SV1000S .. I must be a soft cock

From discussions with other SV Riders it appears while brisk touring ,as long as you keep it below about 6000rpm which is still bloody quick on a SV, you can get damn good fuel consumption. Anything over the max torque range of about 7000rpm it appears to drink it
Interesting to see that none of the carburetted Firestorm boys can get near that mark of 49-50mpg, guess it must be something to do with the more modern fuel injection system the SV has, because at the end of the day both bikes weigh about the same and same size motors, both 6 speed V1000 twins

In any case who cares they are both great V-twins, and whats a few dollars in gas between freinds when you are having that much fun.

ZX14 306km to 20.5l of fuel, was 2 up in the deep south nana'ing it everywhere, thirsty bugger when you ride it normally..... wish I was getting better fuel economy.

yeah - last year from Haast to Hokitika travelling at about 110ks with my lard arse and a whole bunch of luggage, I used just over 13 litres for what from memory was about 280km.

Yeessssss....
I think it must be those 48mm carbies - they have a strong gravitational pull near the bellmouth, that sucks in lots of fuel, air, small animals and children.... It doesn't make for good fuel economy at all.
Here's an example: on other bikes, I used to be able to nurse the engine for anything up to a couple of kilometres once the fuel tank was nearly empty. On the Fahrtsturm, it stopped within seconds of the first splutter. At the gas station, it was obvious it had sucked every last poofteenth of fuel, as it took about 600ml more to fill the tank than the quoted volume. Apparently the lines and bowls were dry as a bone.
But at least (unlike the VFR750) it was easy to start once refilled. The VFR had this stupid fuel pump that didn't work unless the engine was running, and inhibited fuel flow from the tank to the carbs when it wasn't.

Yep, will definitely be injection on any VTR replacement! 54mm throttle bodies on the 05- SV1k, and much better mileage at cruise so I'm told. But, if you're giving it plenty, then they'll both drink unleaded like a whore skulls cheap red wine.

I agree. I'm lucky to get 200-220. You're not pushing the SV if you're getting that kind of mileage dude(s).......

im only getting 240km out of 17 ltrs on my bike, tho i treat every set of lights like a drag strip - first to the speed limit wins kind of thing. Im thinking the best id get out of the 21ltr tank would be about 300km and that would be taking it easy. Not quite the range i was hoping for in a sport tourer.

Yes - profligate fuel quaffing über-carbs indeed. Could hear the greedy beasts clamour for juice with every opening of the throttle.

Even when being as gentle as a kitten, I only managed 40mpg at best. But, oh, the gorgeous popping and symphony of demons changing down through the gears on the overrun made the extra fuel bill worth it.

Damn, I'm gona miss that 'storm.

Still more efficient than a single person in a fairly modest car though!

So what you're all saying is that I am only going to notice a slight difference when I step off my 250 single, at around 25km/L for the last 2+ years, and get me a SV1000 or even worse ( but better bike (?) ) TL? Don't worry, petrol is cheaper is Australia ( hopefully ).

very true..found this out when i power-wheelied in 2nd the other day..

SV's seem to go much farther on a tank (notwithstanding the tank size difference with TL's) anyway, must be some clever tuning. or you're not riding hard enough..
