    Kahurangi Point (Anatori and beyond...)

Headed off up to Anatori and Anaweka River yesterday, tried to make it to Kahurangi Point lighthouse but foiled by deep river crossing at Big River….now why do they call it that???
The river seems to be fordable on foot, but due to sandy entry and 3-5ft deep, it was a no-goer on the bike. Had a great blast along the beach anyway, but easy to lose perspective of speed and terrain on the sand, ya gotta watch those water channels at speed.
Great fun playing in the dunes as well, easy as on the firmer ones but as soon as the sand gets too soft, ya gotta sit way back, try and keep the front light and steer by leaning. Keep the throttle tapped and hang on. Buried the bike a few times after slowing too much, now I know how those Dakar guys feel. Once again, easy to lose perspective of the sand undulations on a sunny day, so bright and the glare does nothing for picking good lines thru the dunes.
Stopped at the Mangarakau Cafe on the way home, highly recommend them, good coffee and eats. Thanks for the tip there Topo. They say hi to you as well Fran....glad you're mobile again.
Bloody good fun in all, I was totally rooted last night though, 450km return, on a 30deg plus day. Too hot for this boy……I had to jump in the Mot river on the way home.
My photos are average but you get the idea, I was having too much fun playing on the bike to worry about photo composure……

Yep, no worries until you get onto the soft sand, up from the high tide line. Stay off the dunes and you'll be sweet. Venture into them only if you like diggin or are a brave man with the throttle, hurtling a 200kg beastie at full noise into the unknown.
I couldn't get over how f...ked up my depth perception was, I totally missed a couple of drop offs and could easily have endo'd the bike....instead I just buried it when I buttoned off. Maybe it was the white sand and bright sunlight, could be better on a cloudy day.
I erred on the side of caution being out there by myself....what a nana.

The Dakar guys/girls do the same.
Some of those youtube vids you have to think they didn't know that dropoff was there when they got 30m of air.

Apart from Carlos Sainz's dropoff of course - 6m vertically

may have to check out accom at Reefton. Last time I did the buller we had to stay in Murch as that was the closest accom we could get to Westport - Reefton was full Unless you're taking a tent...

We're staying in an unfinished house with no shower etc & we're chocka bloc so can't help out sorry.

The thought of riding that good stuff is getting me working thru these hot hot days.

Tenting it is then I suppose, or under the bridge as you leave town.
Are you staying in Reefton Padmei or in Westport.

We're staying in Westport at parents of friends but unfortunately have a full house & there is no lawn - just gravel making up the rest of the subdivided section

The campground at westport is pretty good if you want to tent. If you want to stay at Reefton I can cruise thru early Sat morning

Not too early, I'm not good with mornings.
We'll stay at Reefton, prolly down by the river
Enjoy your ride from Inangahua landing to Reefton take your i-pod
