Have the seller take it to a mech to get er checked out, and get it shipped. I did that with my 400. ChCh to Auckers and vice versa is the main shipping for both biketranz and motorcycle movers, and cost you around 300-350$ or so. Cambridge isn't so far away that it either wouldn't cost much more to get it to your door, or come to auckers to pick up.

If I had that kind of dosh to spend, I'd hang out for a 500. Theyre bloody economical, reliable as the earth turning, dont look too bad (if you can get over the gixxer wanna be look) and assuming you dont feel the need for massive hp/torque, last you well into your full.

At 80-90 k it has nothing left re power to get you out of trouble and the front suspension is what i'd call extremely sad !
That much is true, although 110kph is what I managed every day commuting on it... with little wind, properly inflated tyres, nose-to-handlebar,...

Of course... I'd agree that anything like the Scorpio or the Dealim would be unsuited to frequent motorway or open road travel. Possible of course but...

I agree...and if the price offered, is accepted, thats great buying right there!
I know said ealier about ''buying the right bike for you'' (which is 100% the thing to do) the GS would be a great starter as you said, for anyone.
Bar risers can always be fitted if the position is not to liking, but I can't see that being a problem.

Why is the speedo in miles?...current owner doesn't know that it can be changed with a push of a button....right?

Edit:...though I can't see how to, looking at the pics.

Just remember ... standing up your feet may reach the ground. On a big bike however ... they may not.

Please post a pic of your legs (Bare is ok) ....

    $470ish from ChCh to Cambridge.
Trying to stick to the 400 to 600 bracket, should give me enough power for the longer road trips but still stays under that horrible rego increase... Also means I won't have to upgrade any time soon

It's an overweight trail bike. As a tourable dirt bike they're good value, but it's not what you said you wanted.

That DR is elec start, so atleast it won't make you have a huge right leg.
The can drop screws out the neutral switches (behind the clutch), if going to a mech to make sure those screws are lock tite and lock wired, it'll cost a bit.
They also have manual adjustment on the balance shaft chains, annoying and if ignored, big mess.

As for the GS500 and EX500/GPZ/Ninja thing, they're both much of a muchness really, both very capable twins, both smooth and easy to ride, both forgiving and both reliable.
I doubt you could go wrong with either of them.
I'd happily tootle around on one, even if they make less than half the power of my Kwaka

Strictly speaking, there are plenty of 250s out there that will easily tour all over the place with heaps of power to spare. Honda Hornets, for example, have nearly as much BHP as as the GS500. One nutter on here gijoe has gone all over the north island on his. Had it for over 100k kms until somebody stole the thing.

Quite a few Kbers actually with 250 hornets over 100kms.

Honda vt 250 spadas also have some 40+ odd BHP and will easily go wherever you want and last 100k kms+

Don't feel the need to limit yourself to strictly 400-600s. Heaps of good shit out there.

The only new 250 I'd ever consider is this
    http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/moto...-522883061.htm
Why? It looks like pure sex and I could slam a fucking stupid motor in it.

The rest of the 250s are poo now that LAMS exists, far better bikes can be had for much less coin.
