Sadly, the ratio is quite high.We often (like, every day) hear the whinges, just don't often get a compliment for catching the offenders in the first place.
Most people when caught will feel aggrieved, but applaud the catching of others?
The really pertinent ratio will be who agree/disagree with Katman's diatribes....
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    What a very subjective question.

Red light runners - hanging is too good for the bastards (been T boned twice since I came to NZ 4 years ago - both times at intersections and both times when my signal had turned green)

Speeding - all depends on conditions and environment:

a/ 10km over near a school - shoot the bastards.
b/ Open road on flat ground, excellent visibility all around, excellent road conditions, no side roads or driveways nearby..20km over ain't so bad.
c/ Twisty tight turny roads - no comment as I do not wish to incriminate myself on a public forum!

Ratuscat - are you coming down for Tour of Southland (cyclerace) duties this year?
In space, no one can smell your fart.

I cringe many a time when I'm near taxis in Wellington and the safest course of action where it is available is to pass them and get well ahead and out of their way. They dawdle along and change lanes willy-nilly without warning and don't impress me much at all.
    Cheers

Taxi drivers are the fucking pits. You should see their antics here in Auckland City.

I saw a taxi driver who ran a red and had a headlight out get stopped in the city last weekend by a unmarked black commonwhore with a cop who was dressed like he was CVIU, which seemed at odds with the vehicle. After he was done with the paperwork and the taxi left, my cousin who I was with, wandered over to talk the cop and asked if he was CVIU which it turned out he wasn't despite the cap. He said he just hated taxi drivers! I like the cut of his gib!

    Hammer the bastards.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!

you know..i've never griped about traffic cops. you guys are more often friendly and helpful, sometimes i wish there were more of you on the road to catch idiots trying to race me in their cages while i'm passing them legally in a passing lane. and it seems no-one friggin' indicates anymore, or pays any attention to anyone else on the road. good on you mate, i hate taxi drivers. and couriers. the majority of them are ignorant cunts who think they're more important than anyone else on the road. keep up the great work.

And good on you for doing that.

And yes, you do get a lot of people - myself definitely in this category - that regularly bag the actions of various cops around the place. But, in my case, I bag them for completely failing to do anything to address road safety, preferring instead to concentrate of revenue-raising activity.

Running red lights is almost always dangerous. And therefore deserves a ticket. Exceeding the posted speed limit, provided the speed is not in excess of that which is safe for the conditions, is rarely ever dangerous. But it would seem most cops, egged on by political pressure, prefer to concentrate on speed rather than doing anything to correct the abysmal standard of driving prevalent in NZ.

Indicators are there to use if you're not using your mobile, they are optional, you can go through lights at orange or pink, or red if you're in a hurry. Always leave home late so you can rush to be on time. The speed limit is a minimum, if you're not doing it get the hell out of my way. That's all you need to know to drive on the roads. If I was big and brave I'd carry a hammer and break the indicators of non users, well, they don't need them.

[QUOTE=Ixion;1689754]I trust you pointed out to him that running an orange light is also an offence. And the penalty's the same. QUOTE]

Orange light means slow & prepare to stop. If you are too close to do that then you can go through !!
How do you get that 'running' an orange is an offence & carries the same penalty ?

How come taxi drivers can get away with not wearing a seat belt. As far as I know they are supposed to follow the same rules everyone else does

Good on you, I was hit at the lights quite a few years ago.
I have also been hit by a drunk taxi driver who was on duty. I have no remorse in anyone getting done for their stupid actions.
    Welcome to the site too.
If you are behind meDont ask as I am lost too.

Find the Road User Rule 2004, about Section 7.4 or 7.5

It deals with seatbelts and exemptions. Taxi drivers have an exemption while plying for hire.

Hey, this was not a diatribe about taxi drivers, this was a grizzle about people who have an inflated view of themselves, who regard everyone else as the problem.

Looking like no Tour of Southland for me, it hasn't been mentioned yet. I'm guessing that if it was happening, I'd know by now.

Is there still a speed limit on this exemption and what other groups does it cover eg postmen / couriers?
