The intersection we are talking about is what it is.
Anyone turning into it has a view of several hundred meters, due to the offset angle. That's what has led to complacency by folk turning into it.
If someone turns into it, cutting the corner, and causes a bin, it's their fault, regardless of their choice of vehicle.
It's crap engineering, but drivers are expected to comply with it.

It doesn't look very technical on Goggle. Sounds like laziness that should be policed.
.. and I was saying if that (policing) doesn't work stick a flippin median strip in the middle of the road that they can't drive over. People that cross centre lines in a lazy fashion annoy me more than most.
That corner, like many, will have had that kink put in it due to the number that caused problems by not looking properly when they approached the through road at an angle. Designers try to straighten them up to be more perpendicular to get a better view when they approach the intersection. Don't want them to miss seeing a biker coming along the through road and just pull out in front or worse hit them side on - "didn't see him orrificer".

No win for the road engineers. Bring the road at at the angle then you have an acute angle with drivers either having to look over their shoulders or if turning into the road swinging wide or having to almost stop on the straight through road.
The way it is now I can see why people turning right into the side road aim for the distance straight and I see Raustuscat's issue. I reckon I would be pissed if pinged for cutting the corner because it is a clear view, also I would have my right indicator on so I can change in to the right lane if its clear, right? If the lane isn't clear then it would be a fair cop.

It has been the policy of roading engineer's for some time now, to change Y intersections into T intersections. (This is a policy nationwide ... not just Christchurch) On the grounds that motorists do not arrive at the junction on an angle ... thus giving a better view of traffic approaching from either direction.
This intersection has been changed ... why do Canterbury drivers have a problem with it ... ???
When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
And regarding the engineering of that intersection it looks to me like the dogleg that causes Townsend Road to intersect at a right angle is specifically to cause drivers to make a deliberate and judged turn into Townsend Road instead of just suddenly veering across the oncoming lane.
Even where I live here in the great city of Porirua I live near a curve which has interesting things occur. The street isn't particularly narrow, just a typical suburban street. It has a centre-line painted on it.
About 9 out of 10 cars that come along the road taking the right hand curve make a squealing sound on a dry day which I hear clearly when I'm outside and sometimes when I'm inside. What is it? Well its the noise generated when they don't stay properly in their lane and drive around the corner right on top of the white centre line. What is it with people that can't stay in their lane? This is a smooth radius curve in a 50km/hr zone and nothing much is gained by cutting a slightly tight line except a greater risk of hitting someone going the other way because if the tyre is on the white line sure as hell much of the car is over it.

I know what you're on about Merv - are people today so limp-wristed that even with power steering they can't keep to their side of the road?
I'm on a section of road that has a slight left-hand curve leading onto a straight section for people entering town, in a 70kph area.
Yet at night I constantly hear 'babump...babump,,,babump' as people entering town run over the cat-eyes in the centre of the road...incompentent imbeciles...a slight left turn and they still can't keep to their side of the road! "Aw but there was nothing coming" WTF: Do they think the person causing a head-on thought "There IS something coming but what the helll." just before impact?
Big jagged spikes down the centre of the road would cure that problem overnight....
