USMC is a self sufficient rapid deployment force.. we have our own Infantry, heavy weapons, armor, air force and our own dedicated ships in the US Naval fleet, including submarines and Fast Attack ships. we also have our own logistics division within the battallion.
we can be deployed anywhere, any time, within 24 hours WITHOUT the need for the president to inform anyone.
the US Army Rangers are a job specialization.. they do not have an air, armor or naval contingent ( although they can be inserted via amphibious assault/ landing and can call in air/ armor/ heavy weapons support).. the president must inform Congress BEFORE he can deploy them ( or any Army/ Air Force/ Naval group)
US Marines can specialize and become Marine Rangers, but to become a Marine, you must go through the boot camp/ training..
US Marines can swap services ( to Army/ Air Force/ Navy) without the need to do Boot Camp. any services wishing to swap to the USMC must go through the USMC Boot Camp.
and Marines have cooler uniforms
So the Rangers is nothing to do with Yogi Bear then ? One lives and learns.
How did the Marines get the Congressional non-approval thing?

An interesting factoid I found out is that the USMC go back to 1775: much longer than I had thought.
Plus there is that USMC reputation for being double hard bastards.

Land, Sea, Air man .. first in, last out ..
but in NZ .. all ya really need is Humanitarian aid , Coastal Defense and S&R..a few SAS-type teams for the C/T roles and hostage rescue situations
coastal defense you can sort out with a few USCG patrol boats/ Cutters and some Exocet missile systems .. Humanitarian Aid ya need a few of the new C117's like they had at the air show and maybe a couple big choppers
get the SAS to train the cops for national defense and its sorted ...
oh .. and give the cops guns ...and bullet proof vests ...
I agree with this entirely: Sidearm and ballistic vests, PROVIDED they get the training, and retraining, to use them properly. And shotguns (one per car).
Also, decriminalise marijuana, and assume that ANY drug related call will devolve into this scenario, send in properly equipped, properly armed people.
Jesus Christ, do our police senior officers not watch "Cops" FFS!
I mean I'm this fat balding middle aged specky twat, but if a policeman was to say to me "SHOW ME YOUR HANDS! GET ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW OR I WILL TASE YOU" then instead of being lippy, and no matter how innocent I was (and am) you bet your ass I am getting on the ground....
I digress..
