Paved Roads are just another example of Wasted Taxpayer Dollars
Thats pretty unlucky Mr Jatz, Im going to have to come down to check out the area now, so I guess I will make it in a couple of weeks with Eddieb. Hope you get well soon.
Midwives. [Helping people out]
Hope you get well soon buddy!
Was piglet riding your bike today?
In life as in dance Grace glides on blistered feet
Well.... I have a little spare time on my hands these days so thought I may update this thread with a brief RR from the other weekend![]()
Anyway... It had been a while since I'd been on a good ride, so hatched a plan to go for a pootle through Molesworth and then Lewis pass and down to Greymouth, then home via Westport. A pretty good ride round the block I thought
After an early start from home and fuel in Nelson it was still dark heading through the Whangamoa/Rai area
Still, it means less traffic on the fun bits
After a stunning sunrise over the vines just as I got to the Waiau river.
I sent MrsJ a txt to let her know where I was....more fuel in Blenheim(damn little DR tanks) and a cruisey ride over Taylors pass
I think I may have mentioned how much I like this time of day beforeAnyway...Over Taylors and the bike is going well, good tunes on the i-pod, it was a good day to be alive and I was feelin pretty good, even waved to the camera
A breif stop for a quick "been there, done that" pic

and I was back on the bike and away, past the Molesworth homestead and rangers hut and it was just getting better.
Isolated flat
Across the flat, over the saddle, around a few more corners and then.....
I wake up to some guy telling me I've fallen off me bike, a bit of pain and some rocks digging into my back, not tooo bad considering
Another family from Christchurch arrive on the scene and offer assistance, make a cuppa and and make me comfortable.Thats not their campervan, that was somebody else who stopped and offered assistance.
Absolutely awesome people who went out of their way to help. I'm a little hazy on the exact order of things here, but will make an educated guess, besides, I was there and you guys weren't
I think guy #1 went and got the ranger from Acheron accom house while Sue, Brook, Rory and I chilled out, enjoying the scenery (hope you don't mind I used your names guys) ignore the chopper in this pic and focus on the scenery, the pic is a little out of order, chronologically
The ranger showed up and I tried to get into his wagon for a ride to Hamner, that wasn't gunna happenso a ride out was called from Nelson.
Here they come now...
Was a good sound to hear
And see
After being half undressed( I managed to wriggle out of the jacket to save it from the same fate as the pants) I was given some stuff to "keep me comfy" and put on a plank of wood with a toilet bowl round my neck, then bundled into my ride.
Would've been a stunning ride out but I wasn't in a position to sight see. Anyway, I ended up spending a couple of days in Nelson hospital with a fractured hip and something wrong with my left shoulder and side, still hurts to cough and sneezing usually end up with a wee yelp
What caused the off I hear you ask... Well I think it was this
My riding had been smooth and controled, no OH SHIT moments, keeping the speed down in double digits, drinking water regularly, and generally being cruisey
More to follow..

While I've a bit of time for navel gazing and contemplation I've had some thoughts (scarey I know)
Although I was in contact with Mrs J to let her know where I was through out the day, txt from Blenheim at 7:45, she was expecting another from Hanmer before lunch,By the time she would've raised the alarm I would have been crashed for a few hours.
I should probly have signed in at the rangers hut on the way in, usually I don't, in to much of a hurry, and signed out at the other end. If I had gone over a bank and off the road things could have been a lot different. I shall change this.
Also, If it had happened on a more remote track, like St James/Maling pass or even the Porika it could have been a long time to get things sorted.I will probly end up getting a small epirb to carry in future, also good for the boat
I find the people you meet when out riding are generally pretty good, I met a nice family from Chch (supplied some of the pics) and hope to keep in contact with them, so that is a positive
The nurses at Nelson Hospital were absolutely out standing, nothing was to much trouble and they keep a good eye on the patients, also the D.O.C. rangers were tops, they made sure Mrs J was informed of progress and kept up to date.
K.B. is a good tool for networking and getting things done. An inmate here, LoC,from Blenheim, was looking at this thread when the penny droped,. and he realised it was me in the Molesworth, he was able to pick up my bike from Acheron and deliver it to my door in Motueka, he was working not far from Acheron at the time, cheers fullah, I owe you one. This wouldn't have happened had this thread been on another international forum, even though they have more relaxed rules regarding embedded images
Also... while crutches may be fun when you grab ya mates for a quick lap round the yard they aren't much fun to live with full time, I have a new respect for those who must have them for life, and "Honey... can you grab my crutch" is only funny once or twice
Despite the horror stories I've heard ACC have been very helpfull and proffesional, I even got some of my levy back alreadyand the insurance company have been tops too, covering the helmet and clothing with no hesitation.
that is all for now, almost nap time ...![]()

Have been following this for a while with a 'there but for the grace of [insert name of invisible deity of choice] go I' sense of dread/awe. Thanks for the report and wise reflection afterwards James; we can all learn from good days gone bad
Heal well - next time you plan a trip that includes Westport, PM and coffee is a certainty.

Wow that's scary. Pinch flat? The cuts look too close together for that. Any damage to the tyre? What caused the off I hear you ask... Well I think it was this
Yes I'm back online...... got beggar all else to do..
Will do Pete, and yes, maybe I needed a bit of prod in the right direction with regards to safety. Lesson learnt I say
You too wee fullah, I've just been re-reading Glenn Heggstad's book, 2 wheels through terror, man are you guys in for a treat
Possibly a pinch flat, although the holes are half way up the tube. I had 26psi in it though so it's unlikely (yes Nordie, I did check) Tyre is fine and the bike is now getting ridden to Nelson and back daily by the boy. A few scratches to hand gaurd/indicators and pannier rack is all
