What size rear wheel? I picked up anew 4.60x17 for the KLR from http://www.biketreadz.co.nz/ for $50. Unknown "Deestone" brand from Thailand, but its only got to last one day. Round, black and got nice big knobs,

it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

I love MT60's and have run them on both my motards but there just wasn't enough traction in the dirt when it got wet.
My brother however seemed not to notice the loss of traction and punted it wherever he wanted and I was struggling to keep up on my knobblie shod XR250.

I'm sure we can find and have ago at the Pram track by ourselves but it would be cool to go for a ride with the local yokels before the starts

Could be a starter. What do you mean by "Pram track'?

It is one of the tracks between Maungakotukutuku and Karapoti road in the Akatarawas'. Apparently survivable by adventure bikes (if Busa Jim is to be believed)!

Well new heavy duty tubes and sharp new E-09's on the dakar, all serviced and checked over....

    Spare tubes and tool kit....

    Pack rack and bag ordered....

One thing i asked for at the bike shop here was a few spare chain links after the Kawhia chain link - tyre issue... But they could not match it up, It's not 520 or 525... They had no idea... Nothing would fit that they had..!!

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?..........

I've done it a few times on the DR200. Wouldn't have wanted to heave a GSA through it, but it's certainly passable by a n00b on a little bike with trail tyres.

Excuse the crappy hand-plotted Google map:

We haven't organised times and departure locations yet but I suspect that mid afternoon i.e. somewhere around 2/2.30pm we will be leaving Upper Hutt without our gear (hope to dump it in Plimmerton first).

GS650 chain is meant to be a 520.

The only weird one is the DR650 with it's 525.

Man, am I generous, you mess up my motel room and there will be hell to pay (or at least a couple of beers).
I expect a full report on this track as I'm planning on doing it on the way north on sunday, so, if anyones needing to do it then, feel free to join in, I need people that can carry and push.....

On a completely different subject, I understand Plimmerton boatclub is the venue for friday night, is everyone going there or somewhere else? I'm quite excited to actually meet people I have invested a good part of a year insulting.

If it helps, the 5 series chains are 5/8ths of an inch pitch (16mm) and the 20 or 25 refers to the width of the roller, the 20 being 2/8ths wide (6.3mm) and the 25 being 2.5/8ths wide (8mm).
Measure and all will be revealed.
I've got a clapped out 520 chain with link lying around here somewhere I can bring with me if that helps.

    Interesting!

All the info i could find says 520 chain like NordieBoy says... There was mention on different pin sizes which could be the problem...

I will have to measure on friday as tomorrow is a rush trip to New Plymouth and back....

The old fulla speaks the truth.
Commonly referred to as the "law of eights".
Fatty the scrambler also runs a 525. Most of the wholesalers should be able to supply a split link.

Pub is over the road from the BP service station on the main street.

I'll keep my beers then Already have an offer of a motel room but if it falls though I'll get in touch. How about you supply the beer and I'll supply the ride report See you all at the yatch club.

Different manufacturers and different models of chain have different pin sizes and side plate thickness's. For a long term repair you really should have the correct joining link for the chain (see the side plates of the chain they should have the manufacture, model and size stamped on them). Failing that just get a link that works but treat it as a very temporary repair.

    You got it mate :thumb

The one on the south side of the main road through town.

My plan on reaching Plimmerton will be to set up camp & then mosey down to the boating club. There you can get registered and stick together the route sheet over a beer. Might get a feed there too. Don't forget your scissors & sellotape!

    Cheers
