Also, I don't have the factory tool kit. After taking a good look over the bike I've put together a small kit to carry. I've got what I think I need, but is there anything you fella's with more experience would recommend?
Hi Brendon Should be a standard 12v car plug, though I have heard some are wired round the wrong way so put something in you dont value much to try first.

My Issurance has road side assist so that I'm missing a couple of things wont matter much

Not been out on the old girl for a while, wasn't exactly an adventure ride but good fun anyway

Had forgotten how much grunt these things have and how good they are for getting birds

Funny they behave quite similarly (presuming your other references is to RMX), don't like low throttle and go like nuts if revved, Oh and wheelies as well
Pic's in case others wonder what we're on about

How have you KTM guys found the backup service re warranty claims and parts etc? Am considering the new 1190 but would like some of your feedback if poss.
Cycle world listed the seat height as a bad point but really liked pretty much everything else.

Its to early to say with the new KTMADV but the old one are hit and miss reliability wise.

I used Cycle spot for my $1000+ servicing work and they are good (you need a spare bike for a month or so though if its a difficult part you need)

But IMHO KTM ADV's are the most amazing bikes and worth all those risks, if you are a sporty type rider it will be your rocketship of choice and their Gravel road manner is beyond Impeccable, its a dirt bike on some sort of crazy steroids, having questioned guys who can ride and have owned and ridden the 950/990ADV as well, apparently the new one is as good if not better with the added safety of the electronic aids

    Minus's,
Expensive so you will ride it like a Nana till it gets a few years and scratches on it (most 1190 riders I've ridden with seem to ride slower and I'm guessing its for this reason)
Perhaps to grunty and wheelies to easy especially if you switch off rider aids
Not as comfortable as a pipe and slipper BMW
I can't afford one so why should anyone else have one

Why oh why do you mention crap like this! Quit the stereotyping....
It is getting rather tedious and childish!
if you really need to do a comparison, be objective not stupid with the old boring comments...

I have to honest, I ed when I saw this.

I'm pretty sure I will one day buy a BMW but think I have a few good years left in me yet before succumbing to the inevitable

Disclaimer, in no way was the a afore mentioned BMW comments meant to be offensive in any way but were purely to point out that BMW's are comfortable like slippers (can't think of an escape for the pipe bit yet but will chew on that for a while)

Thanks 10, I have been checking out videos etc and reviews.
I am looking at buying a new bike and am considering the KTM, the Triumph Tiger Sport, the new V Strom. Not much else in that genre really appeals for many reasons at this stage.
I currently have a V Strom so am looking for the next step along. Also just spent 3500km on a GTR Kawasaki, and did not find it my cup of tea. basically, for the type of riding my wife and I do, we need something comfortable two up that can handle a rough NZ rd at a good cruising speed.

I am also capable of doing most if not all of my maintenance, but a good warranty backup is great piece of mind!

    Front tyres

howdy. what knobbly front tyres do you guys recommend for the big ktms? currently running a TKC80 on the front which is good on the road and good in the gravel, but gets a little sketchy in the mud. I understand every tyre will be a compromise. Has anyone tried a Dunlop D606 on the front? I had them on my old XR650R and loved them on that.
Other options would be pirelli MT21, metzeler T63 or Karoo?

What have you fella's used and liked?

I've tried the MT21 (better on dirt, worse on road), and a T63 (pretty much the same as the TKC).
I went back to the TKC as being best all round (currently with a Karoo 3 on the back).

I used to run the mt21 on my 990 and found it really good. It also preformed well on the Tarmac though I never pushed it to hard when wet.

Sketchy in the Mud, that's sounds about right, I think Its a weight thing as much as anything else, Its the same size tire as a 100kg 250 dirt bike but with more than twice the weight, its going to push like a bulldozer by comparison, At least that's what I found running My KTM with a Big Block Kenda which seemed similar to TKC80 (TKC seems slightly harder and more rigid on the road as Oscar said probable best all-rounder if you spend a bit of time on the road)

Found a D606 worked quite good on the 180kg DRBIG with semi cautious inputs the other day in the at times slippery Tokoroa forest (more grip I'd say than the Kenda or TKC and good on the road) http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...post1130718913
Seems to be the More serious Adv riders tire of Choice judging from this ride (most guys had them)

I try to run as low a pressure as I can risk when in offroad mode, (on the Bigger bikes 20psi) some may go lower ? but am not wanting to risk rim damage or punctures

hey cheers for the responses. I figured the sketchiness in the mud was partly due to the weight. the TKC is great for road and gravel, but this time of year something with a little more bite would be nice. I think I'll try a D606 at some stage, like I said they worked well on my XR, but this is the first big adv bike I've ever had so its a bit of a guessing game for now.

Perhaps I should also try dropping air pressure a bit lower, I've been going to down to mid to late 20's (PSI). I just don't want to put (another) ding in the front rim.

has anyone tried the trelleborg army special? I think its called the t644?? I think that's what chris birch was using on his 1190? Linton at Dirt action services suggested I try one but I had already made the call on the TKC80.

mitus E02 rear, this will take you to hell and back, more for dirt and rocky mountains tracks over a 4-10 day ride, I run them around 16 psi, and balanced, never had a puncher, and iv had a few the block pattern is 17mm deep, good for around 3000ks may be more if ya not drifting, at around $180 its money well spent, Linton sells these
