I can confirm that Ixion is correct. The source is the guy in charge of Parking for Auckland City Council - Brian Tomlinson.
An article will be appearing in the next edition of Rush Hour Magazine to explain the details, but basically the rules are:
- You may park for free in an Auckland City parking building
- You may park in a Pay & Display space without paying, on condition you are considerate and follow all the other rules (eg stick to the time limit)
- You may not park on the footpath
- You may not park on yellow lines, bus stops, clearways, etc.
Mr Les Mason (President of BRONZ Auckland) was also interviewed for the article and he gave his opinion about the drawbacks of this system, including the lack of clarity about what constitutes a 'footpath'.
I was involved in a photo shoot to illustrate the article and the nice parking warden guided me exactly where and how to park my bike for the 'right' and 'wrong' illustrations.
Rush Hour Magazine is available free from a lot of bike shops (I just saw it at Cycle Treads the other day). The new edition is the May/June one, and should be out shortly.
