The rebels that McCain is referring to (the ones he's suggesting America could supply with the means to shoot down Russian planes) are part of the Free Syrian Army - who are the ones trying to over throw Assad.
The FSA have also said if they were to get into power they could work with Al Nusra who are very closely linked to Al Qaeda - and have tentative links to ISIS.
So it's becoming increasingly clear that America are quite prepared to arm the rebels that should probably be one of their targets in their so-called 'War on Terror'.
What a sordid little affair America is creating.
