As in the tube that has the needle jet at the top, and the main jet screwed into the bottom. Holes in the sides to help atomise the fuel, creating an emulsion of fuel & air.

aka "Throttle Valve Guide", the plastic bit that holds the piston (aka Throttle Valve) in place against the carb body.

Pressure pulses shake the piston back and forth in the carb throat. Since the Jet Needle is held in the piston, and the Needle Jet is fixed in the carb body, eventually the needle ovalises the jet orifice, causing a hopelessly rich mixture that can't be tuned out by faffing with the other jets.

In the case of my Triumph, at 155,000km there was 1.5mm of wear in the piston guides, which meant it took <5,000km to destroy a new $140 set of emulsion tubes and send the fuel consumption skyrocketing by 50%.

Another problem is that the needle can wear at the (nearly-closed) contact point with the jet, and in a worst-case scenario can break off and be ingested by the cylinder.
    Cheers,
    Colin

I've had some rocks hit them but I had rocks hit the originals.

The only reason to pull them off would be if I made some new ones that did the same but didn't drop below the frame rails.

Finally got around to removing the side stand kill switch this morning.
The bike feels much lighter now.

To celebrate I went out and got my first flat tyre since 2004...

    My first tyre change...

Up town on the mtb and buy a couple of tyre levers...

    And we're off!

    9 mins later...

20 min later it's all back together...
    With 3 big pinch holes

    1:25 hr later...
After a cycle to CycleTreads and back with the wheel under my arm...

    Checking the rear and...
How the hell did this happen?

    Hey I'm not complaining mind.
If I get a nail in a tyre that's exactly how I'd like it to be

Sometimes you wish it was easier, but if it was, everyone else would do it, then you remember you don't want to be like everybody else!

Yeah I thought I was the tyre changing legend till I installed a standard tube instead of my usual heavy duty ones...pinch holes all through it... Heavy duty tubes are a piece of piss though and put up with my lack of grace...

Personaly. I try to use just the very very tip of the lever when putin the tyre back on, discovered this after completly munting a tube first time round, also use hevy duty tubes.
The MT21 I put on the front I can just about get all the way on by hand, it''s those pesky Czech tyres I struggle with.
