Restricted test - experiences and advice

Just sat my restricted test, passed WooHoo. Before I went along for it I skimmed through KB to find any experiences only found 1 (Thanks Simpy1 http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...tricted+passed ) So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread for people to throw in their experiences for people about to sit the test.
    So here goes

Browns Bay NSC Friday afternoon nice sunny weather

Tester checks documentation, Licence etc then out to bike, asks to see front and rear indicators, brake light and horn. Then issued with a radio receiver it has an over the ear speaker. This hurts as I put the helmet on and not comfortable when I put it on a second time. A sound check confirms I can hear fine but this is at 0 speed.

When we pull away, me in front and tester following in car the wind noise starts to make hearing a bit difficult so really need to concentrate. When I sit my full I'm going to investigate whether I can wear an in ear piece.

Test itself is really straight forward whizzing around a few junctions traffic light and give way type. Lost him at one traffic light but just pulled over and waited till they cycled green again then continued. Final part was motorway, up to speed zippered into to reasonably heavy traffic so didn't make it above 80. Checking in mirror sees tester on the off ramp. Push helmet to head to hear him shouting "meet you back at the test station" Wind noise had caused me to miss instruction. As it turned out he'd seen enough to pass me so all was good.

Conclusion: Test was nothing to worry about just a scoot round town. If you have a noisy helmet see if you can use in ear pieces or get the volume up a bit more than you think. I do wear ear plugs but didn't use my left ear one I think this would have helped hear the instructions. Take any tools with you that you may need to remove your L-plate when you pass. I didn't and felt heartily pissed off riding with the plate when I didn't need it haha

hope this helps and good luck

Just my luck to take a Swiss Army knife to cut my L plate off and fail

I'll contribute to this thread hopefully in about 6 weeks after I've done my 6R test in Mt Maunganui

On my 6R the head set was blimmin useless. All I could hear was " at krrrr next intersection I'd like you to krrrrrr kkrrrrrrr kkkrrrrrr." In the end I had to watch his indicators to see which way he wanted us to go - however he did comment on how well I was using my mirrors!!!
    Another fine mess.

Great! I have to be able to hear and see. I am a bit dodgy on the eye test part. Do you have to do one at the time of your 6r?

Thanks for this post mate, I'm looking to get legal on a bike here in NZ and appriciate any info regarding this I can get for free. I am looking for what the proceedures are and what they look for in regards to annal retentive issues. I know back in the UK they would fail you for not putting it in nuetral and having you right foot on the brake at lights (Duh?)

I'm hoping the riding tests are as relaxed as the driving tests are here? I sat my restricted and full here and had no trouble passing. Just drove around manukau listening to the tester tell me about what different hakas really meant in his tribe. Sweet!

Any particular things testers look for when testing or is it a case of just making sure you are confident and capable on the road?

    Cheers

Did the tester say anything about not going over 70?

    This is a useful thread.

when i did mine the tester specifically said i was permitted to go above 70 (as long as it wasnt exceeding the speed limit obviously) for the duration of the test only

    that was unprompted too

but im sure it wouldnt hurt to check with your tester if they dont say anything, as it might end up costing you a fail if they decide to get anti

for the person asking about eye test, they should give you one when you book it

    That's what I thought, thanks.

I asked my tester at the start and he said as it was a test the expectation was to drive to the traffic and speed limit. So on a motorway up to 100.

When I goto onto the motorway rush hour was starting, traffic was medium to heavy so I never got above 80 and we (well he was) only on the m/way for 1 junction so I assume they are just looking for confidence getting up to speed, signals and keeping a good distance.

Best of luck for your test

I think the Road Code points out that a 6L rider is limited to 70 km/hr unless under the direction of a test examiner. As the 6R test determines the rider's ability to ride on the open road, you should be expected to ride at up to 100 km/hr at some stage during the test.

I sat my test today and passed. I was so nervous all day but there wasn't really anything to worry about. Luckily the weather cleared up for me. All I had to do was do a couple of U turns at the end of cul de sacs and through a couple of roundabouts, on the motorway for about 30 seconds then back to the place we started.

I did have a bit of trouble hearing the tester, especially on the motorway, but otherwise everything was sweet.

Good luck to everyone going for their licences.

seems a bit silly to me - people who in theory at least have never been 100k on the motorway are suddenly expected to do so / pass a test on it while under scrutiny. if its such an easy thing to pick up (ie, on the day of the test) why bother with the 70k limit in the first place...
