    Challenge vs main routes....
Watching the list of bikes on the db1k.com rider list I see there's still mostly mid sized and smaller bikes registered, is everyone going for the challenges this year?
Still intending to go two up so it will be main route only for me this round and I believe SBM on his 650TA is doing the main loop too (not the Awakino at least) so who else is just cruising on the main route?

(As before it's Chch time zone but gathering in Fairlie)
77 riders on the list now.

    DAMN right!
The videos of the challenge loops make it a must! Thanks for helping to decide on what bike to wreck
I hopefully will be making it south and will know for sure in the New Year. By that time, I will have taken ALL the plastics off, bought new Knobblies, done a few oil changes and updated my first aid kit with EPIRB and AED
Tent, sleeping bag and few packets of OSM should last the distance. As for me? Hmm...

Hi TA (& others who may intend on giving the Challenge Sections a 'skip' this year - I don't plan on doing the Challenge Sections - getting too old (and believe it's unfair on those who help me pick up my bike n times) - thanks Rogson for the 5 times you helped me pick up my DR on the Awakino Saddle - cheers Aslan

bugger... bugger... bugger - new job!

    G'day
Got a new job confirmed today, great stuff I hear you say well in some ways it is in other ways it is a total bugger cos I have now confirmed a Jan 16 start with me away the DB1K weekend double or should that be

Anyway I was organised this year and have a single room at the Gladstone for Fri / Sun night and a single cabin in the Alex campground so if anyone wants their accomodation given to them on a plate drop me a PM

I will be going on a pre DB1k ride - thinking maybe a night or two camping up in the South Island somewhere prior to Jan 16 (so I can at least get a decent ride in) so if anyone is keen, again, drop me a PM

    One last final

The main route is a magic run, no doubt, but the challenge sections are sugar on the top for me, the Awakino is such a fun run with the most spectacular scenery, even though I've been through there 4 times now I can't wait to get back down there

I'll make a decision on the day. If conditions are good, ie been dry for a while, I'll give it a crack, otherwise I'll be doing the basic tour.
Sometimes you wish it was easier, but if it was, everyone else would do it, then you remember you don't want to be like everybody else!

Hi Tim (and others lurking) - I can easily be convinced to give the Awakino Saddle another 'crack' - like you I'll wait and see - meantime the sensible intention is to give it a skip - look forward to catching up - cheers Aslan

I'm supprised you guys are all thinking about skipping the Awakino Saddle challenge and yet haven't mentioned the 30 something river crossings on the way up to Omarama Saddle.

You will be pleased to know that I'm sending the main route over the "dry" (more easterly) Omarama Saddle this year and leaving the wet Saddle for the keen lads.

    Cheers R
