Well it was like this....... I was delirious through lack of food and my judgement was impaired somewhat. No seriously I had had nothing to eat since tea the prior night and my concentration was not what it should have been. Had a few moments that could have beeen nasty before that due mostly to malnutrition. I was going to stop in lawrence so would have got a bite to eat their but me and Umopom decided that I would ride on and meet up again in omakau.

Does anyone believe this???

Also the rut didn't look that deep and I like riding through muddy puddles.

lesson 1....pack enough food and drink to keep you going.
lesson 2....Ride a bit more conservatively when out in the middle of nowhere.

That's a standout image there- would grace any photographic line up. A heap of entertaining documentary pics from the weekend but few that rise to an art form.

They really were nasty at times, kinda steep too in places Mrs Jatz has some loverly bruises from this off. She almost made it through



Geddes rd it was called Uground, according to the AA Otago road sign.

I thought that 2nd section was harder than the 1st as it was a lot longer & dam hard work good to see you not hurt there Mrs Jatz apart from a bit of brusing you will have to get Jatz to give you a good rub with the deep heat

Great ride thanks Ryan. Got back to Auckland yesterday intact and unscratched. We cut back to a 600km one-day DB, omitted the southern loop and Omarama, did Danseys instead of challenge one. Rode back via Lake Coleridge, Lees/Okuku, Rainbow (camped at Lake Tennyson), Wanganui River road and back to AKL.

This being my second partly finished DB means I will be back next year, but more likley on my other steed (WR450). Although, the Tiger and I have unfinished business with Awakino saddle - the Tiger might just have to do one more!

Dusty alright ,AT was running a bit rat shit on the way home -having trouble breathing I think.
Also had to replace the front wheel bearings in Nelson to get a wof ,dont think they would have made it all the way home

I have to admit to one of the drownings - due to being led astray by jezzaNZ (well, that's my excuse anyway).
Highlight for me was the challenge/alternate route over Danseys - 99.999....% of the population don't get to see country like that.

Been camping in Wanaka - just got home. Thanks Ryan & Co for an awesome job well done. Some bits of the std route were challenging enuf for the Transalp on Mitas E07's. Not a good tyre choice for any place wet. Spent a fair bit of time following others and have obviously missed the 'out & in again' for Lawrence on my GPS. Felt like a proper dick Fortunately the JATZ's saved us with a couple of litres of spare fuel and we completed a modified route via Ranfurly Next year I'll dice up Ryans route into fuel stop sections. Fuel up and load up the next section. That will avoid the 200 point limit in the Zumo, and will hopefully make the GPS route a bit easier to follow without 20% of the waypoints getting binned.

Despite the botch up I really enjoyed Sunday. Saturday was a bit out of my comfort level. I don't really enjoy it when it gets into the real gnarley bits - I don't like situations where there is a very real likelihood of drowning the bike or having an off. Got too much $ tied up in my bike to trash it. Maybe I should have got something less pretty...

After seeing what the Saturday water crossings were like I kinda figured that the Omarama crossings would be higher than expected and was going to opt out and head thru Danseys anyway. Glad I did.

Great to catch up and meet some new folks. Roll on next year. Might have to consider something more "suitable" for the job

Maybe get in touch with Whatastoner. He has a tube of foam filter that he could slip over the K&N. We stop so he could change it just out of Cromwell and it was well dirty then i.e. doing it's job. Silly filter placement on those 650 @'s

I agree but that's the beauty of it. Spectacular scenery, "challenging" riding and so remote that bugger all ever go there.

Nest year I won't be so rushed and will have a better sliced and diced GPS file - he says with optimism now.

Thank you Ryan, the DBK1 has to be one of the best rides I’ve ever done, the people I meet where a great bunch of people, I’ll be back next year.
Many thanks to those who helped me with the flat tyre and subsequent crash, got back to Jafaland yesterday and finally got the shoulder checked by the doctor today, small fracture in the collar bone and dislocated AC joint. The pain killers did wonders to get me home.
Seems like there are plenty of photos up already here’s a couple of mine, that’s Rogerh dewatering the KTM640 after it failed swimming lessons 101.
