear ya, might shorten the metal and extend the plastic and curve it back, well at least make it so i can muck around with plastic rather than metal... the screen set up on the big was mint it was like small is better:msn-wink:

:niceone: cool mate, look forward to the photos.
i had a lazy day today. i'l go with Matts advice before i get to far into it and sorce the light im gonna use. Was also looking at how to mount a screen i dont think it would take much, would just need a bracket coming up from the same mounting points on the forks.
Thats the only thing i hate about the XR, when your on the road after a day on the metal or tracks heading towards home and ya start getting that pinch in the middle of your shoulders... the last ride i did we rode home from national park fark i was down to 70kms for the last hour was just to much after a weekend of riding.
shit that bleeted on a bit:weird:

It will be something quick, The 650R has a two piece headlight and I'll look at repacing the top number board bit.

Hey guys. I see that some of you are thinking of changing the lights on your BRPs. If any of you wants to get rid of the original BRP lights let me know.
I have a crappy aftermarket headlight on my XR which is pretty much useless at night (those crappy streetfighter spotlights) and I was thinking that instead of risking buying an expensive aftermarket headlight still get the same crappy illumination, might as well find a cheapish OEM headlight assembly and bring the bike back to stock form.

Well worth the effort!!!! After the dusty butt i'll look at it as a plug to make tinted perspex ones so 1000km of testing if they are up to the task. I'm going to be riding with other BRP owners so will have to get them to evaluate its merrits. Matts one is higher and Col's bikes standard so be interesting to get them to ride my bike.

As a side note for lighting, I'm running a LED stop Tail and brought a 45/45W headlight bulb from Hampton Honda down here, effectively got 25% brighter headlight and with the loss of the tail light the current draw is simular. The BRP has a glass semi sealed beam and is a much better light than the earlier 600's. As dirt bikes go i dont think the headlight on the pig is too bad.

you could even try the LED indicators to bro they only 1w compared to the factory 5w.
i had the led tail but it didnt have the white plate light and it looked daft, i might try one of these LED tail bulbs going from your idea i should be able to get it down 10 or so watts and put another 10 in the lamp 228986

I'm sure the watts help but the quality of the lens and reflector are far more important and fitting a modern free form lamp for $50-$75 would be the best upgrade you could do. Shit I have a 1000000 candle power hand held spot light with 12v supply and a 15watt bulb...... all in the quality of the optics. Something like this http://www.narva.com.au/sitebuilder/products/large/58/72070.png with a low wattage bulb (its 165 x 100mm) could be the go.

I rode a BRP with this screen fitted last year and I wasn't impressed. It does take some of the wind off the rider but all the wind pressure and the buffeting seems to go in the handlebars - the steering becomes quite twitchy on the motorway.

been looking at those, theres a couple bikes on here with them, XT600, DR650 they seem to be holding up pretty well.. would need to try one first i think as im not to keen with the bar mount after reading centaurus comment. But yeah definately worth a serious look.
on another note... ive got led blinks (2x1w) on the rear and orderd an led tail bulb (1.5w)
and the old gear was blinks 2x5w and tail 23w so i figure thats gained me 29.5w me thinks.
so if thats the case then i should be able to up the headlight from 35w to 55w does that sound about write?

Oh well, I've finally jumped in at the deep end after deciding months ago my baby needed new rings !!!
Cracked the cases and have taken piston out.
Piston and barrell were in surprisingly good order but the oil seal ring which was pretty loose. Decided to reuse original piston until found out there are no rings sets available in NZ, ex Japan only, for $145. Bugger it couldn't wait 10-20 working days so got a new Wossner sent down overnight from AUckland $230 thankyou very much! Have dropped head into the pro's to get valves and seating ground, however they said intake valves are stuffed so back to Mr Honda, thankfully got last set in NZ ex Bluewing in AKL which are on the way which is where I'm at now...waiting waiting
I have had to make up my own left and right case gaskets as again ex Japan at $80 and $130 respectively :shit:

So far so good but crapping myself that I'll leave a piece out somewhere

Make sure the clearances, (piston-barrel) are within the Wossner specs, (info in the kit).
They are different from the Honda specs, (slightly more tolerance/clearance if I remember is required).
Quite important.
They are a bloody nice piston.
Also, oil control ring assy's run a different tolerance than the top rings, so don't let this spook you.

22 litre I think. My original tank did about 170 to reserve. Never got to reserve on this one yet! I think it will do about 300km. Love the pics by the way. My aim is to get down there on the XR one of these days and do some of those roads I hear so much about:drool:.
Nice thread and just look'ng in ....have'nt had a big Trail Bike for a few years but thinking about getting another soon . XR650 is hard to find so thinking about a DR650 , plan is we've got something we can jump on and do some back country stuff - two up anmd make a change from the Road stuff we do ...and a DR sounds like value for money, even new. Me-thinks we can't go wrong, don't wanna go the XTZ route, just keep it minimal . Any worries with a DR650 at 8.5k new ??

Looking at the wheels shouldn't this be in the Motard section?

Yesterday spent almost two hours trying to fit new cam chain over cam sprocket and on to cam but after several attempts and one tainty gave up in disgust.
This morning after trying every possible remedy realised that Hamptons had given me the wrong length cam chain...118 links instead of 122 links. Interestingly the packaging had the right part number on it. The XR600 had a 118 link so that's where they may have stuffed up, just another wee trick to look out for

Had one of those prior to the KLR. Was a English import so had no rev counter and the pillion pegs were bolted to the swingarm, other than that was pretty much the same. Nice bike, but it was terrible off road, it either went straight when I wanted to turn or the back would come round too far. Just totally random. Spent a lot of time in ditches. I could not believe how good the KLR was off road after spending a couple of years on the XL, thats how bad it was.

Tip of the day for adjusting valve clearances:
When doing front (exhaust valves) you need to go past TDC allowing the piston to drop approx 2cm before adjusting. Doing exhaust valves at TDC gives a false reading. Intake valves are to be set at TDC.
NB: This is an XR specific method

Hi guys, I need your help.
When I bought my BRP, I checked the valve clearances and they were ok. Now, a few thousand kms later, I decided to check them again. They seem a bit tight so I adjusted them.
Unfortunately, after adjusting them I have the "loose valve clatter". I checked the adjustement a few times to make sure it's ok, but the valves still tick.
The service manual sais: make sure the auto decompressor is not activated. I have no ideea how to do that. I made sure I didn't turn the engine backwards but more than that I don't know how to check the state of the auto-decompressor.
Is there anything I'm missing? Is there any trick on the BRPs?
mattsdakar
4th April 2011, 11:22
Just make sure there is some slack in the decompression cable.
As per earlier post of mine you need to go just past TDC to do the exhaust clearances. If you have done both intake and exhaust at TDC this will probably be the noise you can hear.
If you try again and go past TDC I quarantee the exhaust valves will be loose at this point. I found the best way to check was to stick a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole and let the piston drop about 2cm. (Intake valves are done at TDC)
This is actually contrary to what my manual states but works, was shown this trick by well respected chch bike mechanic after I took my bike to him with same dilemma!
Good luck

If Struan don't be takin' it - there be a couple of heinekens here abouts, oh, ahh (typing dosen't really convey a pirate accent, does it?) ;)

At this stage I'd like to try the T64 for Brass Monkey, especially if the weather is going to be anything like last year.

You might be in luck. I bought an xr600 one last year hoping it would fit the xr650r but it doesnt. They changed the front axle thickness on the 600 at some point.
I believe mine is for a 17mm witdh (I'll measure tonight). what axle width do you have on your bike?

Gidday
For those of you that have already done this I could use some advise on setup.
Front is very soft and will need respringing, I weigh 200lb 90kg, but what other setting are others running.
Have you dropped forks through clamps, How Far?
Front rebound and compression setting that work for you and your weight/riding style.
Any advise appreciated
Cheers

I have dropped my forks down about 1.5cm in the clamps, I've had my forks revalved and resleeved so mine might be quite different to yours.
What you want to do is work out how many clicks you have for adjustment then start at about 70% hardness and play around with them from there
Take a screwdriver with you on your next ride and everytime you stop give them a half turn etc

i bought some bits and pieces in a trademe sale, was a box of cruiser crap but alas there was a screen all for the price of $6:yes: and then i was scanning trademe and a Givi screen with mounts poped up for a very fair price and walla, so to answer the question the screen is of a big fat arsed cruiser of which i've cut down and the mounts are of the Givi screen.
So 238156 + 238157 = 238158

I've been thinking lately to get rid of my supermoto kit for the Xr650R. Haven't used it in a while and I don't forsee the need to put it back on the bike. I was thinking of gauging the "public interest" before putting it on trademe.
the kit contains:
- Front and rear wheel (from a CBR250 and machined to fit) with warrantable tyres, spacers, recently replaced bearings and seals.
- front wheel has oversize brake disk that comes with bracket for the OEM brake caliper
- Rear wheel comes with sprocket and oversize brake disk that fits with the OEM brake caliper - this one is brand new - never been used. alternatively I can supply the normal CBR250 rear disk and a caliper that can be installed on the XR and fits it (this is how I had it setup when it was with SM wheels)
- Trailtech vapor speedo assembly
- supermoto front fender
- additional OEM kickstand that can be shortened to suit the smaller wheels (instead of cutting the original kickstand).
As a sidenote, the day before removing the SM kit, the bike passed a WOF so everything in this kit is warrantable.
All this for $2000. I know few people buy bikes in winter so if there's no interest here, I won't bother listing it 'till spring.

Price might be slightly high when ya can get S/M wheel set up for $1500 and are stronger than Mags, not taking away that you have everything and more to go straight into the bike. I just rode my 650 to the brass monkey via 3 gravel road passes and had to keep reminding myself that mags can easily be munted with the next pot hole ya hit. What tyres are fitted?
Great fun the BRP in Motard trim and i can run mid pack or better at levels, ruapuna or greymouth s/r on a 11 year old bike with a simular wheel set up!

Rear: Michelin PIlot active - decent grip and in seems to last forever

The acerbis sahara tank is really good. I bought one for my BRP and used it last summer for the big trip down south (two weeks). Being a big tank it looks a bit ungainly but I was surprised to find the centre of gravity doesn't move upwards on the bike with a full tank - it just moves forward (don't need to worry about accidental wheelies when accelerating :) ). Better still, the added weight in the front balanced nicely with my soft panniers in the back. And the quality is up there.
However, I use that tank only when I go touring. Doing SERIOUS offroad with that tank is a hassle and the added weight (if you fill it up) in the dirt or deep mud it a serious inconvenience.
