Waitangi Weekend is better suited for me too
Sometimes you wish it was easier, but if it was, everyone else would do it, then you remember you don't want to be like everybody else!

Quite keen to have a crack at this db malarky, probably the 2 dayer, but too early to commit to dates yet, have family coming from the old country on 02 Jan, so not ideal timing.

I'll be a starter for either one or two dayer, depending on dates. Early Jan could have issues with traffic volumes on Molesworth/Rainbow due holiday period, could slow things down a bit for the one dayers. Also, the Molesworth road often closes in Jan due fire risk....do we have an alternative route option if this happens?

I figure we'd only need to fill up once for the the trip, plus maybe a little sip just to make sure

Hmm how close would I get with an 86 Tenere and a 30 yr old rider? Don't think I'm fit enough to tackle the 1 day as of yet anyways

I've got four guys so far saying yes they are starters for the 2-dayer, preferring later in Jan or sometime in Feb. Still checking with the other two guys.

How are people placed for the long weekends?

Wellington Anniversary (lower half of north isl) Sat 20th-Mon 22nd Jan
Waitangi weekend Fri 6th-Sun 8th Feb

Looks like there might be quite a bunch of you on the 2-dayer
Some days you are the bug , some days you are the windshield

    Arrow More info

Wow fair bit of interest in the DB this year - I make it about 25 2 day riders and 5 or so 1 day riders so far. Given the current numbers for the 2 day run there may have to be a couple of accommodation options. There are a couple of the Nelsonians that are looking into options for us - I'll get back to you when I know more.

The date is most important for the 1 day guys in that they need as much light as possible. At the moment there is a 50% preference for a run on the 3/4th Jan so we have a clear winner for the preferred date so far. There has been talk of a Waitangi weekend running. As there is always a risk that the Molesworth will close early and as things dry out as summer progresses leaving the run till later increases the chance that the Molesworth will not be open.

CrazyFrog asked about a Plan B if the Molesworth doesn't open. Firstly the Molesworth opens on the 28th December if the conditions are right. It is more likely for it to open then and close early than the other way around. In saying this if it doesn't open there is a Plan B route, however, it unfortunately involves a heap of seal and running the Rainbow both ways.

With respect to other vehicles in the Molesworth - they weren't a real problem for the last couple of runs. Last year we came across one group of vehicles heading south just north of the Molesworth homestead and another group of vehicles heading north about 1/2 way though the Molesworth. With a bit of courtesy from bikes and vehicles they are pretty quickly passed.

No prizes to give out yet. If somebody wants to donate a couple feel free

If Jatz and Arrowrider bring a couple of DR750's, Peril and Mrs Jatz a couple of XT600Z's, myself and ma bro a couple of XTZ750's, Warewolf and Crazyfrog a couple of KTM 640 A's all we need is a couple of KTM 950/990's (Jezza might join us on his 950 S), and a second XRV650/750's (will you be on the XRV650 underground?). A photo of all these bikes lined up would be pretty cool!!!! Sorry all those others on "boring" non dakar bikes

    Cheers R

    What he said.

We only got held up by one convoy last year, or more accurately one vehicle in the convoy. For ten-fifteen minutes you question whether you are being impatient, then you get the subsequent vehicles ease over and wave you past at their earliest opportunity...

Long, long range prediction for spring & summer from metservice is average rainfall and marginally higher than average temperatures for most areas. That suggests a "normal" season for Molesworth.

Nelson anniversary will be Mon 2nd Feb? and Waitangi Day Fri 6th Feb... short week that!
    Cheers,
    Colin

I might be a starter for the 2 day, it sounds all a bit too good to miss.

Regional holidays are not much good to those that are not from the region. There is enough geographic spread of people that there isn't much point in worrying about them.
