Got three XRR's so far this year. Four if Cynna brings his. Missing Casualty and possibly the guy from Ashburton (or was it Timaru) but he could have also changed bikes.

hi there , while im away on holiday with the family , i have had a look at a bike that has been looming around for sale for ages , Its a uk based 05 XR650l i'm told is the power plant and it seriously lacking some grunt , :brick::crazy::brick: to the stage that i walked away from it . to go do some recherche on it( gooogle) , i had the ready s in the pocket, but i recon it had the power of a dr250, the bike felt tight with 8500km that looked to be genuine. I know you can de cock them and loose the pipes to something free flowing , but fu-k me i could only launch the front wheel in 1st pulling on the bars like hell. and it was only about 30-60 cm for a short time.http://www.motorradonline.de/sixcms/media.php/11/thumbnails/MRD_12_2005_Honda_FMX650.jpg.289913.jpg

dino3310
26th December 2011, 21:20
like TRIBOY sez "hate the carb"
big difference between the CV XRL and the Slide XR600r even with standard XRL's the XR6 feels way more responsive.
There might be some heavier restrictions on the bike been a uk model, i think the XRR had like a restictor in the inlet boot or somethink like that:confused: + the smog kit junk - like cruza said "detuned"
Triboys XRL pulls well for stock but the XRR's pull better:bleh:
plug and play mukuni and a megacycle cam with decork and she'll pull like a school boy, but then thats a few$$$
nice looking bike though, those forks and rims would look grouse on my XR6:msn-wink:

There was a page on the net entitled BRP achille's heel with the most common/known failures - nothing on it is actually major. However I can't find the URL anymore.
On top of thet, being a thumper and a dirt bike, the first things I would check:
- compression (the most important). Try kicking it thourgh the TDC (top dead center) without the use of the manual decompressor and if you can without significant effort then the compression is under question
- bearings: front/rear wheel and rear linkage/suspension. Invidually they might not be expensive but if you end up doing the whole rear it will not be cheap
Another way to see the state of the engine is to start it from cold and see how easy it is.
puddytat
10th January 2012, 22:36
Cheers for that.....things like bearings & linkages i could do myself to save $$$,thanks for the tip re compression etc. To start cold are they the standard find TDC, one kick with choke, next kick with no choke like the old XRs of the 80's I used to have? My xr250 really kicked back hard:mad:
Does anyone here recognise the bike at all......Id add a likny but I havent sussed out how to do that yet.

Take it 1.6L the oil capacity with filter change, took 1.9 out and reading was just slightly over the full mark.
Read while ago there was a fault at some stage with the supplied dipstick of giving the false reading that more oil needed to be added ?
How much do you normally put in ?

Sweet, good buy with all the extras. I had same decision between 525 and XR, from what I seen on trademe the 525 was good for about 300hrs (10,000 k's) before a rebuild - guy I bought motard set off his pig had done 80,000 k's and was just starting to use oil.
If you looking at mainly doing MX tracks probably best with a lighter better geared SX KTM or YZF's etc, if you dont live close to the track and not have money to burn you will have to trailer your bike to take full advantage of decent knobs anyway.
Read KTM state 525 no good for highway use , RFS motor not designed for it.
Anyone heard what highest amount of K's someone has gotten out of the KTM 520 to 530 series ?
Yep yep decisions decisions :D no one perfect bike out there that does it all ?

Hi Guys.
Recently bought me the said beast [ 2003 ex tauranga trademe deal]. Want to ride the corners differently to the Hog line. I am changing the back sprocket to 45 as it had a 40 and the front is a 15. A little more get up and go expected. In the process figured the rear wheel bearings were shot, so have replaced them. Chain is knackered as well and need to go up from 106 links to 108/110 as she wasnt long enough to go 40 to 45t. Is anyone selling the stainless wheel spacers as the alloy ones are all cut out by the seals. Also any particular chain recommendations O ring or otherwise. running a Pirelli scorpion rear tyre.
Cheers for any info.

I chose the easy way out. For the sports bike I am very particular about tyres and I've tried enough brands and models to know what I like and what I don't. For the dirtbike however, I don't put enough kms to get a change to test that (only about 10,000 km/year) so I stick with kenda offroad tyres. They chew pretty fast on asphalt (since they're knobblies) but the knobs pattern gives them a decent grip on the road (not so much in the rain :D ) and a very good grip offroad. Moreover, being one of the cheapest (if not THE cheapest) road legal knobblies, I can affort to replace them when they wear out and not have to keep swapping between tyres depending on where I want to go riding on a given day.
And believe me, I've tried a few road legal knobblies that are twice the price and wasn't very impressed either offroad or on the street.

I had some IRC's on one of my old XR400's, things were amazing, we have mean some tire ripping rocks around here and they seems to last really well while still offering good grip, haven't seen them since sadly, but this was a few years ago. Think they were a budget tire, but can't remember if they were DOT approved or not. Tried Kenda's on my old XT and it ripped them to bits in no time on the same terrain.

I had the Pig out on Sunday, Ryan (coonyer) and I did a organised high country trail ride up at Flock Hill station (past Porters Pass near Lake Pearson)
Lots of slippery clay after heavy rain overnight but had a blast, Ryan unfortunately lost an engine mount bolt after his 2nd lap so had to sit the rest of the day out. No other 650R's there but there was a fairly mint road legal XR600 circulating .
I love blasting past fancy pants motorcross bikes on my road legal 23ltr fuel tanked beast on these rides, very satisfying! :bleh:

true, most of it looks to be in good cond, however i wonder about the wear on the engine covers... all this is speculation until you actually talk to the bloke that owns it, plus i'm a skeptical prick at the best of times...
what do we do about replacing them? well for me the 650 was a compromise, i found my 400 a better and more agile bike in the tricky stuff but i was going to kill it on the road, so i chose the bigger machine. I've rued the decision many a time stalled half way up a firebreak and covered in sweat, but when it comes to open dirt road blasting, the power always makes me smile

In relation to replacing engine covers, I put my foot brake lever through my right engine cover earlier this year (thats another story).
Replacement was only about $80 bucks (ex AKL not Japan) and after one trail ride it looks totally scuffed up by my boots
so don't look to much into the condition of the engine covers on a XR

Gentlemen, could you be so kind as to tell me if the 1986s Xr250r and Xr600r's wheels are identicle (well any other parts for that matter). Someones wrecking one tardeme and Eddieb's thread has put me off changing tyres forever. So I plan to waltz them to me local shop and have a set of duals (road n trails) and just switching when needs arise.
Ive trawled for a microfiche to no avail, read a few nightmares from the motard threads about swapping rims etc, just not good reading for the mechanically inept.
So cheers for any help setting up me new hobby the DB riders have finally worn me down, so tentative steps into adventure riding at first.

I wouldn't have a clue LoC i could only asume they would be the same except the axle size on the 250 might be smaller and possibly a narrower profile on the rim..... maybe measure up your axle and hub width etc and get the seller to do the same.
ive wanted two sets of rims but when ever any come up ive never got the coin:brick:
Well scouring the net for a "what fits my bike" thread came up with jack squat, so looks like I'm gunna have to do it myself, what seems clear is items with different OEM part numbers can still be physically identicle and vice versa. BUT theirs a wealth of knowledge out there I need to collate, so a serious cut n paste session might be in order!

....Eddieb's thread has put me off changing tyres forever. So I plan to waltz them to me local shop and have a set of duals (road n trails) and just switching when needs arise. .....
Which thread is that?
It's not that big a deal once you have the hang of it but in the long run I found I settled on a compromise tyre and just rode that tyre most the year round, only changing for very special occasions. That was on the Transalp first time round.
Now with the DR I do have two sets of rims and while yes that is a big bonus I eventually couldn't be arsed changing wheels every weekend either.
Just remember find your focus and get a tyre to suit. When we last spoke you only wanted to do easy gravel to start with so almost any tyre would be fine for that but I don't remember how many sealed km's you were expecting to mix in with the gravel.
If there's going to be a lot of seal or you really want to be able to hang on to seal in the corners then that's going to affect your choices.
J and I must come up for another visit soon, we've missed a whole season now and we're limited to 4 wheeled travel again in 5 more weeks for several months thanks to the cost of REG's and the fact I want to filter some money aside to finally do some suspension work on the bikes.

My neighbour has had it sitting in his garage for the last 4 years so I plucked up the courage to make an offer that didn't result in injury. When he showed me it it still had the tag from the local Honda dealer for a rebuild it had done 4 years ago and it hasn't moved since. It came with a folder full of history etc so for once in my life I may have not bought a lemon.

Best price I could get in NZ $167 + GST 2 weeks from Japan
OEM Price from Honda dealer $237 + GST again 2 weeks from Japan
No brainer really!
Isn't too dissimilar to the original I'm having to replace (which suffers the anoying floppy kickstarter syndrome. Inner was too slogged out to simply put in a stronger spring for the ball bearing...really it needs a sleave inserted) BUT in the too hard box it goes with all my other "Īll save myself a few bob" DIY projects!

Yup i agree about Ecohonda, still check OEM parts prices too. When I was fixing my VTR thou, the OEM sidecover was $80 less from the local honda dealer, Econohonda blew them outta the water on everything else i brought tho

It can't all be blamed on the dealers either, blue wing honda have had us all by the balls for years. Personally i'd rather support the locals before going to ebay or trade me, face it people, we NEED our local bike shops, but you gotta draw the line somewhere
dino3310
10th July 2012, 13:24
non OEM parts are a lot cheaper from the local, but when they want to sting me $470 for a counter shaft when i can get it for $130us:crazy:
some of the non franchise shops are pretty good for sorcing parts at better prices, demitris in morrinsville is a local on for me there half pet store half motorcycle accessories, they helped me sorce some odd sized bearings for the DRBIG in 2 days where suzuki took nearly 2 months and twice the price:crazy:
but yeah i support the locals as much as i can but i think if it wasnt for places like trademe and the interweb i wouldnt be riding at the moment.
would love to spend 6 months riding in the US and buying up shit to bring back

never used to use the decomp on the 400, i didn't think it was even possible to start the 650 without it tho! They should have done what yamaha did with the early xt series and the auto decomp, that was a far superior system i thought

dino3310
11th August 2012, 22:35
the XR600 has a auto on the cam which can be a pain at times(hard to find TDC), upgraded cams like hotcams etc dont have them and without the auto on the 600 you NEED the manual decomp, The 650 seems a lot easier to kick over but then there a total different donkey
madmartin
11th August 2012, 22:54
there's some kinda auto anti kick back thingy on the 650 isn't there?

As old hands with trail bikes (early '70s) we all learnt a trick when we ran out of gas.
There was always a little bit of fuel left on the other side of the tank from the fuel tap.
We used to lay down the bike on the tap side, so any fuel trapped in the low part on the other side would flow over into the tap side of the tank.
Depending on the model of bike, we got up to 10Km of precious extra fuel, which was always enough to get to a supply.
The STANDARD tank on the XR650R is probably the WORST offender of trapped fuel that I have yet come across.
On the ''other side'' resides 1.5 litres of trapped fuel !
The normal reserve capacity measures 1.2 litres.
This is where the Average rider would ''run out''.
Unknown to him there is still even more ''reserve, reserve'' left at his disposal.
I realise the majority of you would know this already.....sweet, but many mature riders I have have spoken with in recent years, have not had this basic grounding.
If this information helps anyone at any time to extricate themselves from a situation it is worth the post.
Thanks Guys....PIG on :Punk:
I will be putting this post up on USA sites too, as our Pigs are always being slated for small fuel range.
I have never found any mention of this peculiarity on their sites.
