    Nahhh

You want a DR-Z400SM like mine mate. I'm getting 100km to reserve and the seat is like a plank. Seems to run out of puff at $120 on the speedo. Perfect for long touring all day two up with lots of bags. And it's got two trip meters. Luxury mate, luxury.

Felix: if ya want another Hornet mines going pretty cheap. Known quantity and all that.

MD, re the tank range sure is impressive. What I am thinking thou is that the F800 is around 18~19k, and if I can get a SD for like 20k but with WP suspension all around standard then perhaps it is a better deal? I know a lot of the these bike are better than the sum of its parts, so yes only a test ride / ownership will show tell. May I ask about the servicing cost of the F800?
Some good & honest replies from DMNT & Dazza
Felix- The Wgtn shop has a new F800S for $17,400 (non-ABS)
Service costs are dirt cheap. The only full service I have needed so far cost $174. That's pretty bloody good.
The others have more up market suspension. But, you have said you don't ride hard, therefore you don't need race track quality suspenders. So many people mouth off about having this and that top performance parts but they ride slower than most Grandmas..just posers. Pointless paying extra for something you wont use. The beemer is a case of the whole performance being greater than the sum of its parts.
DMNTD made a good comment, the SD is a ripper of a beast but may be overkill for your needs.
If you have a faired CBR954 then that weather protection box is ticked and you can go with a completely naked Duke or S/triple..or Multistrada or..Moto Morini or ...so many choices, and have the full 1000cc at you disposal and a mental bike up your sleeve. Keeps coming back to what do you want it for? Sounds like DMNTD got exactly what he was looking for in the Duke..a hooligan.
It would be good to see a comparison test of all the nakeds. When I'm riding the F800 it feels fast and that's all that counts for me - the smile factor.
I'm curious how much quicker the others would be to the F800?
A detailed test like straight line runs, roll on and measured speeds around a set bend. The yank magazines are really good at that level of testing. Flame & I dragged raced her RSV1000 vs F800 and she got about 3 bike lengths ahead at Manfield ( I think?). In the big scheme of things, on real roads, that's all irrelevent when you add in bends, wandering stock, traffic and cops...

    Thanks for the detailed reply

I want something that is different to the CBR954, Don't want no crouch rocket as I have one. It needs to be different style to the CBR, so that I can switch between. I like chasing the sports bikes in the twisties, like how I use the hornet. I am looking for something as fast as the 900 Hornet, handles better (I upgraded the Hornet with Ohlins shock and all). Can carry a few bags (I am sure I can coherse the Duke to do that). And easy to ride, plus lots of fun while doing it if its the ride to work or going for a long trip.

Yes I was just at Experience BMW and sat on a yellow F800S, it does feel good and has nice seats. It it too similar to the CBR? maybe.... but too soon to tell.

Is it slower than a 900 Hornet? maybe?

Does it handle better than a standard Hornet? Most likely

Does it carry a few bags? Yes it does.

Easy to ride everyday bike? not sure.

"It would be good to see a comparison test of all the nakeds." I just saw one recently on the net, will dig it up and share. But it didn't include the duke.

And yes the servicing cost does sound quite low, and probly much lower than the Superduke's servicing cost. I have been quoted 5xx dollars for the major service that happens every 14'000km.

I've ridden a 900 Hornet over the local hill and without a doubt the F800 is quicker. Of course, I would say that.

yea talk is cheap. Lets ride the bikes.... looks outside.. "rain" ermmm.

quite a few bikes have hidden talents, e.g sum of it is more than its parts. Which will not be apprent to the tire kicker. Hence its great being able to mine MD's brain.

of course you would, and I am inclined to believe.

Here is a great review about the F800.

    Question MD,
1.) Have you had problems with the bike cutting out? (some on f800 forums reported it)
2.) How do you find the forks? Too soft or just right for NZ roads? I weight 72kg.

Oh shit, that's a womens bike site! Now I will have to sell it %#@& Thanks Felix, do you want to buy mine?
    1. I've not had any mechanical probs, runs flawlessly. As I said on the other thread. BMW had issues with a batch of earlier bikes made where the ceramic on the spark plugs was breaking off apparently. Only a small number effected. In June 07 they made a recall to replace the plugs on bikes that may have faulty plugs. The Owners forum are guessing this is why some owners, and I mean a small number, had cut out problems. I was contacted this week to bring mine in for new plugs. Free plugs, I wont say no.
Forks are spot on for our roads.
Bugger it is so cold and wet today. I have been meaning to take the local shop's 07 SuperDuke demo out for a spin.

Dont worry you wont see that on DMNTDs Duke, the Aprilia can carry all our luggage makes me Shurpa Girl.
Yes the small tank is a pain, but at least it gives the rest of us a chance to catch up. Will be interested to hear your review on both, excuse my ignorance but I take it the BMW is a v-twin also?
