a DR650 better value? (i'm on the fence which bike to progress to, wanting something that can do a light tour and gravel road bash, perhaps the DR? though like the fairing of the KLR)

madmartin
10th July 2014, 15:24
you're not gonna wanna tour on an XR650R, the seat is not at comfortable for distance. I've not had first hand experience with the DR or the KLR, but both would probably make a better bike for use on the road. Buy an XR if you want big tree pulling torque, and silly make you grin power, but not if you wanna tour the country

cynna
10th July 2014, 17:04
thats a xr650l and not r

different bike and seat looks comfier but its not on lams list although you can apply i think

the xr650r seat is bearable - there are worse. one guy did the dusty butt on his two up and rode down from up north somewhere. but yeah for that price you can get a new dr

cynna
10th July 2014, 17:05
also might be hard to get a bigger tank for that model as they are not that common

cynna
10th July 2014, 17:10
bored and googling now - just seen that the xr650l is still a current model overseas never new that...... electric start as well. wonder why they dont bring them to nz new - a bit of competition for the dr

I reckon it's a bit much, but that's my Scottish heritage shining though. K's are getting up there ( depending on use of course ) keep in mind not many of them always had the speedo connected. Have a good listen to the motor or get it checked over before your mate parts with his cash. In saying that now i look closely at the photos it looks bloody immaculate. I think this guy can justify his asking price, he's looked after it.

I paid 5k for mine, it had been fully rebuilt. New everything. I had the rims straightened and brought a big tank (25 litres was a mistake). All I've ever done since is service it and replace stuff I broke crashing it. I got lucky buying mine, but they're a fantastic bike and I'd never sell it

fridayflash
8th November 2014, 14:23
thanks martin, i got mine for 3k and it had done 16,000 kms but as you say...speedo may have been off for a time, my rims needed straightening too!

carjam was interesting, 5 different plates over the years, bit of a flat spot in the kms the last few years, prolly sitting around to long with shite oil then fired her up and cooked her. frames tidy so kms look about right with how tidy she is.

one thing ive found with XRs is a lot of fellas treat em like a road bike with there service intervals, and oil changing an XR at 5000kms or more ain't gonna give the motor longevity

I pulled the trigger and bought an XR650R.
I have enjoyed tidying it up for the last few months.
I have taken it up the street for a blast or two just to scare the neighbors and will re-register it soon for summer.
I am looking for an aftermarket tank to extend the range.
I am after something like a IMS 4.6.
Keep an eye out for me will ya.
If anyone is up for a bush ride around Taupo, contact me please.

Mate, go for the smaller tanks, in my experience the bigger you go the more top-heavy your bike will become, 15 to 17 litres is the go i reckon. My bike has a mind of it's own with the 25 litre on it... this is a reflection of my lack of riding talent obviously, but who really needs 400km of range?

Is it the design of the tank as well as the fuel? Could you not just half fill it..?

madmartin
25th November 2014, 18:59
full it's just too heavy off road, you can put stuff inside the tank that deals with the slosh factor when they're half full, but in hindsight i should've got a 15litre one

Have you heard of this "tank foam"?
It stops fuel sloshing around in the tank
It only takes up 1% of the volume and lasts 15 years...

I agree about the huge 6.2 or 7 US gallon tanks being too big.
For the one or two times a year they are useful, they are too much tank for 99% of your riding
The IMS 4.6 is twice the capacity of stock but doesn't look much wider.
I guess its the way its shaped to fit into the frame that gives the extra capacity.
If I have a slosh problem I will use the above foam.:niceone:

The Acerbis 25L tank is awesome.
Whether it was full or nearly empty, it made NO difference to the XR's rideabilty.
"Top heaviness", or "fuel slosh" are just naive Knitters' imaginations running wild.

bit pricey i think...still keeping an aye out for a decent one for my brother..slim pickens lately

This is about what they are going for lately on Trade Me, in fact usually about $6k for one with a "live plate"
I have seen one a few months ago on at $7K and remember thinking "you are bloody dreaming" as it was nothing special..... only for it to disappear off the listings a week later. Presumably sold.

When I returned to NZ 4 years ago a good BRP was $4500. They are definitely appreciating in value.
I was in the Honda dealer in Hamilton last week and the manager was lamenting the fact that Honda was not producing a big bore enduro/trail bike. He said that if they did, "he could sell them all day"
This is another reason why the XR650R will continue to increase in value.
(Also the fact that they are really fun to ride)

fridayflash
14th December 2014, 16:03
perhaps your right, there was a minter on trademe a month ago which in hindsight my brother shouldve pounced on, at $6,500 it was worth iti paid $3500
for mine with road gear and live plate, but then again a mate of mine paid $10,000 for his altho it included an excel set of motard wheels and bigger brakes etc. this time last year there were no less than 6 brp's on trade me but theyre a bit few n far atm sadly

When I did the rebuild a few years ago the only thing I didn't do was the valves so they were on the cards and then I did the old 'while your in there' 😂 and went a 630 slug, hot cam stage 1 so new rockers and chain for the cam, whole top end.
Should be a mint motor after this lot with a bit more oomp

I really rated the XR400's i owned, fabulous dirt bikes and no pesky radiator to smash. As an adventure bike they we a little too stressed on the road for my liking though

in an ideal world I'd have two XR's, one with the 'tard wheels and the other set up for mis-adventure riding.

As it is once i do the swap over it tends to stay in one guise or the other for quite a while.

She's a mean motard bike, fast as hell in the twisty stuff but I tend to push it a tad too close to the limits... It's not gonna end well one day. Logic dictates that I should keep the big knobbly tires on her and I might live longer

This has probably been thrashed to death in the past 108 pages but what tires do you recommend for the XR for NZ conditions.
I have to re-VIN my bike so they need to be road legal.
I plan to ride about 50/50 road and off road.
Looking for something that will handle adventure rides like the 42nd Traverse and will give reasonable mileage/longevity on road.

What do you recommend?

madmartin
16th August 2015, 20:14
I run knobblies, the front is something staggeringly unimpressive, the back a Pirelli MT21, had a few of them. Current one has probably done 2000k and has no grip at all in the gravel now. It's a trade off really, either you change tyres often and run knobblies for off-road grip or you fit a dual purpose tyre that lasts, grips well on the road, but isn't as good on the dirt.

In saying that i've struck more than a few hills i haven't managed to climb because the MT21 has clogged up with mud, while riders with more talent and less dirt orientated rubber have ridden merrily past...

I have been looking at MT21's and D606's...

Dino, where do you buy your tires from?
I work in Hamilton Monday to Friday just down the road from Boyds. I was in there last week looking at tires. Where else is worth looking at in the Tron?

What about the online places?

Have you ever been stopped by the cops and had them give you a ticket for "off road use only"
tires?

i get the rear shinkos from here http://www.bits4bikes.co.nz/ab4btyres/shinko-dual-sport-tyres/2681.aspx
AC10's i get from where evers selling them cycletreads trademe etc there normally around $95.

dont buy from local shops, my budgets tight since buying the house so i just look for specials on line.
theres Hamilton Honda in town and the one across the road from boyds, MV in morrinsville have got a good rep.
actually come to think of it there fuck all for bikes in hamilton.

no problem with these tyres there DOT rated, although i do run mx tires from time to time but havent been pulled over with them yet, even when i have been pulled over they havent bothered with tires.

Shinko244 rear- mitchy AC10 front

On the KLR run 244 on the front and Mitch T63 on the back, very impressed with the 63 its even ok on a wet road, something the AC10's on the WR are not, but would say AC10 best agresive Dot tire and fine in the dry if a little lumpy riding

Ac10 is a waste of coin for a rear on an XR it would last about 2 seconds, on the front its mint

7000 grand and still not at reserve...... if only they made a new version with electric start

"Real men do not need an electric leg"

If The King Of Baja had an electric leg it would only aid
in leaning it towards being another bloated overweight
wrong kind of pig.

Lightweight monster power helps to make it what it is, A Legend !

Tractionator HD/HT found to be best all-round tyre
Good chunky knobblie for the front to help control
front end that carries weight.
More wrestling of front end required on tar than T63
Longest lasting tyre ever run on XR650R
Stiffside wall so can run low pressure offroad
21 on front 18 pounds on back seems good
on tar for handling and longgevity

T63 prob best tyre for gravel ever run
but do not last long on tar even though handle well on it - shocking on mud

Seen others run M21's and go great on tar - but last easily half the
mileage than the tractionator.

Hi, I'm after an XR650R for adventure riding. I've got a TT500G but doesn't really have the legs on the road for the company I'm likely to keep. Also despite the huge reliability of the old TT it is a 36 yr old bike so would prefer to use for shorter, closer to home events and rides. Also keen to be able to trail ride the XR. Thanks.

Well my XR400 has done 21000 ks & the engine cases show no where near as much wear....plus the other garks & scratches.Looks like a bit of oxidation on the motor plus he has replaced (good on him too) a fair bit which leads me to believe that the previous owner didn't look after it that well & the seller has tidied it up.
If the oil changes wernt regular ( they have a small volume of oil) then that can cause issues down the line.
So apart from what Ive mentioned I think it is still worth looking at...

Tracked down this 650 that had been in a shed for the last 6 years. Owner had used it mostly for road riding with CBR wheels so original wheels/discs are mint. 22000km. He'd bought it off a mate of mine who was a honda dealer (now KTM) back then so probably went riding with him when he had this one. I recall he commented it had heaps of grunt but didn't like to stop off road! Changed all the fluids, new tyres and swingarm linkage bearings and she's on the road. Bloody rego for a 650 bike is criminal compared to cars. I guess we cost alot to fix when some car has flattened us .............. Stand and oversize tanks, Pro Circuit pipe.
Went for a blat around Ruapuke and coast rode to Raglan and it went sweet. Comfortable at 100kmph with grunt to pass left but after 130km my butt was over it - might have to sort a better seat or a sheepskin or gel. Continental TKC's are great but I'm probably going to get about 500km out of the rear!!!

Thanks. There must be a few more kicking about in someones shed? Just back from overseas and it's a bit colder than when I left but great to get out on it again. Unfortunately I was away later than I'd hoped and missed a 3 day ride with some guys from Whangarei who have some favourite tracks up there. I put some 80/20 adventure tyres on as the road ones were old as the hills and I wanted a little bit of dirt tread in the event I ended up on some gravel and didn't have my offroad wheels on. They are great but I ain't no road rider. About a month back I went over to Kawhia on it with my brother who has an MT-01. Great ride. Must do the Old Mountain Road to Raglan soon too.

Anybody got some info?

dino3310

as far as i know they are almost or are identical, the early NX's had kick start as well as the lecky leg, which can be mated to the later XR650l's.
i think the NX gearing was slightly different and with a longer 5th.
it is the XR650L you're talking about? as the XR650r was a total redesign and different from any other XR, such a shame as they were rated as one of if not thee best 650 donk made

I have only just looked at the website for the fitting time ever due to maybe parting with my big red pig.
I hope im not breaking any rules by posting my bike here as i have no idea what its all about,
Any way here goes, 2002 XR 650. Has been warranted and road rego before so fitted with blinkers break lights n things.
15,000 km always garaged road geared at the moment.
Rego on hold.
Beautiful condition only normal rub marks on foot peg area.
1 owner.
Im not a great forum/ web page person so email or txt / phone would be best.
Thinking of trademe it but at the right price im ok with doing the deal before i do that.

Hi folks

I recently brought an 03 XR650R into the country but am finding it is not possible to register here as doesn't have the right frame stamp to say it complies with NZ safety standards.

My only option now is to get dispensation from NZTA (not holding my breath) or swap the frame for an NZ one.

Does anyone know where i could find a frame?

cheers

Yep, welcome to my world. Think I saw your post on facebook. My brother is in the same situation with a BRP that came from the US. Originally sold as trail model so no way it can get registered in NZ. Really annoying as it's identical to my 03. I've been trying to track down a wrecked one for a year or so - thought I'd found a stolen/retrieved but owner was going to rebuild.
Of course NZTA want $180 just to receive your application but I wouldn't hold my breath on an outcome - if you get lucky let me know.

10.5K?? No wheel options? No oversize tank? Surely a high output stator?? Don't mean to be disrespectful but this bothers me - it just drives prices up unrealistically. For 6K more you can be into a 690 or 701. My '03 owes me 5K and I think that is realistic. Clarke tank, CBR and factory wheels. More miles but that's no biggy on a BRP.
But good on you for having a crack I guess.

Was your XR650R the motard that was listed up on TradeMe not long ago?

Nah. Bought mine privately a few years ago and I'm being buried with it.
