There used to be a range warning board (with red flag) on the main road north as you leave Parakai. I presume it is still there and used.
A bit of advanced warning that the range is active, if you head up the sealed road...

Well i started this thread and i have got the answer i wanted. Loose the bike park to go ride the bombing range when you can ride lots of other beach's. Its ano brainer for me the bike park and forest wins hands down and if you dont like the whoops learn to ride them better and you'l enjoy it more.
I want to ride everyday...... Fuck work

Haven't read though the whole thread mate but you got it in a nutshell!!
Pretty much as you get better an better you get bored with the bombing range!
I used to go there a fair bit drive my 4x4 ute past the old entrance to the sandpit (blocked off now) and onto the beach and 25 mins up in the ute then unload the bikes near the bombing range.
The sandpit is reasonably priced now and Ktm boy and his crew look after the place better than it has ever been, so there is much more challenge and learning at the bike park.
The other consideration is that if too many ride illegally the future of the bike park might be threatened so there's that as well. Somehow they seem to get the blame for illegal riders just because they are there!
So to sum up in my humble opinion the $25 bucks is well spent!
Keep at the sand mate I've only been riding for just over 100 hours all up and you do get to like the sand! I'm a slow learner so only now managing not to get the front into any hollows at all on the whoops. Its real fun when you can start to skip across the tops at speed. Still freckin hard work though! LOL!!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

you see unlike you he has actually been working to provide events and places to ride that work, idiots like you are what makes it hard for people to get areas to ride.

What really annoys me though is you insulting all those who work to keep places open by deliberately making it hard, so in common with kayne west you are jackass of the week.
    Agreed

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
And now a third thing a bloody big gun to shoot theives with!

I have never hit a bomb up there (yet), surely these days they would make sure the bombs are completely detonated so you only got to worry about old ones. I've watched them before they have firetrucks and all sorts up there. Only ever heard a bomb once and it was big. If they are bombing they usually stop you half way up the beach but you can always double back, head into the dunes and play on them instead of going into the range. If they don't stop you then it is best to stick to the dunes, head up the biggest one that has the view into the range. Look carefully and if there's no one there and the flags aren't up then sweet. Stick to the tracks and you probably won't hit a bomb. Dunes are more fun though...
You are an idiot - my best mate is a armourer in the Airforce and has just come back from 4 days of blowing up a range of bombs last week.....just because you don't see them doesn't mean they are not up there!!

There are two large bombs that have not exploded up there and they do not actually know where they are....on top of that there is other partially exploded ordinants. You are risking your life and others for a joy ride!!!! Some of the parts are not able to be seen until you hit them and by that time kiss your arse and bike goodbye.

I don't care if you want to blow yourself up but FFS it would mean that I would have to pay your ACC cos you are too stupid to even read signs and understand that they are there to protect you.....maybe Darwins theory of evolution about the smartest and fittest surviving is on show here!

    KEEP OUT!!!!!

    Ordnance maybe?

If it was that large a threat, and the NZDF viewed it that way, it would be better signposted.

What about the injuries that occur on horses? Do you pay an ACC on a dirt bike to think of it?

A lot cheaper for ACC to pay for a pink mist than a broken back from coming off into a pine tree......

I said I haven't hit one yet. Tho statistically speaking everytime I go there should be more chance of me hitting one. Although I will be much more careful thanks to random_riders comments, maybe I'll stay out of the range all together and stick to the dunes.

Organized ride? Pfft fuck that shit, I wannna ride when it suits me. They won't let anyone up there because they complain about the 'environment'. Let me ask you a question.

WHAT FUCKING ENVIRONMENT!? I can understand staying away from the terns or whatever I used to be in KCC/Forest&Bird but Its sand FFS, vegetation my ass I don't ride on any vegetation, and eroding the dunes!? This is just a stupid idea that bikes cause the dunes to erode. What about the wind? Everytime I go up there the dunes are slightly different because of the wind. Unless there's a bunch of illegal-riding-metal-muisha-baddasses that take shovels up there. What about the defence force blowing the crap out of the dunes with their bombs? Who's having a whinge at them?

Any tracks on the dunes are gone in pretty much an hour. Dune erosion my ass.

Maybe dunes aren't so fun for some people, if I had a two wheeler I probably wouldn't bother, but different strokes for different folks eh?

I am still to understand the connection between a bunch of seemingly-public-tho-defence-force-owned sand dunes, and privately owned woodhill forest. How would riding on one affect the other? I do not see how riding up there hurts anyone.

Looks like we got some of the Muriwai Beach Bitch Brigade in here too... :P

Btw, I'm sensible riding around people so fuck your stereotype.

Dude you seriously need to get a life! If you keep bagging organised rides one day when you have been caught up there(which will happen) you will go to an organised ride and get told to F*#K off! People with your attitude and obviously low IQ wreck it for everyone else. Alot of us spend alot of our own time to put the effort in to make off road riding in NZ the best we can and idiots like you stand to wreck it for everyone else! you have no idea what effort goes into these rides and what grief we have to deal with because of what the brainless pond scum (just like yourself) do simply because you are not smart enough or socially capable enough to ride at the designated area's and the organised rides. I hope you get caught because morons like you do not deserve a second chance or the benefit of the doubt.
