Here's why so few people get tickets for going too slow.

I was going north in my neenar at about 4.30 today. Neenar? It's blue and yellow, with red/blue lights on the roof. Nuff said.

I radared a car travelling south on SH1 out of Waikuku at 70 km/h. He was coming out of the Waikuku 80 kmh area. Behind him were 11 vehicles, the drivers of 3 of them waved frantically for me to do something about the dude holding them all up.

I whipped around behind the last of the 11, then used the blues n twos to force each of the 11 aside while I went after the car still travelling at 70 kmh, now in a 100 zone.

After creating mayhem to get to him, he eventually stopped, and I got a big mouthful about how I had driven dangerously to catch and stop him, and that I should go catch some burglars or rapists. Yes, pretty much all the shite that I get most days.

After he drove off, $150 poorer, I pondered why I bother, given the criticism I get for doing it, added to the criticism I get for not doing it.

So, should we do it or not?

    Harumph.
Nah he deserved it. Yes I know you guys catch some crap, Ive got a few mates that are cops but have moved off traffic etc. Now they seem to get it from crims and from above.

On another point, what are your thoughts on 70k limit for L platers?? Im there now and if I stuck to 70 I would have been squashed a few times.

    Oh happy day!
If a driver is discourteous enough to tootle along well below the open road limit holding up a queue of increasingly irate road users they should be stung. I would also recommend that they be forced to resit their test, the dawdlers are usually the ones who cross the centre line on corners, fail to indicate & spend more time looking at the person in the passenger seat (wearing a hat) than the road.

Following such drivers I often wonder what their reaction times are like, hazard awareness & general attitude to driving. If they are oblivious to holding up traffic their is a serious rabbit off.

Oh, don't forget to ticket them when they accelerate from 70kmh to 110kmh on an overtaking lane too.

Ticket for going too slow? No such thing.

Surely it is for 'obstructing traffic'?

    ...just saying...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Lets hope the guy who was ticketed hadn't just let a bunch if impatient wankers past a few k's before and a new group of wankers, who seem to have to travel in groups, just happen to start tailgating before a safe place was found to let them pass.

I think you did the right thing. I got a ticket for doing a 115kph in a passing lane because i was sick of the dick in the land rover going slow until passing lanes. (I was driving a car at the time) The police officer asked why i passed when he was doing 100kph at the time. I told him and he just said "So your frustrated" i said well yea. I was going to give him the no body can drive 100kph these days speech and New Zealand roads are frustrating to drive on speech but i had places to be. Since these TV adds and radio adds have come out slower drivers are increasing they think that as soon as they hit 101kph they are going to die or kill. If i was police officer id concentrate on the slower drivers because 1 slower driver makes other drivers pass which is when accidents happen.

If you cant drive at the speed limit then take the dam bus!

    +1
A steady speed can be dealt with easier than trying to get past a driver who has a weight distribution problem when one of the rocks in his head rolls down to his feet at overtaking zones.

Perfect, you are our hero enforcing the other important part of the speed laws.

Now if I could get the in Wellington to encourage drivers to keep left when not overtaking on the motorway we will have reached a new level of nirvana.
    Cheers

....I suppose age has a lot to do with the changing values that occur in the thinking dept;...having lived on SHW 75 for 20+ years and it being my "driveway", I have come to expect the unexpected at all times whilst on it...the GP riders who unless they are trying to actually kill me are just part of the deal...clowns who have a licence to drive but have'nt got the skills to get round corners, whether it be too fast or too slow are more prevalent know than they were...and the slow old couple off for a jaunt in a fairly modern, small jappy or even a newish commodore are pretty much the same as some years back, sometimes you wonder why they didn't stick with the Morry 1100...if you are in a hurry or know that the extra 5 minutes you lose will make you late for that important meeting. they can be very annoying and often elicit extreme profanities and words that would not be acceptable to normal public speaking....anyway, I have found that as I approach an age closer to theirs I have become a little more acceptant of their style of driving...there is a straight bit somewhere in the next few k's and if nothing is heading your way, they are a slow memory in the past....the ones that I believe to be more of a danger are the followers who do not think or have the patience to put it all in perspective and figure out that their tailgating, shunting, dangerous overtaking is a thousand times worse than the slow drivers....predominantly in my part of the world the dangerous clowns are in a 4x4's, have a bunch of kids roped in and are probably only late for an important date with a shopping trolley or are a young male in a ratty old jappy...acting somewhat like me, 40 years ago...

    not EXCEEDING the speed limit

I hope this 70kph character was on/over the centreline, and actually obstructing those behind him - if he wasn't, what was the charge?

Car or bike, the speed limit is the MAXIMUM speed allowed - if I don't want to travel at the MAXIMUM speed, I move over as far as I can (without going on to the shoulder) so that those who DO want to travel faster, can. In my experience, it's the second or third car in the line that is the problem, in this case, a 30km speed difference should be more than sufficient for a competent driver to make a safe overtake UNLESS the road/traffic conditions prevent.

    Most people aren't as courteous

    Target slow drivers!

    *Hobby Horse Alert*

I personally think that the PTB have it all wrong, have done so for many years. They say speed kills, that in itself is not true, it is what happens to you when you stop/lose control that kills you.

Frankly, the number of times I have seen frustrated drivers overtake in the most incredibly dangerous situations, and get away with it astounds me. The reason they got impatient...

A very slow driver up ahead. I really wish more attention was paid to drivers that travel at well less than the open road speed limit targeted and ticketed for inconsiderate driving. Problem is we are still being spoon fed the "slow down" message.

On the open road up here you would be lucky to be able to travel 100 kph at any time. The skill levels of so many road users is appaling. Get off the motorway and woah! Nope, can not go faster than 80, am about shitting in corners at 70.

Where the fuck is plod when that happens?

    Up here...

3 cars, lined up in a layby with a radar aimed at the exit of the tunnels. In the dark, no lights on. Impossible to see. Hauling over drivers that have exited the tunnels in excess of 80kph and issuing infrigements for being naughty. 5 kilometres up the road, drivers are taking undue risks to overtake "MR 65 kph on corners driver" who cant drive for shit! We have so many accidents up here, sadly a few are fatal. Some will be total fool hardiness/piss head driver etc, but I believe some will also be as a result of Mr/Mrs I have never had an accident in my life driver, that simply does not have the skills to be out on our roads.

    Off my soap box now...

going fast (not dangerously excessive) affects no-one else, people going slow hold up everyone else, cause congestion, road rage & bring on stupid passing maneuvers plus you'll generally find they can't drive for shit. They are a danger to everyone you do good to get these people and you should concentrate your efforts on them.

While the driver may not have been happy with you I guarantee those 11 behind would be thanking you for finally ticketing a bad driver & doing all road users a favor, unfortunately tho like always as fines don't work he won't have learnt his lesson but hey at-least he might speed up round cops now
