As an American I feel compelled to say first that we know better than you that we have a bunch of problems, chronic problems, to deal with, but that we get a little tired of being told how ignorant and uncivilized we are by others with their own problems. The Economist, otherwise usually the best of the remaining news and opinion magazines, can hardly publish an issue without an article advising us of how retarded we are for retaining the death penalty. FWIW, many of us feel that our methods of execution are if anything too humane for someone who rapes and murders a child, and that any truly civilized country should have a death penalty as an instrument of ordinary societal hygiene in such cases.

But I've digressed from THIS weeks' America-bashing, over the supposed "executions by cop." The one in Minnesota looks like a tragic misunderstanding by the cop, who appears to have been too quick on the trigger. More information is needed. But in the cop's defense, since many have already decided that he was all too ready to blow away a black man, consider this. First, any cop very likely has a family for which he is the main or sole provider, and if it comes to a choice between his life and that of a suspect who appears to be drawing a deadly weapon, protecting HIS (the cop's) family's interest comes first. In THIS instance, as we have it so far, the cop saw someone who looked as if he might have been the perp in a felony, and decided to pull him over and have a talk with him. In calling in the stop, and radioing DMV with the license plate, the DMV reported back that Philandro Castile had no criminal record but had an astoundingly long list of driving violations including driving with a suspended license more than once, driving under the influence (while carrying a child), driving without insurance, and on and on. This would certainly indicate that the cop was going to be pulling over a guy who to say the least was something of a flake, a man with an attitude, not an ordinary motorist. And remember, the cop already thought he might be pulling over a person who had just commited a felony, a desperate man.

What exact moves were made by Castile as the cop tensely looked in the window, we do not know. As I say, for now it appears like the cop tragically misunderstood Castile's intent. But for someone who appears to have been a good guy in other parts of his life, Castile certainly had a long record of lousy judgement when he got into an automobile. It is not unreasonable to guess that he wasn't too smart about keeping both hands in sight, communicating clearly and making any moves slowly in front of a cop. Anyone with any brains knows to do this, to reassure a cop who can't know exactly what he is dealing with when he comes up to your door. Like Castile, I recently got stopped for a burned-out brake light (though in his case this was a pretext for the cop). I kept both hands in sight while explaining that I was going to reach, slowly, for my registration/insurance/I.D.. My guess was that Castile didn't do it this way. Damned shame. He didn't need to die. But I'm not ready to condemn the cop without knowing more.

Here in lil old *We don't believe in the death penalty* NZ, we've had a couple of rapist/murderers exonerated. With your system, be a bit hard to shake their hands on the way out I guess. What are your thoughts on that?

if the system was infallible, i would support the IRL banhammer. "Social hygiene" is a great phrase. Once someone has crossed over to, say, beating a child to death, stabbing a woman 50 times, molesting children, they IMO, void their right to life.
