my xr arrived yesterday so its time to start shopping round for some extras. there doesnt seem to be a xr thread like the dr650 one so id better make a start

key ignition, pack rack and bark busters are first on my list . it has been set up pretty well so dont need to worry about decorking it or getting a larger tank

has anyone got any suggestions for the ignition and pack rack

of course

hopefully i can change the title to xr owners thread

found the answer to my lack of ignition problem - just have to make a choice now
1 - key ignition switch . looks simple to install for $150nz
2- trail tech vapur computer with ignition. lots of features but a bit more complicated to install. $340 nz

probably have to go the cheaper way

both are from america - cant seem to find anything here or from oz

I'm glade you have included 600's. A couple of weeks ago I brought my third 600 (I should never sold the other two). It was too cheap to not buy it and has been 630 kitted, the downside is its a RE twin carb model. Unfortuatly I probally wont be joining you on Adventure rides but aim to trail ride and motard the thing.

I got a Trail Tech Vapor for my old bike from this guy in Auckland http://vm.net.nz/xtremewholesale/catalogue/?category=43&customlist=1. He's got lots of good stuff he imports.

I haven't got a key ignition, just have a Xena alarmed disc lock - cost about $70, probably more secure than an ignition key.

cynna

i should get one of those disc locks as well but i t brings back bad memories of when i ws 15 with my new bike at school.....

the key ignition wont be very secure but just another thing to slow down a thief and to give me piece of mind when i park it up

might have to add a dummy by the speedo as the one i have ordered fits on the radiator behind the tank shroud

im thinking of ordering this rack for about $230

only really looking at something to hold sleeping bag and tent so dont need anything too flash or expensive. this will come in handy for lifting the bike out of bogs as well so wont need to get one of those tugger straps

anyone got one of these or can suggest something else

Mines got some bits welded on to take a ventura rack - see http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=83420&page=4

The ventura racks are quite cheap and you can get the grab bar, high rack or low rack and interchange them depending on the situation. Probably get the whole set for not much more than $230 (rack alone for mine was $69 - already had the brackets and grab rail on the bike). Cheers

Little ride we did on Saturday - Kaiikanui Rd North-East of Whangarei

Real nice twisty gravel road out to Mimiwhangata peninsula

Awesome views of the coast (a bit overcast though)

http://desertwatch.typepad.com/photos/bikes/pc310039.jpg

A neat bit of coast. Did the loop out around Helena Bay then down the seal a bit and back onto Pigs Head Road and home. The East Coast is a bit tame for getting off the road (all fenced up) but the gravel was good and the scenery was stunning. We'll head out the West Coast next weekend maybe.

22 litre I think. My original tank did about 170 to reserve. Never got to reserve on this one yet! I think it will do about 300km. Love the pics by the way. My aim is to get down there on the XR one of these days and do some of those roads I hear so much about:drool:.

Are you still looking for an ignition key? If so Check this out (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-XR400-XR250-XR650-CRF250-CRF450-Ignition-Key_W0QQitemZ330298662994QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Mot orcycle_Parts?hash=item330298662994&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318). I've got a UK ebay account and am getting a few bits and pieces sent over from the UK very soon and could buy that for you. I'm in Chch at the moment so you could pick it up when it arrives. (Offer conditional to letting the XR400's on this tread as well!!).

I've just bought a XR400 off trademe (my 2nd) looking forward to putting all my go faster goodies on it and taking it for a spin will post some pics when arrives

yes i ended up getting one from ebay in the states. the one you found tho would have been more ideal tho - it is more visible to thieves. the one i got sits in between the radiator shroud and tank so unless you are looking for it you cant see it.

even tho they are simple enough to override to someone that knows what they are doing at least they may slow them down. i have an old DR ignition that im going to mount in the same way as the one in that link just so i have something visible and just wire it in to nothing

thanks for the offer tho monchopper - will have to keep an eye out for another xr400 on the road. i saw one a few weeks ago at lyttleton and then again a couple of days later at new brighton

and i still havent got round to changing the thread title to include all xr's...... will get round to finding out how tho

My mate turned up today with nearly new DR650 (he's changed the pipe otherwise stock). I was interested to see how it went compared to my XR600 so took it for a spin, psyching myself for the feeling of "I wish I got one of these instead" (DR650 was on the top of my list before the XR came up).

It felt smaller than the XR (partly due to my big tank and bar risers but also slightly lower seat on the DR). Performance wise it was a little smoother - I can see why they would be nicer for distance road work, but the instant kick in the guts wasn't there like the XR6. It was nice but I'm pleasantly smug that my old XR has got the edge. :Punk: and it's got character...:ride:

DR's CV carb VS XR's proper carb.

However it's quite easy to put a pumper carb on the DR :D

Just picked up some motard wheels for the XR off TM. I've been looking for some spare wheels ever since I got the bike and found these for $300 which is amazing - were also on a 93 XR6 so should be no problem for fitting. A bigger disc on the front but comes with an adaptor for the caliper so it's a quick change jobby.

Now I can blast around town in the week and put the knobs on for the weekend - they should arrive this week :woohoo:

$52.50 by Fastway Couriers - Masterton to Whangarei. I'd say that was pretty good for the weight of two wheels - I've found Fastway about the best for that sort of thing. I was breaking up a car a couple of years ago and sending bits around the country and doing some research Fastway were the best at that time for the fairly big stuff (some other couriers won't take large/heavy).

Well this is a 650 thread after all...

Anybody want to buy some wheels? I got them both on today but found the back one is not quite lining up on the sprocket side. If a put a spacer in there the disk won't line up (by about 3mm). Also can't seem to get the front calipers on - my old disk was a little worn and just can't get the space wide enough to get over the new disk (both 4mm but the old one was worn nearer to 3 - do I have to take the calipers apart or let out the fluid?)

I've got so frustrated I've wasted 2 Saturdays on this I've put the wheels on TradeMe here (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=211524004). See pics of the bike on my other thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=2012705#post2012705)

Stick a clean screwdriver in between the pads and lever them apart.
Makes it a lot easier.
Make sure you pump the brakes a few times before using them for an emergency stop :D

Thought I'd chime in after reading this thread for while. Got me an Xr 650R about 7 months back, after two years riding my old Xr 500 over here in France. The riding here is mostly rocky trails in woods with abit of fast country lanes. It can get abit tight at times. The 650 is like a tractor!! Put a new tire on it after riding all winter slipping all over the place and wow!! what a difference. Infact the beast gets me out of more trouble then it gets me into. A bit of a step in the trail or a bit of a dip with a flick of the throttle and its all behind you. Good fun the big bores. Hoping maybe soon to get some rims with road tyres give give it bash on the road. Dunno yet.

Have any one else had problems with wof? Last year everything was OK, but now they have some new rules and my XR was way too loud.

Muffler end is uncorked and I'm trying to get the "corked" pipe end from Honda. If any one have one of these parts lying around, I would be more than happy to borrow one for the WOF...

Is it just this one wof-station or are they all as strict as this one?

Rules were ammended in June 08

Basicaly anthing over 125 cc must come in at under 97 dba
For a single cylinder four stroke this test is carried out at 3000 RPM

Most testing stations and Motorcycle dealers are now enforcing this rule.

OK, have to get bike under 97dB some how.

Is there anywhere info how the noise measurement should be done? Wof-guy was holding the sound meter about 40 cm from the pipe, usually I have seen measurements taken from 1 meter.

It might be difficult to get bike quiet enough even with original pipe end...maybe I have to buy pipe like one below!

depends where you go for the wof some places are stricter then others. i never had any trouble with getting a wof for my harley with drag pipes. the same place also gives my uncorked xr wof as well

now it will be on the computer that you failed the noise test so you cant really get somewhere else to pass it so easily. maybe ask on the main forum for some suggestions?

i would take it to another shop and ask if they would pass it being that loud. if so pay for another wof and get it done there

I went for a WOF here at the main testing station in Whangarei yesterday and after reading your post was a little apprehensive. My XR600 has a WR450 pipe on it which is quiet at low revs :msn-wink: but pretty loud when you open it up (consequently short-shifting around town required) :Police:. But they didn't seem to notice the noise (or the broken tail-light LOL) and i never noticed them testing it. So good to go for another 6 months anyway :first:.

WOF :done:

I made diy-baffler from stuff that I found from my garage. Made bike much quieter, still bit more dB's than legal at high RPM's, but since the bike dont have rev counter and they were not able to say when the exact 3000 rpm is they let it go trough :) Asked to make it bit more quieter for next WOF... I guess that filling muffler with wool will do the last dB's.

Nothing big happened to performance, but made the bike much nicer to ride with out ear plugs. And still has that nice big bore sound :2guns:

I put a new air filter and no-toil filter oil in my XR600 and for some reason I'm finding it harder to start and not running so cleanly at higher revs. It gets to about 140 in top and starts spluttering. I'm wondering if the air flow is improved with the new filter and the jetting maybe needs tweaking (as far as I know it's standard jetting but is running a WR450 pipe so will be flowing easier anyway).

Any thoughts? I know it needs new rings so wondering about getting it rejetted when I get the rings done.

Sounds like it's running a bit leaner if it's running out of puff.

I had the shop look at my XR600, wondering if it was just the rings needing doing but when they took it apart there was some damage in the top of the piston plus some water damage to the bore where she had a drink at some stage so they gave her a rebore, new cam-chain and refaced the valves. It's got rid of the oil use problem and I've done about 800km running her in (mainly a trip to the Cape with my young-uns a couple of weekends ago - see pics below) and I'm just about to change the oil.

But it's still no easier to start (it used to be easier when I get her - maybe it was because the weather was warmer or because I've recently turned 50 ). Anyway I read somewhere that if you run slightly lighter oil it can make them easier to start. Anyone tried this? What sort of grade would be safe?

Any other ideas of things I can do short of buying a KLR or DR? I know I have the technique okay as it used to start pretty consistently 4th kick or so from cold and 2nd or 3rd from hot. I've heard you can get a trick spark plug that helps - anybody tried that? Also I've heard you can change the carb to an Edlebrook (?) or Mikuni pumper but that's out of the question unless someone has one sitting in their shed they'd like to donate...

Any thoughts?

my xr needs a stronger kick to start then my dr350 does but it is never much of a hassle except wehn its cold and been sitting a while - then i just try to start it about 30 minutes before i need to go and before i have all my gear on. its amazing how hot you get trying to kick start a bike a few times...

i have heard you can fit electic starters to them so that may be something to look into

I need the rear shock spring preload limits if anyone has a XR650R owners manual?

I have found workshop manual but they refer you to owners for these settings & had no luck finding/searching for one to download/check.

I know the standard is 236.5mm & service limit 240mm.

I'm a big fat bugger so need to check max so i can preload spring to see if i'll (probably) need to up spring rate (weather i do or not is another thing!)

Any help much appreciated

I'm planning on doing a work trip through NZ in the next month or two and want to do it on a bike. My problems is a) the XR is okay for 300km or so a day but wouldn't want to do much more and b) I can't afford two bikes at present SO I've put the XR on Trademe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=241679653) :weep:

I really want to do this trip but I'll be very sad to see her go. Anyway if anyone is interested or maybe into doing a swap with something tourable (fairing and panniers) of similar value let me know.

i remember you having problems with yours - thats why i quickly bolted them on to see if it was going to be too much of a hassle before i spent any more money on it

was a bit tricky squeezing the rear 160 in - was a bit of a tight fit. had to remove the disc guard and will have to grind a bit off the chain guide. apart from that i had no trouble. havent been able to test them as i have to get a caliper spacer for the larger front rotor and fit my other chain

overall it was quite an easy change over

cant say how much in case my girlfriend reads this lol. was a bit more then i was supposed to spend....

My XR600 had 120/90 18's (Michelin AC10's) which equates to 4.60 I think. That seems to be a good size for it - fits the rims fine and doesn't rub but still nice and fat.

Hope that makes sense!

I thought it was equivalent to a 5.10 but I just did a quick metric to imperial measurement and it comes out at 4.60, but it certainly looks wide like a 5.10 so that explains it I guess.

And don't forget ballards for info and bits also.

14th November 2009, 19:22
Check the parts fiche for each year model, see what the wheel bearing sizes are. Not only will this tell you the axle size, but if they are close you may e able to easily change them to suit.

eg when I used '91 DR350 wheels on my '01 DR-Z250, the rear was identical but the front had 15mm axle vs 17 on the later bike. A change of wheel bearings sorted that out. The number of brake disc bolts was different but didn't matter, as the dimensions of the disc were the same.

You have to watch the centring of the wheel; swaps like these often involve machining up spacers to suit.

The Strom is going well - very competent and good performance. I've done a bit of gravel and some dirt tracks but at very sub-crazy speeds:yawn: I don't want to hurt my new panniers (or myself). Not the hoon-factor of the XR in the gravel but you get there.

hi

im new to trail bikes but have had my xr650r for about a year. done about 6k with no troubles apart from a cam chain that was replaced. not sure how bulletproof they are - i have never seen a high milage one for sale..... not sure if thats a bad sign

another good site to check out is xr650r.net

normally you'l here some niggly sound as a warning before something major happens, eighties XRs would be blowing up before any reasonal klms where reached, but the 90s up are primo... you dont see many high klm ones for sale cause no one wants to part with such a wonderful beast:2thumbsup plus Honda dont sell them here anymore( tossers:tugger: )

Hi all, I'm seriously looking at trading my SMX and DRZ on a XR650R. I've owned a couple of XR600's and know them well but have had nothing to do with the 650. What should I look for? Are they as bullet proof as the 600? Claimed power is up 10-12 hp on the 600 (when derestricted)? Any input would be appreciated as long as its constructive.

Cheers

Its a done deal, I'm the owner of a 2000 XR650R and love the thing, if the front door was bigger I'd be sleeping with it. Sorry guys its going to be motarded but will defently be doing adventure rides too.

For now I need to stop doing wheelies everywhere, but with that much torque how can you not!!!!!!

yep getting there, i only tidied up the rough bits with a spray can:whistle:, was looking at full strip down and powder coat but all funds going into motor now....
most likely leave the little tank on(easy wheelies) and just chuck the big tank on for the longer rides.

I finally bought a BRP miself. It looks like it has been prep-ed for motar racing (or at least partially):
- 110 front and 140 rear street tyres on 17inch rims
- braided brake lines
- secondary air filter where the crankcase breather hose should be
- suspect some suspension work has been done - it feels much stiffer than a stock xr
- yoshimura race muffler (stock header)
- looks like swingarm upgrade (either yoshimura swingarm or the guy just stuck a yoshimura sticker on it, but the swingarm looks newer than the bike)
- upgraded brakes both front and back.
- no engine work according to the previous owner but can't be sure
- endurance odometer (the front wheel doesn't have the thingy that the stock speedo cable hooks into) and upgraded headlights

I have a few questions for people who have had a 650 for a while:
- does crankcase breather hose replacement for an air filter have any benefits, or should I put back the hose to the airbox?
- does anybody have some XR650 parts laying around? I have a few bits missing/broken
- how can I tell if the suspension is the stock one or has been upgraded?
- for people who motarded their xr650 - how did you solve the kick stand issue (with 'tard wheels it's too long). Cut it, or you have two kickstands and you switch them when you switch the wheels?

Check compression and air/fuel mix. If these are right it should start first pop. I am not an experienced kick-starter but I'm amazed how easily mine starts - almost always first kick.

got it going in the end - started as soon as i kicked it without the choke on. only took a 100 kicks before i tried that

due for a valve check and it had been sitting a few weeks if that had anything to do with it

sitting a few weeks fuel couldve been a little stale in the bowl, but yer the choke is a touchy thing, im still figuring out how cold is it to use full/half or nudda. sometimes i havent had her going for week and she'll fire straight away with no choke.

Cool. Ive got to make one for my XR at some stage and thats a good idea. One thing I'd suggest though - invert the bolts at the back. If you hit a rock or two the only way you'll get it off is to grind the nutts off (ouch!) The mushroom head bolts are perfect for use upside down.

Cheers R

yeah though about that, but then i'd have to change the bracket cause the bolt gets in the way of the mounting bolts, ive banged it with the hammer to bend them a little so the nuts wouldnt come off so there gonna get grinded of anys so sacrificial for now

Just got quoted $170 3 weeks x Japan for one of these :shit:

Dino, did you find one for yours locally?

Chains started to eat thru swingarm so need one pronto, any body brought one recently?

Not gonna pay $170, might have to DIY one unless i can find a cheaper option

When I needed one for my previous DR650 the local suzi shop suggested a nylon chopping board cut and bent to shape. Gotta be cheaper than $170!

i was quoted about $190 and about 4 weeks so i got an aftermarket one of the net for around 100 and only took around 5 days to get here

made of stronger material thats supposed to last longer then the stock one as well

couldnt find any locally and wasnt going to pay twice the price and wait more then twice as long for the honda shop to order one in

Naa mate none locally, well none that i want to pay for any way, when i buy one it will prolly be through bikebandit or simular, theres quite a few sites over there that have every possible part you could need for an xr:Punk: Fook bluewing honda ya rip of pricks(yeh yeh i know small market different economy blah blah blah)....
anyway this is what i came up with, cut from a blue plastic drum, done just over 1k and just a light bit of wear should get 10k out of it.
sorry bad photos, just took them now with cell phone
