    Accidents stats.

    1. Corners. Single & multi vehicle accidents combined. Usual format is following rider falls off. Other riders may fall off avoiding him. Lead rider wonders where everyone is at the cafe.
    2. Groups Rides. Multiple vehicle accidents.
    3. Intersections. At least 2 vehicles.

I've posted the stats from Statistics NZ before and I know there will be inaccuracies in data collection, further compounded by analysis assumptions, but the differences in numbers between each type of accident are significant.

Overall, the more motorcycles the rider was riding with the more likely they are to have an accident.

    Hey mate,

What sort of riding are you doing? open road or just around hamilton?

Reason i ask is that i am on my zxr250 as often as i can and i am out and about in town working on my handling. I am QUITE over-cautious but in a few weeks i will be doing hamilton to cambridge etc and working my way up to open road rides, will be especially good without that yellow L and that 70km/h limit on the open road.

Anyways, drop me a PM if you want to go for a fairly relaxed ride i am not into racing, I've only been on 2 wheels for 5 months!

It's not about finding the right bikes to ride with but the right people. Have been on rides containing 1000, 900, 750, 650cc bikes and me on an RG150. On public roads the limit is 100 anyway and 140 is walking pace. We run a system where you keep the guy behind in sight not at all times but often enough to know if something has gone horribly wrong, this leads to a bit of race ahead slow down but it's all part of the fun. If the folks you are riding with leave you feeling left out upgrade your riding buddies. We also try and keep the groups to a max of about 5 bikes and even that has a tendency to get unmanageable.

If you try and keep up and ride outside your limits you put yourself in danger.

Riding by yourself is fun but if you do need to ride with others there are loads of 250 riders, such as myself up in Auckland. I know it's a bit of a hike from where you are but a lot of Auckland 250 riders travel all over the upper North Island over weekends - I, for example quite regularly shoot down to Tauranga and back for the weekend.

Keep an eye on the rides and planned events forum on here - you're bound to find something you can get involved with involving other 250 riders.

Hope this is of some help to you.
Good post. There is always the (self imposed?) pressure to keep up and ride outside of your skill levels and / abilities. This causes accidents and grief to both yourself and others - plain and simple.

Yes I agree. I too prefer riding alone or with one other. After a very close call between myself on a 250 (on a learners licence) - and a 4x4 that could have been very messy - I nearly learnt the hard way in regards to refusing to bow to pressure to ride other peoples rides. Ride your own ride - within your own limits and as BiK3RChiK says, practice, practice and practise... and when you think you have practiced enough - practice some more.

Yep - agreed. Despite comments to the contrary - riding in a large group or riding with others OR riding outside your skill levels does not give you a big cock. It will give you a big head caused by brain swelling when you hit the ground. Fundamentally different.

    Enjoy your rides:-)

    excellent advice

The best advice i have had on a bike was from ward fischer here in hamilton about 10 years ago, i was totally inexperienced and trying to keep up with the other people around the tennis court, ended up slipping off the clutch and hitting the fence. No injury physically but my pride was broken for some time.

He told me that not matter what situation ride withing your limits and capability

Oh and he also told me i wasn't ready to ride on the road so he failed me on my learners.

I would suggest you stay off highway 1 and take the road out past the airport, past mystery creek and into the back of Cambridge. Then coming back use the backroads back Morrinsville way. Its a good ride and not so much traffic. I've done it a number of times while getting used to the bike. Post a time and place if you want to meet up to head that way!! Always like talking to people about their bikes etc and I ride for the pleasure not always the speed. Actually my wife (pillion) is the one who always wants to go faster.

    cheers and beers
