I don't see what the debate and agro is about. A guy was speeding, he didn't pull over when asked to by the Police, he kept riding, they followed, he crashed and died. End of story. Personal responsibility and all that, he rolled the dice and took his chances, just like all of us do everytime we get on our bikes, unfortunately for him he paid the unltimate price for his decisions.

As for the gun crime remark, one would think that their insane gun laws are the source of their gun crime, not their system which deals with the aftermath...

We really are impatient arrogant arseholes the way we behave toward one another, especially on our roads and the way we drive our vehicles.
Oh no, couldn't be... Shouldn't we be complaining about "the yanks" attitudes?...

God forbid doing 150 through a township and running from the police should get you called an idiot...

I was pretty surprised to hear that you don't actually go to jail for running from the police the other day, I figured you'd get at least a month or two for it

We seem to be judging him on what he did once the burger fuel employee unit standard of motorcycle speed measurement was used. And for crying out loud, I ride bikes and I can't tell how fast a bike is going when I'm eating a burger.

My point is, every time we read something in the papers on a subject we have personal experience on why see the bullshit flowing from the pages. We all know that facts do not get in the way of the story in NZ papers. Why treat this story with any more credence than any other?

I'm not going to judge the guy on something most of us have done to one degree or another, and certainly not untill the facts are in.

Also, Jim2 hit a nail on the head for me. If the cops lost sight of him getting off the motorway, why was he still going hell for leather at the end of the Newlans road he died on. The newspaper account doesn't add up. There's more to this story.

Oh, and btw, next time your reminising about the last time you did 200+kph out the back of Martinborough, just think what the farmers and their wives where thinking about you? Not many of us are blameless, just not unlucky. (Does that make sense?)
Again good points re the facts and speeding.
I have ridden over the speed limit in the past, it was a calculated choice I made based on the time, place and risk. It was still wrong and for what it's worth those days are long gone as I have discovered the joys of track riding.

I stand by my words however, anyone who runs from the cops in my mind is an idiot. There can be no other facts revealed that changes my mind.

Some would argue that doing such speeds through a residential area isn't the pinnacle of modern morality, either. Same goes for attacking people for calling something like (most) see it

How did he KNOW he had lost the Police?

Most likely (and the most common reason I have heard of) is they just want to get the hell out of the area as they know police radios are going flat-stick and cars are approaching from all over so they hit the back roads figuring no cops will be on them.

Everybody knows the cops don't travel on back roads. It's illegal. They must remain on State Highways at all times

Only State Highways numbered less than 10. That's the unwritten law. I *have* seen cops on >10 SH , but that's just not playing fair. Jolly bad form

Acting like a drongo is a growth activity in New Zealand, it seems Scumdog has picked a winner!

Not necessarily. When adrenaline has kicked in it's near impossible to slow down. You often hear of people doing runners only to crash kms away far from any real threat.

Yep but we all weigh up risk versus reward. Long country straights, the risk of being caught/causing grief is minimal so we do it. But when risk outweighs reward then it becomes recklessness. Risking your life and others on crowded city streets for the sake of a ticket is where the stupidity comes in. The rest is just statistical probability.

Still, I'd rather the guy was "convicted" by fact, rather than the burger fuel test.

If the guy valve bouncing the engine in his car around the corner outside my house about midnight last night running from the chasing cops had crashed into the pole outside my house and died, I would have called him an idiot. If he had crashed through the front of my house I suspect I would want to do more than just call him an idiot.

p.s. if anyone can tell me what that shit was all about let me know
