100+ demerits

I've managed to aquire 90 demerits for speeding over the last (nearly) two years, the first hit of 50 was got sometime in May '05. Anyway, today I got busted at 127 on SH16 near Wellsford. Does anyone know the exact timing of when the demerits count from? If I take the full 28days to pay the fine, will that mean the demerits won't be added till after the first 50 have gone past the 2 years? What is the sequence of events from here on? Moved here from the UK 3 years ago, so don't know the system that well, in the UK, a court appearance would be required at this point. Knowing the practical, efficient 'kiwi way' I'm guessing it's all done automatically here!

The demerits are added the day you pay the fine. That is when it is taken as an admission of guilt. You have 28 days to pay, and then if the fine isn't paid you will receive a reminder with a further 28 days to pay. Make sure you pay before the expiry of the reminder period or the additional penalties can add up quite rapidly.

If the total of 56 days isn't enough for your first lot of demerits to expire, then send in a letter saying you wish to have the case heard in court. You can expect an additional $130 in court costs, but by the time the case comes to court you should be able to extend the time by another couple of months.

I have a sneaky suspicion that it's the date of offence that's important. Yes we know the demerits (is that really a word?) actually hit your licence on the date of payment but their effectiveness is back-dated to the date of offence.

Therefore if you commit 100 points worth of offences within 24 months you will have to walk for some months.

Sucks that the speed limit is only 62.5 doesn't it?

Could it be that your older points were added in May but the offences actually took place in March/April?

Cos the cops in the UK aren't so anally retarded and are out solving real crime. Motorways no copper would bat an eye-lid up to about 140. Normal roads 115 before they get arsey. Also, there's a LOT of motorways and dual cabbageways (basically just motorways). Finally, there's few cops on UK roads, just the wonderful speed cameras. Driving here is slooooooooow

geez, it's like you're me!
in late 2004 we came back from 4yrs in the UK,and got nabbed at 80mph within the first 3mths = 50pts.
back in Jan got nicked at 125, = another 35pts. told my UK mates and they just laughed at the NZ HP.

riding in the UK was great! no-one does 70, not even rozzers. A roads were wikkid, and generally in better nick than NZ's. On our first ride back in NZ, we couldn't believe how bumpy the roads were - guess we'd forgotten.

The date that counts when it comes to points being added and rolling off is the date of offense, not the date of payment.

The relevant processing will be done by LTNZ once you pay the fine, or two months after the ticket was issued if you haven't paid (ie, at the point it's sent to Court for collection), but one way or the other, if you commit offenses within a two-year period that cause you to accrue 100 points, bye-bye licence. Conversely, you don't have to worry about waiting to pay the fine if the dates of the relevant offenses were more than two years apart but the points are still showing on your licence.

I know this for sure because in October last year, I escaped going over 100 points (in spite of the ginga cunt on SH16's best efforts) by 4 days grace. I had a detailed conversation with LTNZ on the subject at the time.

Much cheaper than Brands Hatch track days.

Yeah - normal motorway speed was 80mph. 128kph. you never got annoyed for that speed.

If you over took on the left - you got your arse felt by the cops.
If an articulated vehicle was in the rightmost lane (the fast lane) - they got their arse felt by the cops.
If you sit in the middle lane without overtaking anyone - you got your arse felt by the cops.

With that dangerous behaviour out of the way it is feasible to have higher speeds and if someone overtook you IT WAS NOTHING PERSONAL..I still believe that people who accelerate while being overtaken should be jailed for attempted murder - but that's just me.

A veritable paradise on Earth it must be. Except --- I do remember the adventures of the erstwhile Sir Benjamin Bentley-Benz, Master of the Rolls, Lord of Via Tertius. Before your time I imagine, perhaps things have changed.

I didn't exactly have an exemplary record in the UK either! Personal best being 141mph, as recorded by Gwent(South Wales) Constabulary ( I was slowing from about 160mph at the time)

The UK isn't the riding nirvana others on this thread are making it out to be, true, much less 'in person' police presence on the roads, but WAY more cameras! Roads may be in (slightly) better nick, but much, much busier.

Cage drivers are however, much more aware of bikes, it's become to be the norm for cars to move slightly left when a bike approaches from behind.

I wouldn't go back if you paid me though!
