haven't found any on mine... yet...

however i did have a 750/4 that would get a couple more every time you did the tappett service, maybe it's an air cooled honda thing

i think its a beer thing.....
normally half way through a doz putting it back together and ya get a bit over zealous on the bolt tightning into alloy:laugh:

Why a later year one when they're all the same bike? Mine's early but the guy i got it from fully rebuilt everything, motor, running gear, the lot.

I've seen them advertised cheaper than what i paid, and later model. But i'm confident in my machine and the condition it's in (note, the confidence doesn't extend to my off road riding talent however)

My point is, why not look for one that's been looked after, or seen little use?

Its more a case of finding one that hasn't done a huge milage.
I was hoping that later year = less mileage
If I found a good low km that was older I would not have any problem buying it.

actually due to the crappy cam design on them they tear their own threads out, hence why most honda 4's look like they have a blown head gasket, it's the cam runners coming loose and oil dripping down between the cylinders. Spinny but you can see between the cylinders on them.

:D

I scored a kx500 off trademe late one night "was cheap" - kicked that sucker so many times in my warehouse gumboots had to
soak my foot in the waimak to reduce the swelling.

Upshot - stuffed crankseals - had motor recond - only for head gasket to blow - permatexed that - now using water - think
needs waterpump kit - never really had good run out of it in all the years had it - hopefully this time

These days - no matter how tempting if a bike is not low hours or K's its the big Forget it !

you know i disagree, a bike may only have say 10,000k on it, but if it's never had an oil change it's air filter cleaned or the valves adjusted it will be f**ked.
Look for something that has been maintained to a high standard and as such these big singles will last if you keep on top of everything.

But if you get one at 10,000 km that has been well maintained you are even better off than having one that has done high mileage
and been well maintained.

agree with both of you:confused:
i dont mind high KMs the problem is nowing the history, the last owner might have been awesome with maintenence but the owner before him might have kaned the shit out of it with no servicing.
bit of a coin toss with some bikes. my piggy had some bad maintenence from PO's and some muppet inside the head, but now its rebuilt i;ll do the right things so she'll still be a goodie for the next owner, if there is a next owner... these pigs are hard to part with.
best thing about the XR is they are easy to rebuild and parts are plenty from the states

Just bought a 97 xr400r with 2000km and reg on hold. its in fantastic condition and original down to the tyres and looks like it has never been off road.

Anyway I rode it around the block and then started dismantling it. Have gone through and replaced all the fluids and oil filter and strainer, cleaned out the carb(it was remarkably clean) and put in 160 main and 60 pilot, ground the header pipe welds(which are now at the polishers getting cleaned up), have ordered some pro taper bars in my favorite bend along with some 28.6 bar clamps and some hand guards. Also have coming a devol bash plate and new o-ring and sprockets for good measure.

This week I will grease the linkages and steering stem as well as the swing arm pivot(which i checked that it turned before i bought the bike) which can be a major as they seize in the cases. Then i will change the fork oil.

Anyway my question is has anyone replaced the stock(restrictive) metal air filter cage with a plastic unifilter one and if so where did you get it?. I know they make them but all the American sites just list the unifilter.

Cheers

put some highway pegs on the piggy the other day.... looks a bit out of place but fark it works well, many suitable positions to work around the Sciatica and sore butt on the long highway jaunts.
also put a pack of those uni air box vents in... made a difference with the low end bog and a little crispier with the throttle and a little better with the top end pull:msn-wink: . cant afford the pumper carb or hot cam yet so im rapped with a $20 improvement:headbang:

Anyone know please the sprocket combo you can run on the xr650r so you can run the largest possible rear sprocket for trail riding but when you want to run smaller rear sprocket for road riding you can do so without removing chain links ? Thanks

Anyone know please the sprocket combo you can run on the xr650r so you can run the largest possible rear sprocket for trail riding but when you want to run smaller rear sprocket for road riding you can do so without removing chain links ? Thanks

I run a 13/48 combination for trailrides that takes the rear wheel back to the 2nd to last notches on swing arm, rest of the time swap back to 14/48 combo...no need to change rear sprocket and chain length...with the XR's torque 13/48 will easily get you up any trailride hillclimbs. With 14/48 combo bike will do 150kmph...how fast you want to go?
Hope this helps
NB: For my supermoto setup I run 15/45 which is same chain length

dino3310
11th May 2013, 17:51
one thing i luv about the BRPs is the range of the torque , i can run from a 51 down to a 40 (48 stock for the 6) i run out of pull in top gear with 15/40 but ive already hit 150 in fourth :chase:

Ta for good info - Is this all with the stock 110 link chain ?

Read running the 13 is hard on chain slider wear, and if doing a lot of whoops etc over time starts to eat into the swingarm (Which is apparently hard to see, lye on your back material and look up) Suppose not seeing same action trail riding - have you noticed any abnormal wear running 13 front ?

I've done approx 30,000km on my XR's never had to replace chain sliders, as long as you keep good chain tension should be fine...not sure of number of links in chain, makes me dizzy trying to count them

The great thing about xr400's is that they are simple and reliable, forced induction would end that. Kinda cool though!

Anyone have a clarke or ims tank to suit a xr4 also a quiet end cap to suit standard muffler(ballads or b&b)?

changed the jetting around on the pig today... after the rebuild a couple of years ago i went from stock jets up to the scott summer one's 155/68 and it still felt a little restricted so today i put in 160/70 i figure with the O/S slug, airbox mods and the open sorst it needed more juice.... well fuck me it worked pulls harder than a school boy now, i even managed to get the front up in 2nd and 3rd with the highway gearing, seems to start/idol better to.:headbang: speedo only goes to 150 and it pulled to that so im happy

madmartin
15th July 2013, 20:59
150... are you breaking the law??:nya:

haha, my piggie does an indicated 160, i'm sure it's nowhere near accurate up there but those sort of speeds on the dirt and you forget about all the times you been lying under it on a firebreak:crazy:

dino3310
15th July 2013, 21:08
kinda funny how i want to make it go faster when i'll probably never be good enough to ride it to its full compatibility anyway's , but then i guess if its a straight line your mates on a RM ringing its tits off at 120-130 and ya give him a wave as ya blast past him is worth it:2thumbsup

i do agree it a bit spendy, $4.5k would be better and still not cheap. but theyre getting harder to find in original tidy form.been looking at the 650r's cropping up on tradme lately, pretty good buying, the bloke i sold mine to flicked it for $3.5k road legal...cheap!

Get yaself a 16tooth front for massive top speed fun..........nothing like reeling in 450 MXers at ruapuna on the main straight on the 650. 180kph was the best I ever saw they just hit a brick wall.

madmartin
5th September 2013, 21:26
that was the 16 tooth you gave me, machined down from the NV650 if i remember correctly?

I've finally got the front brake caliper mount, tires fitted, got another chain, still trying to sort out a chain length that will give me both dirt and motard options without changing the chain though, there's too many links in my chain for the motard set up with the 15/48 combo i use on my dirt wheels (that's running a 15 tooth front sprocket and the 43 you gave me with that rim)

It might be a pipe dream, but i'd like to be able to interchange the two and not break my chain every time

Been trialing some highway pegs on the pig this year, had them semi attached with pipe clamps, had some time yesterday and made a couple brackets and mounted them, only a couple of minutes to on/off them so on the longer trips i can take em of for the rough stuff and chuck em back on for the long haul home.
incase your wondering ive bolted it to the bash plate cause if i have an off it will just rip of the bashplate alloy and not the frame. love useing them on the road, hang ya feet out like a fat harley rider(must look a little silly but wgaf), fantastic for when the sciatica kicks in just kick back and stretch

Question for youz guys.

I've put my XR back to dirt trim before i blow the poor thing up as a 'tard.

Has anybody tried 13/45 gearing?

I"ve got 15/45 and 14/45 but I'm looking for something to compensate for my total and utter lack of talent when it comes to climbing hills. It seems the 13 tooth front sprocket is available but chain slider might cop a fair bit.

I use 13/48 for trailrides...14/48 for adventure rides and 15/45 for Motard...all work fine on same chain length...never had any issues...I've read that using the smaller front sprocket will wear the chain faster given it has a tighter radius to turn but who knows or cares!

Awesome, thanks for your input Matt. Looking at the rear sprocket i thought i was pushing it to get a 48 rear on there. What's it like at highway speed with the 13/48? Will it do 100k without stressing things too much?

I assume by the same chain length you mean 120 links?

Sorry have never counted the chain links, can do if necessary, will easily sit on 110kmph with 13/48 but I usually only use that gearing for farm rides etc for hillclimbing ability.
I thought 48 rear was pretty standard?

Funny you should ask, new yank owner leaves the country 19th January but I have already sold it for him to a guy in Tauranga who called after I had sold it...Tauranga man is apparently going to drop him to airport so all worked out grand for current owner!

was a few years ago but im pretty sure i did or mabe that was the time i went the wroung way first and turned around at lake tennyson- im not a fast rider but i do think my bike was a bit thistier then it shoud have been. didnt get much over 300km from the 24 l tank

mine was tapped out at 160 on all the straights, we took the bikes to the end of the road on the ute too. Think it's 110k down the rainbow but i have been wrong once before. I thought that was quite fair fuel economy for how far open i had the throttle

No plans to at this stage - pig hasn't been fired up in months, looking to fit 49 tooth sprocket scored
and get into doing some single track riding - have a good blast and hold it on :headbang:

Yeah still flying the sole piggie flag :D

Think with the whale tanks sitting so much more proud just more room for impact where the bars would normally take it.

I emptied the standard tank on a Wednesday night ride for a return trip from Christchurch to Duvauchelles - had to lean it over on Moorhouse
ave to get the last lot of drops to get home. Just googled the distance - 155 KM so probably not to bad considering the pig was not hanging around footing it with sport bikes. Recall 15/44 gearing. Found if you can get it sounding like a honda water pump - ticking along, can get 65 MPG plus with 37 mortard gearing. Pretty sure 38 rear low as you can go on standard rear rim.
