I don't see what the debate and agro is about. A guy was speeding, he didn't pull over when asked to by the Police, he kept riding, they followed, he crashed and died. End of story. Personal responsibility and all that, he rolled the dice and took his chances, just like all of us do everytime we get on our bikes, unfortunately for him he paid the unltimate price for his decisions.

New Zealand attitudes are really pathetically arrogant and if everyone was like that in "crowded" countries nobody would ever get anywhere!

I learned more about my own behaviour over there and was embarrassed and humbled on many an occasion and had to learn to fit in and go with the flow or go nowhere, it did me a lot of good and I am mild compared to the average New Zealander.

KD, its not that we don't know all the facts. All we really know is that a guy died, and that the cops chased him on the motorway. Once the cops lost sight of him (as soon as he left the motorway), the facts are at the descretion of the media. We seem to be judging him on what he did once the burger fuel employee unit standard of motorcycle speed measurement was used. And for crying out loud, I ride bikes and I can't tell how fast a bike is going when I'm eating a burger.

My point is, every time we read something in the papers on a subject we have personal experience on why see the bullshit flowing from the pages. We all know that facts do not get in the way of the story in NZ papers. Why treat this story with any more credence than any other?

I'm not going to judge the guy on something most of us have done to one degree or another, and certainly not untill the facts are in.

I have ridden over the speed limit in the past, it was a calculated choice I made based on the time, place and risk. It was still wrong and for what it's worth those days are long gone as I have discovered the joys of track riding.

I stand by my words however, anyone who runs from the cops in my mind is an idiot. There can be no other facts revealed that changes my mind.

Not necessarily. When adrenaline has kicked in it's near impossible to slow down. You often hear of people doing runners only to crash kms away far from any real threat.

Yep but we all weigh up risk versus reward. Long country straights, the risk of being caught/causing grief is minimal so we do it. But when risk outweighs reward then it becomes recklessness. Risking your life and others on crowded city streets for the sake of a ticket is where the stupidity comes in. The rest is just statistical probability.

If the guy valve bouncing the engine in his car around the corner outside my house about midnight last night running from the chasing cops had crashed into the pole outside my house and died, I would have called him an idiot.
