Commer did a sliding door van, my dad had one. 1500 motor same as Humber 80. Doors could be held open with straps around the handles. Me and a couple of mates used to take it to town on Friday night, whooping down the motorway at all of 50 (mph as it was then), doors open, no seat belts. Could be lethal if you forgot the door strap and hit the brakes.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

The CA Beddy was known as the Bread Van (we had everything delivered in the '50's and '60's, our mother's didn't have cars, so milk, bread, newspapers, coal, a fruit and veg truck, the grocer and butcher delivered). So in the morning the bread was delivered, the CA was left idling in 1st gear, and he left the doors open, jumping in and out delivering our bread.

I did a milk round in the late 70's / early 80's in a Mark 2 Transit with sliding doors. Chances of those being allowed now are zero, like the London buses you could jump off while they were still moving. I never had a problem doing the milk, but do recall my little brother jumping off a bus that was moving slightly faster than his little legs could propel him and seeing him bowl in to a crowd of people on the footpath. How we laughed.

My older brother had a 1600 Vitesse, then upgraded to the 2000 one. He loved it. Only sold it due to family outgrowing it. Moved up to a Peugeot 504 and has had Peugeots ever since.

When I was an apprentice I had to travel from Invercargill to Mataura, (about 50km), mostly in a CA Bedford. Noisy, slow, rolled all over the place. On the odd occasion I got to travel with another contractor that had a Leyland, formerly Atlas Major, and it was much faster, and more comfortable. Did the same trip in about half the time.

Once, dad the plumber would have been so proud to arrive at the family home after picking up his brand new Leyland 15 van. Kids would've been climbing all though it touching everything, a quick ride around the neighbour hood before tea. Dad telling mom how much stuff they would be able to pack into the van when Christmas holidays arrived.

A bit sad to think of yesterdays pride and joy being todays piece of shit.

Mate of mine had a Standard Vanguard, two tone green and white .

He replaced the original motor with a 308 Holden from a wrecked HQ ,but kept the the Town and Countries on the back.

Wish I'd taken a picture, used to go like shit with the knobblies on the back. Didn't handle too well though.

Great fun on a Friday night

Believe me, you wouldn't want the Mayflower...even as a playhouse for the boys.

The TR2 price i'd guess reflects the amount of pro restoration needed plus parts...Still overpriced IMO, even for a longdoor.

The Mayflower is a ''Coupe'' with a ''Flathead'' mill. Selling is all about key words these day. The Mayflower is a good example of making an ugly car even more ugly by reducing the size....of the Renown.

Pretty sure they're still the sidevalve motor. There's a hophead up at Whitecliffs i think still has one. I worked with a guy some years back who kept one going which was in pretty good nick - but only got around $500 when he sold it....That one is "optimistically priced"...
