If you do have access to some off road/adv style route charts i'd love to get hold of them one weekend, mabye start a thread including them.
I am planning on putting a couple of routes together for Nelson based rides which may be able to be incorperated into the DB1k route next time it's back this way.

Are there any others planing on doing the 1day DB1k10? I havent decided yet, will depend if the missus can make it down on the mighty SL.

on a postie "fast" is extremely relative....

As an example of a roll chart have a look at the one for the northern DB1k route from here. The PDF download link is in the first block of text below the map. This is my very first attempt at putting one together but it has been revised over three years of using the route. The one I've put together for the souther run is a bit more descriptive with bridges/fords/buildings/hedges shown where they are useful for navigation.

The typical roll chart holder is the 0.9l or the 0.6l click clack box. If I remember right they are getting hard to find though (had trouble getting one last year). I used a small electrical box last year with threaded rod as the rollers. See here for a page with details on an option.

Be warned the Southern DB1k roll chart is a little bit longer than the Northern DB1k one and there wasn't much room to spare with the Northern roll chart. Definitely get the 0.9l box if you can.

Regarding using them you have to be on the ball with rolling the damn thing forward and watching you trip meter at the same time. Some of the turns are 20kms appart so if you muck it up there is a lot of back tracking. They are easy in concept you just need to stay on the ball. On the Southern DB1k page I've drawn the route onto topomaps (these will be updated after the prerun if necessary so you might not want to print them just yet). Take a copy of these with you in your back pack if you are worried about navigation as a back up to help you get going again.

Not quite, not log now I hope
Been giving Js one a bit of a workout lately doing the Tagorama, mostly on blacktop though.
Don't worry, I'll be anouncing to the world when I'm back with my own knobs on!!
I predict visits to Lees Valley and Bossu Rd in the near future. My favourite roll chart also takes us up to Bossu and eventually round to Akaroa for lunch, a very long way to go though.

    Pre Run - Labour Weekend

Plans are progressing for the labour weekend pre-run. As said in the first post this will be a slower ride cause I will have to stop and write notes on the roll chart every now and then. It will be a good sociable/scenic ride if that is more your thing rather than the higher kms days (1 or 2 day) of the DB1k itself. Also it will probably be a bit more technically challenging cause conditions will probably be much muddier.

The idea at this stage is to stay overnight in Fairlie on the 23rd of October (we will probably travel down from Chch on Friday evening). Saturday will be through Mackenzies/Haka Pass, Danseys Pass, Old Dunstan 1 Track (eastern portion) to Lawrence area (maybe camp up at Ruralmans?). This will be about a 420km day which will probably take about 10/12 hours at a cruisy pace. We (chch people) need to get this much out of the way on the Sat so we can get back to Chch on the Monday.

Sunday will be Lake Onslow, Hawksburn Rd, Nevis (both ways), Carrictown Track to Cromwell. This will be about 420km and will probably take about 8/10 hours. We will probably find a spot/cabin at the motor camp.

Monday will be Thompson Gorge (rise and shine Rd), Omarama Saddle, Black Forest Station back to Fairlie. This will be about 300km which will take about 7/9 hours. I plan to bail back to Chch for the night (couple of hours up the road).

If you keen stick you name on the calender over here.

    Cheers R

Draft roll chart is now on my DB1k SSI page. Only download and use this draft version if you are going to do the pre run because I will be revising this after the pre run for the January ride. This version has been created using computer based maps and my memory of the route so it is bound to have a few errors.

when you get a GPS track of this, will we be able to do the ride using the GPS only rather than the roll chart?

Yup. I'll be making a single GPX file with somewhere between three and five routes with 250 points in each. You will have to change routes (probably at fuel stops) on the GPS partway though the ride. One 250 point route will have no where enough detail for the whole route. I'll do this after the pre-run cause better to do it with a track log than to make it on the PC.
