the XR600 has a auto on the cam which can be a pain at times(hard to find TDC), upgraded cams like hotcams etc dont have them and without the auto on the 600 you NEED the manual decomp, The 650 seems a lot easier to kick over but then there a total different donkey

As old hands with trail bikes (early '70s) we all learnt a trick when we ran out of gas.
There was always a little bit of fuel left on the other side of the tank from the fuel tap.
We used to lay down the bike on the tap side, so any fuel trapped in the low part on the other side would flow over into the tap side of the tank.
Depending on the model of bike, we got up to 10Km of precious extra fuel, which was always enough to get to a supply.

The STANDARD tank on the XR650R is probably the WORST offender of trapped fuel that I have yet come across.
On the ''other side'' resides 1.5 litres of trapped fuel !
The normal reserve capacity measures 1.2 litres.
This is where the Average rider would ''run out''.
Unknown to him there is still even more ''reserve, reserve'' left at his disposal.

I realise the majority of you would know this already.....sweet, but many mature riders I have have spoken with in recent years, have not had this basic grounding.
If this information helps anyone at any time to extricate themselves from a situation it is worth the post.

    Thanks Guys....PIG on

I will be putting this post up on USA sites too, as our Pigs are always being slated for small fuel range.
I have never found any mention of this peculiarity on their sites.

    These are 1.5L bottles.
    Clear Bottle contains Reserve....1.2 L
    Green bottle contains LHS 'dregs'.......1'5L

I've only ever got mine about 500m with this method, needing reserve usually means needing to walk...

So what is different with your bike ?

Has the main fuel pipe on the tap (inside the tank) been cut down ?

yeah i'd say, still the fuel range is a bit of a joke, hence the 25litre safari monster

I have one of these 23ltr tanks on my XR, its great, lowers the bikes centre of gravity and I can get about 330km out of a tank. Never seen the rare tanks before, they look great, I really like that rally look, unfortunately they are well out of the budget

    Main Jet Change

In the interests of fuel mileage, I removed the fuel bowl and unscrewed the main jet, which was a 175.

Calif spec ran a 125, so I soldered up the 175 and stuck a 1.25mm drill bit through.

Started, ran and revved ok, in the shed .

Test ride today to verify running.

Incidentally, I got 100Km till I hit Reserve, on Sunday.
Am running the tank dry in two stages to check range.

    UPDATE;

Righto, 132KM.....tip bike over, then ran out again at 160.1KM total fuel range.
    Refilled tank 10.9L.

125 jet ran well up till one third throttle, then started gasping.
But ran ok at 110Kmh cruise.

Decided to raise the needle up 2 clicks for the heck of it. This should not help mid and top: it didn't !
In fact the bottom end was a bit worse.

The theory now is to return the needle to its No. 3 mid position and drill the main jet progressively bigger till it runs satisfactorily up top.

Then the needle will be lowered to run as lean as possible at one third throttle, or less, the range in which most 'ADV' riding occurs.

    That's the theory.......

JET DRILLS ARE KING DINO !

    FINAL Test;

    Put needle right Down.

Tried 135......then140......then 145 which ran very successfully.

    SO:

    MAIN JET....... 145

    NEEDLE.......... FULLY DOWN

    IDLE MIXTURE...... 2.5 TURNS OUT.

    We'll see how it goes.......
