Poll - How much more are you willing to pay?

do you buy tyres for your car or new carpet or grocerys or plants for the garden or tools or building supplies or shoes or computer gear on ebay??? what do you think the markup is on those items...and those of you who are self employed how much markup do you put on your materials....those of you who work in factorys etc producing stuff for sale who's going to buy it if they can get it elsewhere cheaper. It costs money to run a buisness, you need premises, stock, staff, insurance, acc levies, gst, provisional tax, terminal tax, employer subsidised kiwisaver (tax), accountancy fees, power, water, rates, and on and on it goes. That money doesnt fall out of the sky. Tony.OK saved $180 for a power commander that has no warranty, is fucked and doesnt work and he is complaining about the distributer not honoring the warranty, why should they?? they didnt supply it and the cost of things overseas may have something to do with the huge demand in places like the US compared to us in NZ on the backside of the world with a tiny motorcycling community.

I would shop around, check prices but prefer to buy local just in case it packs up, easier to deal with face to face

I like the "Idea" of supporting local dealers for bits and bobs. But if the price is hugely better to bring in myself then that I will. But if there is only a minor I would be fine with buying local paying a few extra quid. Ya do want to local guys to continue doing what they do, it keeps the country happy uh?

In the end for me it is about "Customer" service.
An example is I asked for a price for "bit"/"part" back in November from a local dealer... no repsonse after a number of face to face ask's.
Fed up in early Jan, I asked the Aussie dealer,........ super quick response, a deal was struck, great price, and very quick turn around to recieving the items in the post ex Italy.

And still I wait for the price from dealer one.
Would I have got a better deal here. Who knows?
And out of principle and outstanding service, I would not hesitate to deal as above.

Do people shop around for pricing in NZ? or goto their local dealer only, then ebay etc. As wholesalers seem to set RRP. So if a shop sells for more is that ripping us off or themselfs? I buy where it cheapest, but am I going to keep my local open for bussiness for tyres,filter,plugs etc. buy doing that?

Stealerships need me more than I need them.

I always shop around. Around NZ and online.

In saying that I dont begrudge a man earning a living and I'd pay 10-20% more to buy local, especially if it's NZ made.

The thing is almost every recent purchase has worked out hundreds of dollars cheaper when ordering over the net.

Delivery times have been similar too.

And in one case I was told by the local Suzuki Stealership, Nope we cant get the Engine Guards you want for your C50T you just have to settle for what we have in stock.

Well ring up another "No Sale" boys.

I got what I wanted from the US for less hassel than you gave me and cheaper than those shitty bars (which didn't fit properly by the way) that you tried to dump on me too.

You only got yourself to blame.

Im with Jimjim on this one. As the title says how much are you willing to pay?
Are you willing to loose you local or favorite or most supportive bike shop because its closed due to folks buying off shore? Where will you go to get the small things if that happened? The grips, tyres, all the small thing we buy. Who will then service or repair your bike?
I know it is cheaper up front to buy online off shore sometimes but like the power commander post, who you going to deal with if it all goes tits up.
Im in the flooring industry & it amazes me when people expect me to use my installers to install carpet they have purchased from online places. Sod off my guys lay flooring that we sell. They then expect me to tell them who & where they can find a layer. Why should I? WIFM?? Nothing!
Now put that into the motorcycle business. I have got a good friend that has got some real nice gear for his new bike from the States & in now having some small niggles with tuning/ecu mapping and expecting the local dealer to be able to sort it. Should they? Personally Im not so sure.
So how much more is he will to pay?

I will give you another example. I have a crappyish old cello that souded crap. I have real nice (exspencive) strings on my new cello so i wanted to get a set of the good ones for the old cello to see if it would help. The price from AK to get the strings 600 dollers for the set, to buy from a US on line place? 290 NZD with postage here. But then i need rosen or some other thing i buy it here.

As far as bike bits go i think about it like this. If i see a product in he bike store i like i will buy it formt he store. If i find it on line i will buy it on line. Or go into the dealer and ask them to get it in.

Will buy locally for the boring stuff but anything out of the ordinary its egay or my favourite website,seems that whether your choice of ride is the latest and greatest or an older thing like mine that you have an addiction to throwing money at then overseas is the place to buy trick bits at good prices,bullshit like clear clutch covers have been made for anything you want one for but every time i take my old pusser to a rally theres guys go nuts over it.Would rather live here than anywhere but as far as good stuff at good prices we are way behind,no matter what the latest importer of bling shit tells you.I rang a wrecker here for a 6 spring clutch out of a TLR,he quoted me $400 nz,i got one landed to my back door from Germany for a hundy + change US,The kiwi wrecker wanted bullshit money for freight on top, these guys must think we are right muppets.

Thats not what I said,

I got mine before they changed the warranty side of things.When I finally got round to getting it mapped it turned out it was faulty,the bike shop told me that it won't be covered now.I didn't even try to get it fixed after being told that.
I was pissed off,shit happens,so I brought another one locally so I would be covered.
Some things are worth the extra,some aren't.
My race exh system here is nearly 3 grand,I got mine for $1150 landed,so I should spend an extra 1500+ just because.

I do the same if I cant find it local Ill shop overseas, but in saying that I cant do engine work and can only rely on mates so much with the time frame I want my bike back in. NZ made nearly always will cost more which makes it hard to support.
Yes things are cheaper overseas as for your local shop not supplying correct bars at least you can go back to get correct bars.
I have had a good run shopping local thats why I would pay more but yeah It is the same old boring exspensive shit supplied here and that wont change in a hurry with so many prepared to shop off shore.

Have alot to be blamed for but not this one unless you are talking about someone else or I havnt read thread right. I dont think I had any lying around for my impulse that would fit your bike. I use my knee and sometimes elbow

Well , Im a mixture also, I will shop around and buy best deal, but thats not just money, its quality also, Ive just paid over a hundred NZ$ more for a bit of gear purchased from local zuki dealer, because they had it in stock, and I could look before I bought.. but as a general rule I find that I get better quality gear from the states, better quality chrome for example compared to NZ chrome so I wouldnt by chrome made here. But as a rule I shop worldwide and get excellant service.

its your choice, its your money you do what you want and over 100% markup isnt unusual have you bought bathroom fittings lately??
